and what happens when this $800 billion dollar project fails to get a satelite up? I'll take my chances on the $400 million... thanks... I don't know why you think flying around and working space is easy.. Real life isn't star trek. It's not easy or safe to mine materials on earth, let alone on a rock sailing along at 12,000 meters per second reletive to us.
$424 million wasn't lost. The only thing lost was a satelite. The money got spent building the rocket and satelite. People got paid, now they get paid again. Cry all you want about the tax payer, but the sad reality is, they would have taken your money anyways.
Atleast this way its slightly distributed, and the aerospace community learns something. Consider how much fuel is spent, per day, fighting two wars. How much it costs to build a fence acrosss the border (which is the same security they use to keep preteens from sneaking in to the county fair). How much it costs to keep travellers from taking a bottle of water on a plane.
Clearly they need you to tell them how its done. Sure, in your perfect world every system is redundant, the redundant bits have backups, the backups have an auxillary system and the auxillary system has a dwarf with his finger on the button. The real world can't do this, because some Republican who hates smart people moans about costs being too high.
As the author of a Crime Book, I fear I will lose sales as now people will associate my work with Facebook.... Infact, I will sue anyone using the work book
everything they deserve? I'm guessing it works out to 5 months in jail, a year probation and maybe a six month wait before they crack open their offshore accounts with millions... the only people punished here are the victims and their insurance companies.... but it sends a message to other thieves.... "don't get caught"
its called market branding, and its way older than facebook... We don't search, we google.. we don't blow our noses in generic tissue, we reach for a Kleenex... Our good are delivered on MACK trucks, we dont listen to mp3 players, we listen to iPods. We don't copy things we Xerox them. We don't use correction fluid, we use White-out. We don't use small self adhesive bandages, we use BAND-AIDS. Sometimes it good for the brand, sometimes it isn't.. In the case of White-OUT, it hurts, because all the user wants is white paint to cover up a boo-boo, it doesnt matter to them what the name sais, same with Kleenex.. It works great for brands that didn't invent their respective markets, which is why it works so well for Facebook.. Anyone unfamiliar with the internet post-reply forums, will instantly make a connection to Facebook when you explain the premise... They see Facebook, their cousins and children use it, so it becomes the phrase they use to explain it to others... It's also interesting how it works the opposite way too... eBay is the garage sale of the internet, no one says "my garage sale is the eBay of my neighbourhood"...
I have always bought the motherboard, chip and ram first.... like most tinkerers ive got a metric butt-load of cases lying around... The case is usually and aftterthough for me, and I don't care what my various computers look like... It wasnt until I decided to put together an HTPC that I put any thought in to an attractive or functional case....
The kindling point of carboard is significantly higher than that. They Ray Bradbury Novel would have you believe its at Farenheit 451 (over 800 Farenheit), however this isnt really true.. Your average sheet of untreated, dry paper is around 450 Celcius, but packaging is treated to make it flame retardant and water repellant.. This makes it difficult to burn. Try taking your average motherboard box and try to start it on fire with a match... Chances are the match will burn your fingers before the box actually ignites... Once it does ignite, it will peter out fairly quickly.. It won't burst in to flames like piece of tissue. More than likely it will just just singe a bit, and thats all..
Wouldn't it make more sense to use a non-gmail account as your backup? I do exactly what you say, only with my crappy free POP account my ISP gives me.
I am the only one know knows someone with a severe disability, whos only real connection is with the full world is through his compute?. Before his condition deteriorated to the point where he cannot walk and use his hands very well, he was a technician.. He interfaces with the computer through voice, he tells it what applications to open, he dictates email and documents. He uses voice to organize pictures, interact with facebook, all the stuff any average computer use would do. It's actually quite neat how the software adapts to his voice and learns from its mistakes. It even recognizes my voice when I speak to it, and changes profiles for me. So I would say, talking to computers is more common than you think.
In 1985 a 10 meg harddrive for the commodore 64 cost $600.... 60 dollars a meg!! You could buy 1600+ floppies for that.. and use both sides of them... No wonder harddrives never caught on..
shitload is a measurment of volume... shit-ton is a measurment of weight and... for size, its various turds of different species.. I beleive this drive is about the size of a stepped on raccoon turd.
who woulda thought the SUPERBOWL would sell out? I remember the days when you would watch the Superbowl to see the fine showcase of indie/underground talent.. Now its so commercial...
one big heap would be better than 100+k little heaps that are drifting in orbit, uncontrolled, withouth thrusters, as a result of a few brilliant ideas.
So annoying! The last consumer-ready PC i bought was for my wife a few years ago.. I bought it from a big box store, it was brand name (rhymes with HP). It was a rather impulsive buy, and the only reason I bought it was becuase I thought it would be quicker to set up, expecting that she would be able to turn it on, and use it that night. It was so loaded with crap, which I expected, but the most amazing part was the free-trial antivirus (rhymes with Norton) came up identifying the computer as infected, and listed one of the other bloatware trials. I couldn't believe it... Rather than deal with it I just reloaded the system.. It was the first, and last time I will buy a consumer-ready. Even for someone not skilled with computers, its so easy to buy a PC for less than the price of something from a big box store. Pre-assembled, and a copy of windows... windows 7 installs so easy, my grandfather actually did it himself, and thats not an cliche (gramma ready PC), he actually did.

There are two types of people who keep backups. Those that have lost everything, and those that have not.
so everyones computer should be designed with your legacy equipment in mind?

just to let you know, i read that comment to the tune of "Drift Away"... and smiled
Exactly. It might take time, but its gotta happen... This wont push XP users to upgrade en masse, but it will show the writing on the wall.
Yah, musicians don't get any chicks.. I remember in highschool I couldn't get any tail until I gave up guitar and bought a graphing calculator

We're gonna need a bigger boat

lets call them serial whores... mmm.... cereal whores
criminals on the lose = risk... The sooner they respond the better chance they have of identifying suspects.
