The very core of your argument is based on entitlement... "I want to try and become like this" presupposed that you "want what they have".

The American dream has been hijacked by corporate media and bred into the younger generations that its about getting RICH, either through hardwork and determination or luck. Whereas, the American dream, nay, the Universal dream, is simply to achieve happiness and sustenance without excessive strife.

In this case, maybe Web developers should be forced to learn about REAL server security and stop blaming the fucking IT departments when we respond with a resounding "no" to their requests that contain little or no concern for their shit quality code (RAILS? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?) they want to put on the front of a site for a fortune 500 company where any hack = negative pr = negative revenues as calculated by point hairs = blame the fucking IT department. At least when you are forced to implement it inside(the horrible, nightmare of a shitfest) Sharepoint, us guys in IT can fall back a little tiny bit on blaming MS for shoddy work and the newness of their product when the CEO and CIO come downstairs to tear off OUR heads. IT is on the line for server security and WE get reamed when a web dev team's work goes south.

Its frankly laughable that you suggest the IT group shouldn't be running exterior services and suggest an external web group should work 'with them', web dev should be under the oversight of IT managers.

I see where you are coming from, however...

You are doing government work, onsite at government facilities, specifically for government purposes, in place of a 'government employee', whether you are contracted or not, and on the face of it you should be held to the same requirements of a 'full' government employee in terms of employment, background checks, access to classified information, and your employment rights in general. Your salary is paid ultimately by taxpayer money, not to mention the profits earned by your private employer.

Something is wrong with the whole privatization of so much of the governments services, and I guarantee your company is doing the work because its PROFITABLE, essentially profiting using taxes paid by other peoples gross income earnings meant for the government to provide a specific service. Anyone else see what I'm getting at or is there too much cognitive dissonance involved since this is 'just how things work' now?

I can understand if your case is a VERY narrow service that would require millions upon millions of additional dollars to hire/train/manage a government (employee-only) program without private corporate welfare involved, but my argument is meant in a general sense.
