here's my review of the VIA EPIA M10000 (the earlier revision before the MII's)
the M10k (and presumably the faster/better MII12000's) handles DVD's fine assuming you have a software DVD decoder/player that lets you enable "hardware assist/accelleration"
well that's teh big advantage to these mobo's besides just size... lower power requirements (compared to intel/AMD)... although at lower performance... I just put up a review (sorry for the plug...) of the not quite as horizontally challenged VIA EPIA M10000 Review
summary: small, quiet, low power comsumption, slightly underpowered compared to intel/amd, but surprisingly usable.
with bittorrent functionality this close to your PVR content... and RSS action, one could see where if enough mythTV boxen where onlin with this (and seeded), a true "on demand" programming that would beat the pants of what certain cable companies are offering currently.
*this* is why OSS and open standards and community/hacking innovation is soooo cool.
you can control your digital box via serial cable (in some cases, notably certain motorolla boxes) or via IR blaster (the same way my "real" tivo controls my Scientific atlanta digital cable box right now...)
*shrug* ymmv, but it is possible... although htpc aren't for everyone...
granted a lot of the programming is foreign... but theres plenty of free satellite music, pbs, and uh... stuff... great way to get news from diffeent sources all over the world.
any card that relies on software encoding has been problematic and junky...
I've had good luck so far with hardware encoding tuner cards (hauppauge wintv pvr250/350 both internal pci cards) YMMV of course.
PArt of the challenge is finding the right hardware to match with your software/os choice (or vice versa) little bit of a chicken and egg versa vice decision process...
On a whim I bought the album on itunes (i'm a big GN'R fan and kinda like STP)...
I wonder if russian ripping service allofmp3 has this album... dammit not yet contraband search returns
"Men at Work - Contraband - The Best Of Men At Work "... who can it be now, knocking on my door.. it's RIAA don't make a sound....
I liked the single on VR contraband (slither) but the rest of the album sounds a little half arse... there's one decent ballad on there that's kinda like a country'ed up "sweet child o mine" *Shrug*
... not that it's closing, but that it's so sudden... he should have known if this was coming and been forthright about it, instead of pulling the roberto duran "no mas"
>> OK - What I want to know is if anyone out there has been successful in getting MythTV (or FreeVo) working successfully under Slackware.
I've tried (and I am certainly no Linux newbie) and could not get all the dependancies to work/compile/install. I spent the better part of 3 days working on it when I gave up. >> well a great user on byopvr site put together a guide for just that.
"To me, if TiVo's the best, and still cheaper (at least for the first couple of years of use), why use homebrew except for bragging rights?"
well, as I've stated on many occasions... building your own PVR isn't for everybody. It helps if you like to tinker with PCs/software/etc... not everyone likes to DIY but I do =)
that said, I love my Tivo.. but it isn't everything. I kinda wish I got a replayTV as Tivo's home media options (which you pay more to network your Tivo to your PC, sorta) is a joke.
A tivo with lifetime subscription is 110 (after rebate 40 hours) + 300... 410
I'd much rather pay that in hardware/toys to play with (you do know you are on slashdot, right? =)) and then some to have MORE functionality (like weather modules, RSS feeds, MAME, mp3's, divx, and so on....)...
*shrug* again DIY PVr is not for everyone, but it's not a meritless endeavor. And yes, you may end up spending more, especially if you want it small/sexy looking, than you'd ever pay for a Tivo+subscription...
I must say in the short time I've been running the site, the advancements in the software has been really amazing... SageTV (not free beer/speech... cue boo's and hisses) works awesome with my pvr350 and approaches tivo-esque look/feel/usability...
dead tree edition... then see the articles posted here after they hit the wired website a few days later =)

that the pet shop boys were that popular?!
Or is it legions of morrisey fans?
e.
well besides people are fed up with windoze virii/exploits etc...
I think they are building their base for more DRM crap. I wonder if they slipped any DRM type stuff in the thickets of sp2...
although maybe I just have my tinfoil hat on too tight today =P
e.
uh actually, unless I misread the review... currently you have to use an ati product adjacent to the hdtv tv wonder...
they'll be adding generic gul in later driver software revisions... supposedly...

just have to roll up my sleeves and do it myself, because otherwise my "converged" media will be a DRM'd crippled mess.
