Don't think for a second the food is "free" : Google is retaining their staff on premise - less chance of someone eavesdropping on a call / conversation or shoulder surfing a laptop. Staff members continue to work over lunch since they're on the campus anyway and can have meetings while eating. Also offering dinner allows (encourages) staffers to put in longer hours not having to run out for meals. No, this is strictly an efficiency / security decision by the corporate overlord.
Option 3: Evolved Socialism -
Beyond robots - add in 3d printing of all goods supplies including food and replacement organs ( https://3dprint.com/118932/uc-... ) Now - nobody needs to do, ANYTHING. We have the real potential of this becoming reality. The only work will be to improve yourself and your society. Think Star Trek culture.
Men ONLY MAKE UP 3% of Preschool & Kindergarten Teachers! WHY ARE WE NOT SCREAMING ABOUT THIS?!?!?! http://www.menteach.org/resour...
This MUST be some kind of conspiracy to keep MEN out of these jobs!!!!! We need action NOW!
no, FU! We manage and hire, and with your attitude, well, it's crystal clear which end of the spectrum you fall and why we (boomers) won't hire you. Keep mommies basement warm junior.
"Never attribute to malice that which may be adequately explained by incompetence:
I believe in many cases this is likely not direct age discrimination but just naive, lazy programmers and lax QA testers.
It's likely the drop down boxes are a result of developers given incomplete data sets and don't think far enough ahead, or don't care.
I switched tech jobs at 50 with zero problems. The vast majority of my peers (director level and above tech management) are 40+. There's always room for good people.
Another brilliant specimen that just wants to jump on the anti-trump band wagon without thinking - Lopez-Alegria was Navy test pilot therefore he HAS VA benefits. -- you fail.
Talk about a politically motivated fake news article! I'll bet there NO correlation between this FUD (Fear Uncertainty Doubt) pack of misinformation and current events.
First - ALL FORMER MILITARY (honorably discharged) members HAVE LIFE LONG HEALTH CARE at the VA!
Second - Michael Lopez-Alegria was a US Naval test pilot!
THERE FORE: ok brain surgeon- use Aristotelian logic and fill in the "therefore"
Our system may not be the best, and there's plenty of Trump haters, but come on, making crap up doesn't help anyone.
Most, if not all astronauts have military backgrounds. Mostly due to requirement #2 " At least 1,000 hours pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft. Flight test experience is highly desirable."
see: https://www.nasa.gov/audience/...
It is true they do not have "access to the doctor of his choice", all former military have access to VA benefits for life.
Which is more than can be said for 99% of US born citizens.
When you open with that phrase "First, the U.S. government needs probable cause," it can only go down hill. We know for fact the US Government has been recording every single phone call since (c) 2005 without warrants
Newer example: Stingray! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
Secondly, drug seizure laws: increasingly used by local law enforcement as revenue enhancement venues, exceeded $5B in 2014 (more $$ than were lost in burglary's) requires no probable cause - and you must prove otherwise.
So when the head of some 3 letter law enforcement organisation makes blatantly false statements in the face of demonstrative evidence to the contrary, this only serves to increase distrust of law enforcement.
I have amazon prime for shipping. I have relatives that live all over the US and it's very handy, as well as one day shipping when i need something (it's available in my area). the problem with Netflix remains content owners. Studios, lawyers and ISP's are trying to rob the last dollar from the American consumer (with the blessing Lord Trump) all the while the really good and NEW content is available for streaming in Foreign countries. There's zero reason foreign subscribers should have better content for the same service other than greed. And it's only going to get worse, much worse if the current Administration has they're way.
Let's start with wiretapping, search and seizure, and US Code - Chapter 119: WIRE AND ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATIONS INTERCEPTION - and that's just thinking about it for a minute. I'm sure there's a plethora of State violations as well.
So, Just like Snowden, let's ignore the purportedly criminal and corrupt activity of the US Government and it's elected thugs - and just kill the messenger. Sweep the body under the run and strong arm anyone with evidence to go away.
Case Closed, mission accomplished, normality achieved.
Easy to say - Higher education isn't free in the US. If you feel that way, then you need to pony up the cash, or write some conversion routine, or just keep quiet.
In the Corporate and Government worlds - where compatibility (Office Suite) , manageability, and security are key - it is a Windows desktop world. Servers are mostly Microsoft with a few Linux niche servers (usually web servers) Macs still exists in small offices or marketing / design companies. Managing in a systematic, secure and cost effective manor means minimizing platforms and standardization. It's nice that Universities have all sorts of time, energy and dollars to tweak incompatible crap to "work", but that's not the real world - especially if security is even a remote consideration.
And they did this by GIVING Apples to schools for free. It was an investment in their future by indoctrinating millions of users to the Apple platform and betting they would be life long users. To a degree, it worked. However, that was a generation ago. Schools are short on dollars and chromebooks are the financial way to go.
Only ½ the mental exercise was completed. Remember - the Rich” derive their profit by selling goods and services. The Great Depression following the stock market crash of 1929 happened when 25% of workers lost their jobs.
If nobody can pay rent, what good is being a landlord?
Think about this, if automation replaces say, 50% of the work force, who has money to buy the goods and services the oligarchy is selling? Nobody. No restaurants, movies, cars, auto repair shops, shoe stores – all gone because nobody can afford them, any of them.. Without taking money from the poor, the rich stop being rich . Look at Walmart – 4 of the Walton’s have more wealth than ½ of the US. Completely destitute street people don’t buy things at Walmart – they go to soup kitchens, Good Will, churches for handouts. Multiply this on a global scale – the entire system collapses. There’s no more rich. Government economies collapse due to the Oligarchy refusing to pay taxes and the poor not working while receiving benefits.
Without becoming an altruistic ‘star trek’ like economy, were people work for the purpose of self and social betterment, wide spread automating is not only impractical but economically unviable.
I have to agree. People confuse a task algorithm with AI. Intelligence (the 'I' in AI) is dynamic learning without bound coming to new conclusions. Today we have single task algorithms and claim they're self learning or intelligent. When when single machines can make non-linear jumps across disciplines then we've got something.
Banks typically want you to be in the 1/3 of your cost. So, as a super rough estimate, multiply your annual salary by 3x and that's the house you can afford. $300K is about all you can do on $100K salary without a huge down.
Seattle isn't far behind. Rents are increasing 20%-40% annually. As are housing prices;
Here’s a house pending sale on Zillow:. Look at the price history;
2/7/2017- sold $485K
2/18/2015 – sold $367K
10/27/14 - Sold: $240K
12/28/07 – Sold; $170K

The only way to get into real estate is buy some thing small and crappy and fix it, stay a few years, and move up - which is, by the way, exactly what we used to do. There were things called "starter" homes. You built equity then moved up.
That's complete Bullsh*t.
I live in Seattle. Boeing announced it will be cutting jobs in 2017 due to " fierce competition with rival Airbus and a drop in new orders".
They will be cutting the number of planes produced per month. http://www.bizjournals.com/sea...
