With the renewed interest in beos thanks to the leaked 5.1/dano release, developers for beos should seriously consider trying for a native compiler since the various jvm projects arent going anywhere fast. If beos could run java apps, I could see this renewed interest continue to grow at amazing rates..
kinda sounds like what the troll hunters on the anandtech forums do when someone gets ripped off.. they often hunt down people and generally make life miserable for people who don't follow through with online trade deals..
But we already have a tax on the stupid.. its called the lottery.. if we had more, the stupid would then become poor and homeless and resort to get rich quick schemes to make money..
I think laptops work by getting the applications and OS into a safe and simpler state and then saving that state. I suspect they cannot save any arbitrary application you could write - just the applications they routinely run.
If you've ever used a laptop with this feature you'd realize what you just said is totally wrong.. the hibernate function of these laptops is managed by hardware not software and so is os and program agnostic. When you close the lid or hit the sleep button, it dumps the entire state of the ram in to a special partition and turns off.. when you revive it, you are back exactly where you left off, regardless if you are running windows or linux or if you are playing quake3 or cracking rc5 stuff.
By managing this stuff in hardware, its actually less complicated and works 100% of the time as opposed to the windows software solution that often refuses to 'wake' after being put in sleep mode and is dependant on the power supply being on and supporting the feature.
If someone were to add a feature like this to a large multiuser mainframe type system, it would definately make more sense to go with a hardware based solution that dumped the system state to a disk or multiple disks to ensure that it always worked and not just some of the time for some of the apps.
Why not just figure out a better way to run old apps than to boot up basically the entire old os.. windows2000 can run dos and win3.1 win95 etc apps without loading the entire old kernel/os. Realistically, Apple could do the same if they spent a little bit more time on the problem.. but then you wouldn't have all the other cool advances to MacOS..
OS X needs this especially for the "Classic" environment. It seems so stupid watching macos9 boot up in a window when you want to use a classic program; Apple ought to save the state of the classic environment in to a file that could be quickly reloaded into ram when classic is called for. As the blurb said, laptops have had the suspend feature for years; would it really be so hard to apply the same concept elsewhere?
I think the key is really to just keep everything, but not do anything illegal. Or if thats too hard, just keep everything and no document the illegal going's on..
hmmmm first he talks about taking a break and then getting ready for the next big thing and then he says:
NewsForge: How about original games native to Linux?
Draeker: If I were going to start a new Linux game company tomorrow that's what I would do.
maybe after the break thats what he'll do.. not be optimistic.. but the idea of cool original games for linux is just thrilling.. granted tux racer was pretty original.. but the linux community needs something more in the way of games..
we all should have seen this coming since loki filed for chaper 11 like 6 months ago.. to my knowledge, most companies don't usually recover from that..
its a shame though, the more I use linux, the more I wished the programs I like to use and play worked so I didn't have to switch back to windows to accomplish the everyday things I like to do.
amazingly yahoo did the same thing.. they originally bought their content from altavista, then they got it themselves, and now they buy search content from google..
This guy is quoted in the article as saying he can't even hold his computer mouse anymore without pain.. whats he think is happening to him? magical ray eminating from the mouse are microwaving his hand.. out of all the computer equipment most people use, surely the mouse is the least dangerous..

It disturbs me that this crazy person can collect disability for the fact that he thinks electronics harm him..
Please.. just because a new version of qnx came out, don't post stories about how cool the Icon's were running qnx 2.0 or whatever..
You don't see the ms people reminiscing about windows 3.1 everytime a new version or service pack for windows comes out..
QNX rtp 6 isn't anything like the cli version of qnx that ran on the old icons that the canadian school system is/was so found of.
Instead, you could download qnx rtp and post informative comments discussing its merits compared to other modern day os's or something similiar and actually on topic to the story.
I wonder if any of these comics that are sold in pdf are indexable in anyway.. google has this cool search where they somehow highlight your search even if its a word printed in a scanned catalog image. This technology would be great for comics which are generally scanned artwork and not originally digital products.
Yeh.. Penny Arcade has a much better approach to it than most places.. they give you the comic for free.. and sell things you might want and if you do decide to give them some money they give you some free stuff as a thankyou.. that much better than the comic sites that start out free, get a bunch of halfway dedicated users and then try to screw them over by switching to a totally pay system thereby alienating the original fans.. I'd even go so far as to speculate that PA probably makes more money in the long run off donations than the sites that charge for everything.. people are often more likely to give more and or more often if its of their own will.. plus the PA book idea was hella cool.. even if their publisher isn't really equiped to get it done on time..
While the sorcery metaphors seems a tad bit overdone, the whole idea seems like a good one.. the package management (if one can rightly call compiling source package management) appears to be easy to use from the general description of it all.. it appears like it has an apt-get kinda ease to it.. its a shame the main site for the distro has been/.'ed but I can see where that would happen once all us get wind of it and run to download the iso's. hopefully someone that has used it can better comment on the ease of use overall and the package management especially.
I've been saying for some time that I wanted a linux distro that would compile itself self and be optimized specifically for the system it was installed on.. everyone I talked to about it said I was crazy and that there would be no need for such a thing or that it would be a waste of time to optimize it so..
A true replacement for the car?? It is still a car.. you just have less choice of where you want to go because once you leave your house, you can only ride on the tracks and only go where the tracks lead.. this doesn't seem like a good thing imho..
This is really anything new.. I live in IL and I've heard of one of the larger state schools doing this.. and I've heard a lot of the younger professors describe this exact same thing from their days in the university..
whats sad is the amount of false positives produced by these things..
I'm just glad my school doesn't implement something like this.. it would be more of a hassle than anything..

I don't think playing the sympathy card by saying it empowers blind people will help much..
Everyone knows blind people have been violating copyright laws for ages by illegally copying and distributing books on tape.
I can't possibly imagine why any noble company such as Elcomsoft would want to be aligned with evil blind people.

no.. the interviewee specifically noted that using a computer mouse made her hands hurt.. obviously they used a computer occaisionally to learn that..

Then how are we supposed to be able to buy or download cheap pirated versions of adobe software in the US??
