No, it fucking wasn't. And I watch a LOT of movies. A LOT. Especially crappy movies. And it was definitely in the nonsense bullshit category. Black Hawk Down was a good military movie. The Hurt Locker was ruined by DUMB fucking plot line twists. And I mean REALLY REALLY FUCKING DUMB.

Men Who Stare At Goats was more accurate portrayal of military life than Hurt Locker.

I'm not military and even I saw the movie as complete bullshit. And I wanted to like it. Just too many little bs things added up to ruin it for me. Hey I'm a bomb tech and I'm gonna walk up and cowboy the shit out of every bomb I come across, not to save some children, but to just act like a badass. Quick, let's go outside our operating zone and SPLIT UP!

That and the fact that the Nesquik cereal he is looking at near the end of the movie is not distributed in the US anymore. That was the most significant portion of the movie for me.

Sounds like you aren't thinking in terms of State and Local law vs Federal law. State law requires a business license (or 'tax') to conduct business, if you are making money doing something as a 'business' and are not employed by someone who already has a business tax paid, you are running a business and have to pay this tax. Its annoying but its the standard across the country.

Its up to developers to move to Linux, it will happen regularly as the big players get massive and small time guys can't afford to pay for patent licensing to develop a game that HAS to use proprietary technologies as a result of the host OS, we just haven't quite hit that point.

FACT: you own your land, but are subject to zoning requirements for safety purposes, and are subject to taxes based on the asshole politicians you elect locally to fleece you in the name of schools/roads/water reclamation funds that get shifted around behind the scenes. (Privatizing school lunches? More expensive services for more money? Where do you think that money for the new trend in privatization of all sorts of public services comes from...)

Land ownership requires responsibility and competency beyond the bare minimum. You own it until the local government wants to build a highway or an 'economic development' strip mall through your yard and the government is forced to pay you a "fair" rate. Involvement in your local government can help you fight and prevent shit like that. It takes effort, even in the age of ubiquitous internet instant gratification, to make things happen in the slow world of your local bureaucracy.

I won't disagree that shit has gotten out of hand with excessive taxes and fees for permits, but there is an underlying purpose/justification for the existence of such things in the first place.
