    I'm glad someone is paying attention to NNTP. All that's out there now (clientwise), besides Outlook Express, is crap. Now if they put together Outlook express with their free hosted service, yes it would monopolize, but a kick-ass new resource will be available for more than flames and porn.

    The sad fact is "Quick and Dirty" wins the race while "Done Right" goes out of business (or has a fraction of the total market. Microsoft is "Quick and Dirty" Apple is "Done Right" (basically). For homework, compare the two companies.

    By and large, most programmers are total idiots, especially government contractors. When you're hiring for government jobs , you're not getting Microsoft/Apple/Adobe quality engineers applying, you're getting DeVry grads. If programming was so easy it would be unionized and low-paid. There just aren't enough good programmers running around and lots of layed off can't find a job crappy ones

    What I'm worried about is that Apple will do the same thing it did when Windows 95 came out, and when the IBM PC came out which was mock them as inferior while doing nothing to improve their own products to stay a decade ahead of everyone else.

    That was a different case, the "speech" in question there was speech encouraging an illegal action. The Supreme Court in that case did stretch a bit in applying the speach to the litmus test but it is still within the realm of reasonability.

    In this case two people are exposing a weakness in a public system. That is exactly what the First Amendment is for.

    Someone, for whom this directly effects needs to stand up and fight these things rather then back out and whine about it! We need a court case to make it to the Supreme court to overturn this idiotic law. Its in clear violation of the First Amendment and even the current Conserative Court can't ignore that. I'm sure who ever takes it that far will be backed by EFF and or ACLU. Someone please take a stand. If this effected me directly I'll be right there.

    I'm not too sure that Arabs, Persians, Kurds and Turkmens would like lots of western carpet baggers running around making barrels of money and taking it all out of thier country. That is what a bunch of geeks going to Iraq would basically be. There's pleantly of locals in the area that attended western schools that can do the job.

    Ellison has and had lots of these "predictions". Only one of them was correct and that was that Relational Databases are going to be the next big thing. Every one after that was flat out wrong. Are you in front of a Network Computer right now? Are you running all of your software off of some central server?

    Larry hates Microsoft and Bill Gates in particular and loves to break out the FUD on Microsoft whenever he can.

    Propel et al are all just snake oil vendors who want your marketing data. All they run is a glorified proxy server that adds some compression (before the modem compresses the data anyway). At times their compression is counter productive and will slow things down. There's also a web cache thing on the client (which really isn't much better then the built in web cache.

    What is evil is all of their customers and customer's customer's traffic is run though their servers. Just wait unti a customer stubles upon a golf site by accident and is soon deluged by golf related offers in their e-mail and on the phone. Of course Propel et al will utterly deny that the usage data is ever shared or mined.

    This is going to come back and bite Earthlink.

    Oh yeah, 5:1 is utter bullshit.

    Sure you can come up with some computational program in Python etc. in a few hours as opposed to 2 weeks with C++/Java. Is that Pyton app going to be as easy to use for Joe Smith in shipping with a GED? Or will he have to go to night classes to learn how to use a command line with a config file?

    Its illegal to do the teamster's job of taking away trash. If too many people trash-pick, then there won't be enough jobs for the teamsters. Gotta love those unions.
