I look forward to the beginning of autopilotmobiles. However, I'll be one of the last to participate.
I picture the entertainment value of the work commute increasing exponentially. For example, if I need to take a lane I'll look for the autopilotmobiles and just cut in front, knowing that it will see the impending doom and hammer on the brakes.
If they make dedicated lanes then there best be a barrier between them and us regulars, it's impossible to keep the single drivers out of the existing HOV lanes.
"....While I'm on the subject, I've never met a Canadian or Britain who would trade their health care for ours...."
Canadian system (which is really a bunch of individual provincial systems with some oversight) has caused my family plenty of pain/grief. Speaking strictly of OHIP and AHC, never dealt with other provinces.
The issues with the American system typically revolve around cost to the individual while the Canadian systems have more to do with quality and timeliness of care.
As it stands right now, I'd take quality over cost. So, if responding to a/. post qualifies as "meeting someone" then you can never say the above again. If not, then continue your misinformed FUD.
The internet is a source of as much mis-information as it is information. In that you are censored with every click. What is truly horrifying is that some think this is horrifying. Back away from the tech for a few weeks.
While I would most definitely have to find a new profession, I view a world without the internet as refreshing and may go so far as to call it the beginnings of a utopia.
While the theory of preventative care is great for marketing and selling the privacy intrusion to legislators, it has a negative impact on the bottom line. Ultimately the data is far more valuable to an insurance company than a healthcare provider.
Don't expect a call from your doctor, only an insurance rate increase notice in the mail.
To the point others have already made. Considering the last 20 years, violent crime is on the decline while gun ownership is on the rise. No one is saying that the two are related but more importantly, they are not likely related. Therefore, more gun laws and controls would be "barking up the wrong tree".
But you can bet that if we enact new gun laws the already declining violent crime rate will be used as justification after the fact.
Considering the lifespan of typical vaccinations, there are likely far more "unvaccinated" than vaccinated in the western world. Probably just a given on the rest of the planet.
Started using Whatsapp a few years ago and after 6 months I realized that group threads completely replaced Facebook for me, so I deleted my fb account. Main reason for using it over standard SMS is that it allows me to emulate SMS internationally (important for many) for free. SMS is $0.50/msg!!!
However, my group (mostly family) recently made the switch to Telegram instead. Opensource version of the same thing.
Beg to differ. No matter the IT position, no 4-year degree = no employment as far as my employer is concerned. They don't seem to be concerned with the area you majored in but only that you have a CSci degree.
When I started here I already had 18 years experience, 15 of which were technical and every day of those were critical to having a successful interview but without the degree and the appropriate documentation to prove it, I would not have even made it to the interview process.
Right or wrong more employers are heading in this direction.
Besides the drive from Toronto to Halifax being that much quicker, you can reign over something like facebook.que instead and leave.ca to real Canadians.
Similar here, Started using it because my immediate family is international, but now:
- One group for myself and my kids and their spouses (International). Completely replaced my only need for Facebook, deleted > 1 yr ago.
- One group for a few friends
- Became my defacto IM platform because of the above.
As a current Verizon customer, I say the same thing. According to their map I am in a 3G full coverage area yet I have spotty or no services at all for miles around. When my contract expires in December, I'm out.
Probably because guys like me will still be driving my already 40+ year old vehicles. Of course that could be overcome with RFID or GPS base license plates.
Like Canada's cross country express, the cost of maintenance is going to drive the price of tickets, unless of course our tax dollars used to build it will also be used to keep it operating. That would likely make it a very expensive way to travel also. I can usually fly from Atlanta to Chicago for under $200 return. Considering it would make a probable 6-8 hour one way trip into 2.5 I'm not likely to chose rail. Granted those are not likely begin/end points for rail but the point is that the cost of air travel vs time to travel is pretty hard to compete with.
I'll Second that. 18 years in IT and I view the cellphone as a leash of no value to me personally. Broadband at work has value, but at home it is a distraction. My company pays the bill for both but I still just have a slow speed service at home, it is adequate.
I've had broadband for years before mid 2008. The only think that amazed me was how liberating it was to be without it. Life improved, i just bought 10 acres in the country. I started to do a little farming, take more hikes, cut wood. It's all a huge stress relief from a long week at the office.
So contrary to most posts on this story.....Don't buck it til you've tried it. Put down the keyboard/mouse/plastic guitar/cellphone/remote/whatever and go outside. Heck, start spending a day or two a month pickuping all the freakin garbage us Americans love to leave all over the place and see how you feel. You will be suprised....and a little more fit.

But it was never Canadian.

Replace GUN with CAR in the above rant and it still works. (If you compare annual automobile deaths vs gun deaths, CAR is far more concerning).

One a 3-year old can use?
Funny, we left Verizon for AT&T recently and the vastly improved coverage will keep us there.
So your saying the FCC dosen't censor television? huh.....guess I learned something today.

Drinkin the koolaid!!!!
The higher death rates are from two things - guns and a lack of a comprehensive health-care system.
Dude. A little to much time on the Huffington Post.
The only health care program that really works is the single payer option.
Really!!!!! Where? how? Canada? UK? NOT!
Probably because guys like me will still be driving my already 40+ year old vehicles. Of course that could be overcome with RFID or GPS base license plates.
Really? You don't expect those taxes payments to come out of your wallet? huh.
