    At work we have something around 500 Linux desktops, and almost 1K cluster nodes, all of them are installed using Kisck start(well almost all of them). Very neat and good effort, should try it out.

    thats why i ask the question, its because i work in a major corp too that migrates all its SOlaris/AIX/IRIX applications, which include major number crunching/visualization to Linux.

    Honestly they were (and i was too despite my years of experience) impressed with the improvement we yield with Linux, and they took their decision based on months of testing, years of experience, and lots of money, and i mean LOTS of it.

    But alaas.....nobody would admit it for the reasons you said.

    But yet its good to know that its gaining ground, and that the this specific marketing hype you hear is true, when it comes to real life experiece you get in the field; though it might not always be, actually it really differes from one env. to another.

    Ok, now i dont mean to troll here, so mod down if you wish, i really dont care.... BUT...
    I am a linux user/programmer/lover for the past few years now, and i wanna see a company that is not SO IN LOVE with linux say what have just been said by IBM above.
    In other words, i dont want to see companies who sell Linux, or who have benefit in selling Linux praise it. Does any one of you know of someone who fills in these criteria. Sun for one is not very fond of Linux, nor is MS ofcorse (despite the fact sometimes i doubt they have code in their stuff from Linux...)...to make a long story short
    It would be really nice if such a judgment came from someone else besides IBM/REDHAT/ORACLE...

    If it had been any other company than Microsoft it never would have been news.

    First of this is news becuase THIS IS Microsoft we are talking about here, which is the richest company in the world, most systematic and organized (supposingly) in the world, and the sentence"doesnt have a clue" should apply to anyone but them, but hey... who ever said life is so predictable.

    Second.. if any other company had a security problem and patch system that has been and needs to be patched will be news in a comic book and not /. ....

    This is serious, do you know how many businesses each with thousands of employees run Dell computers. Dell's main market is not individuals like you and me, its cooerperates and enterprises, that for exdample order 10,000 PC's/year or something. Now i cant imagine what would happen if such a thing was done with some BIG folks..

    I added NTFS readonly (which is safe) support in my kernel, and always add a small fat partition in my dual boot system, as a spool are between both, have been doing it for years, and am happy with it. But i still like that hack though, pretty neat work.

    take a look at this and tell me one single company that has such ideas, technology and momentum as google. This article talks about google as if Google is planning to stay as it is for the next decade, ofcorse not.... they might be stupid(which i doubt), but they have so much ideas and "know-how" in their heads they can re-revolutionize (i cant say that word again :)) the web search
    technology.

    Mr Szulik, ofcorse you realize that MS's dominance leverged from the fact that their OS not only runs in offices, but also runs on 99.9% of home computers. Dont you think that the effort/money spent on the regular, non-profitable RH Linux would achieve almost the same result to the same staus of your OS. I know that RH Linux was a very big burden and resource eater, but on the long run, it would have paid off big time, and RedHat would have benfited the most being the #1 Linux distributor in the world, and if RH Linux was to be there, it would have remained the #1 distributor.

    Yes they do still sell the RH Workstation, but did you ever consider where does MS gets its strength, its because ppl like you, me, and millions others have either MS 98, ME, XP, 2000 on their personal computers back home, with either Office 98, 2000 or XP installed, with Windows Media PLayer installed.... Thats how MS became so popular.

    Its not only about the enterprise my friend, if you as an individual is ready to use Linux on your desktop back home, then you are gonna use it on your desktop back at work.
    The regular secratary propably has Windows 98 back at her home, she doesnt have Redhat 9, nor mandrake and certainly not debian nor slackware....

    Because i swear i read a couple of days ago that RedaHat will stop its RedHat Linux line, and stick with the RedHat Advanced server

    Through out my career, a single Linux distibutor claiming that MS products are crap, in fact its always the other way round. I mean MS has the money, has the man power, has the technology, and despite that they are depromoting Linux and OSS distributors who lack all of the above advantages . You know why
    ... because OSS developers prove it through their work, they work hard, make good SW, and deliver the msg practically without words and marketing FUD, let the hardware speak for its self...

    I presume thats enough for any serious,knowledgable IT decision maker to make up his mind if he was ever faced with the choice .

    connectix did not run Linux in the first place.... it was mainly designed for windows VM's. That makes me wonder will Linux perform well considerably on this VM or not, putting in my that it was first designed to run Windows.

    are there for that exact reason. I cannot think of any easier tools to use,drag and drop components,almost no coding unless necessary, espically delphi. I wont be mentioning C builder as user has to be familiar with c++ and with OOP, inheritance, overriding and all that stuff.

    But he has to keep in mind that the things you do with such a tool are quite limited, the more automated the process is, the less room for inovation he has...

    So you guys wanna tell me that even if thy did have the originals they are gonna buy them. They are gonna actually gonna spend money on games instead of food, shelter, medicine...

    besides, the whole idea of such a survey is obssured, can you tell me how many sick kid is in Iraq without medication, how many elder is threatened to die beucase of lack of medicine/food????
    No instead we go and see how many of them pay games, on what stations, of what type....

    PLease give me a break..
