  4. I'm living proof on Evidence That Good Moods Prevent Colds · · Score: 1

I've noticed this firsthand, for almost 20 years I worked on the road where I would meet many people, I was outside most of the time during the year all by myself, any contact with the company or co-workers was by phone. I would get many colds, sometimes back-to-back which I thought was unusual but I hated my job and going to work everyday I thought it was normal for me to catch a cold or two, or more, every year - or so I thought.

I'm now inside doing a similar job but I work with about two hundred people, I've worked there for almost two years, it's great! I used to be quite shy but now being "on stage" as I refer to it really has helped me and I'm much more social, I haven't been sick since I started working there.

My shyness hasn't been cured, it's who I am, and I still don't have a girlfriend but to me my new healthier work environment (it's not prefect but way better than before) is proof that being happy is good for your health and possibly prevents many types of illnesses.

  5. Firefox browser, model of simplicity on Norman & Spolsky - Simplicity is Out · · Score: 1

I'm glad to see most people here agree that simple is better.

Take the obvious example of Firefox it's a simple browser that has exploded in popularity. You can make it as complex as you want with extensions but that's not why it's so popular, it's the simple clean design, it functions well for what it is and nothing more.

Ice breaking ships use something similar but it's to help break ice not to help reduce friction for the purpose of traveling through the water. It helps break the ice probably in a similar way that hovercraft ice breakers do by causing a cavity to form under the surface of the ice and it collapses.

The activity factor is the very reason I like the Wii rather than other static form of gaming. I don't have one yet but it certainly looks like fun.

Do the Wii remotes have rumble? I've read reviews about how boxing and golf feel weird due to no feedback, even a small bit of rumble would help to make it feel more real and also help you gauge your response.

  16. No cursive for you on New Zealand To Allow 'Text-Speak' On Exams · · Score: 1

A friend of mine said his child's teacher refused to teach them cursive writing because it wasn't needed anymore, the Web, newspapers, pretty much everything is written as block text.

I've also noticed quite a few adults "write" notes and letters in block letters instead of cursive, these are business executives, professors not your average Joe they are professionals! It looks childish, it would be even worse if they also used " u r " instead of "you are".

  17. Open versus closed on Will the U.S. Lose Control of the Internet? · · Score: 1

It's ironic how anyone who frequents Slashdot can say it's a good thing for a less choice. The whole Windows/Mac OS, locked-down source code programs versus Open Source should make everyone want to be able to modify or control anything to do with control over anything to do with Internet.

It's the GUI or the "Windows" part.

I'd say KDE looks like MS Windows, "cold" with a more industrial/business look and GNOME is more Mac-like, rounder with more cartoonish looking icons and menus. I used to hate GNOME but now I prefer it over KDE.

One point the speaker made was even if something embarrassed you that didn't give you the right to hide or withold information someone asks for, unless it's of a personal nature. If you write it and it's public, expect it to be available to anyone who asks to see it.

When some of these students, lawyers or journalists, graduate I'm sure they'll be demanding access to information as part of their job. maybe even a student's essay.
