  1. Test run on Internet Backbone DDOS "Largest Ever" · · Score: 3, Insightful

Well we can laugh about it now (What DOS? my instinct when I read about this was to flip the unsuccessful hax0rs the bird) but my concern is that this could be a test run for something more unpleasant.
Maybe to cause a false sense of security, maybe to analyse how those crucial networks cope with DOS attacks so as to be more successful next time.
Whether these people were Bin Laden's boys or garden variety hax0rs don't get too comfortable. The worst is yet to come.

  2. As much as I liked Palmpilots.. on Palm m100s - A Pattern of Defects? · · Score: 1

I've had two Palms, a iiie (no problems, I sold it recently) and a couple of iiics. The iiic had quality control issues out the wazzo. Between touchscreen issues to creeping case cracks, they pretty much suck in actual use. My current iiic is fine (touch wood) but I don't know if I'd go with Palm again.
There are more interesting and durable options, esp if you live in the US of A. With the more recent Palms, the quality control issues seem to have increased (perhaps cost-cutting in manufacture). Its a shame because I remember when the Palm Pro, Palm iii and Palm V were the duck's nuts for durability and usability.
I think it's yet another unwritten but widely acknowledged rule... every new thing, no matter how innovative and well-thought out, eventually turns to crap. Restaraunts, movies (through sequels and prequels), technology companies...

It is the most useful damn tool I have ever owned. The other things you need to give her are ibuprofen, the address of the nearest Planned Parenthood, a Sharpie marker (VERY useful), and a good torch.

Not necessarily true. I lasted six months at my first job, and a year (and counting) at my second real gig. Of course if you count my two weeks at WeConsultDodgily and another two weeks in the glorious fast food industry inbetween jobs you probably come out with an *average* more like three months, but if the job isn't an obvious deathtrap it would be unusual for IT folks in Au lasting shorter than that.

  11. Women no longer unequal to men on Lab Develops Artificial Womb · · Score: 1

How much does it suck to have your career terminated or suspended due to pregnancy? Now parents can take an equal part in the *creation* and raising of their kids. I don't want to risk my health carrying a child, and I'm sick of women not being taken seriously in their jobs because it's assumed that they'll get knocked up, require matenity leave, and most likely terminate their employment? In this situation, either party can take the time off and care for the children, or split it between them, because it will be a non-issue until the child is actually born.
This is also a necessary step in a world where men can become parents in seconds (and indeed that sometimes is the limit of their involvement). Women can choose to be sterilized, assume full reproductive control, and when they choose to have a child, choose when and in what situation it is concieved.

It could be misused, but so can most technological advances. I like to think of this device ending gender disparity. I don't think vomiting, varicose veins and stretch marks are a necessary condition for femininity :)

We in regional areas (I'm in FNQ) get totally overlooked. Everybody might be getting screwed by Telstra but don't make the mistake of thinking you're 'suffering' because we diverted facilities away from you. Not bloody likely.

  14. kernel backups, and newbie mode on Should Aunt Tillie Build Her Own Kernels? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Aunt Tillie can do anything she wants, as long as the software she's using to do it will automatically back up the current, working kernel with *no prompting* (because you know she'll just click past it if it takes too long, right?), and if the OS has the 'newbie' flag set, it also won't let her do it without a working boot disk. This isn't so much for her, more for the poor person who has to make the computer boot after Tillie's had her way with it.
Newbie flag, you say? I say Linux should have a newbie flag set in the system somewhere (selectable on installation) which is basically linux with training wheels. It provides detailed prompting, hand-holding, and will try to let the user be able to recover from Really Stupid Mistakes.
Applications which support it will also have additional prompting, plus a training mode, perhaps. This adds usuability for newbies and stays out of the way of those of us who vaguely know what we're doing.
Hey, it's a thought.... at the moment, there are no gradations. It's Win9x or WinMe for newbies, and linux for us. If linux had a training mode, wouldn't it be better for both Aunt Tillie and Slashdotters in training?

The pure organisers are dead. I mean, the nifty applications on your Palm are *not* the standard apps, are they?
Palm tried this with the VII series but they got it horribly wrong (tied to one kind of network, webclipping, graffitti sucks as an interface for communication, *only* usuable in the US). Maybe Handspring will get it right.

Say what you want about MacOS, the new imac design is sweet! Of course, by the time you add a pile of plug -in peripherals it won't look half as cool...but if I had money to throw around, I'd buy one. It makes more sense on a cramped desk, in 35 degree (Celsius) heat, than my giant beige AMD behemoth with the extra-toasty 17" monitor.
It would be nice to be able to squeak the whole machine in the space you'd put a vase.
Small is the future for home and office pcs. I love powerful, expandable workstations as much as anybody but they're horribly inefficient in power and in the heat and waste they produce. Bring on the (small, cute) future!

Or not. The terrorists knew America. They knew procedures and policies for hijackings. They knew how to fly a commercial airliner. They had classmates who are Americans. They would have to have been in the States a reasonable amount of time, and interacted with Americans every day they were there, up until the final moments when they told their helpless cargo to call their loved ones.
They knew us, they knew how we westerners think. They were not ignorant. They knew there were human beings involved. Yet they were capable of this atrocity anyway.

If I stumbled across a second hand one around here I'd snap it up, just to see what the fuss is about :). Why get into these holy wars, Newton vs PocketPC vs Palm? Just buy the one that does what you need it to at the time, at a reasonable price point, and be happy with what you have. If I'd bought the eMate, I'd still be using it. Now I have a Palm iiic. It's just the luck of the draw.
