How long before "most Microsoft programs" have little bits of code added to shot them working on anything but offical microsoft windows.. that really would be the end of lindows
On the other hand the day could come when for-windows software publishers are more careful and test their programs in Lindows before realeasing, or provide patches or whatever to make their programs run on Wine. That would be a good bussiness move for any software publisher as it increases it's target market. If Microsoft programs don't work on Linux it's their own problem and loss.
The complexity would increase in the network protocols not in the way the saoftware it used by the people. So the programs could still be simple (are they simple now?) and provide all this nice counter measures. Maybe someday we would use intelligent agents which one teaches what kind of files one wants to get and they go and find them. Maybe just select a profile or a type of music and the program would take care of searching and selecting based on ones preferences.
...but if you run windows you really should get some Anti virus software.
I have been using windows for years without having an antivirus installed. I sometimes intall an antivirus and check the system just to make sure, and I haven't gotten a virus since the times when computer games could fit into a single or a couple of 1.44mb disks.
Ok, so I once clicked on one of those stupid email viruses, what an idiot! But I just had to fix something up in the registry with regedit, I found detailed instructions on the web. 10 minutes it took.
So I really don't need an antivirus. I agree my mom probably would be safer with one but I think these days antivirus software is only for the people who don't know a thing about computers and are not careful. Everyone else is safe.
I can't help but wonder what the response would be if Microsoft sold Office for 30 bucks. Wouldn't they then be criticized for using their monopoly powers to sell their product, at a loss, such that they could further dominate the word processing market?
At least that way people in developing countries would afford to pay for software and governments wouldn't have to be bribed to pass laws.
Those tools are pricey because they are much better than the competition for some task. But I've been using OpenOffice.org, and although it makes me mad sometimes, I have no reason to buy another office suite. For $30 may be.
From the article: "He said Microsoft could replicate necessary portions of the operating system before taking out a feature like the Web browser. But he guessed that the change could make Windows "100 to 1,000 times more bloated." "
So what if Windows is 1000 times more bloated? It happens every couple years anyway...
The costs will realign themselves to make it impossible to for individuals to contemplate downloading squat since the cost of transmission will equal or exceed the cost purchase of a hard good.
Only businesses will be able to use the net and the size of those businesses will scale with the cost per packet. Eventually, only the rich and large corporations will be on the net and by then it won't be worth using.
I don't see how all of this is supposed to happen. If this "rich and large corporation network" was true I would simply reinvent the same Internet we have now and offer the same low prices we have now and everyone would use it, and who's going to stop me. My point is exactly when is the trend towards bigger cheaper bandwidth is going to turn around so this that you talk about comes true?
"They will collect on every packet?" WTF are you talking about man? You know there is Internet in other countries where we don't give a shIt for IBM or MS, exactly for what is we're going to have to pay them?
I would have traded the opportunity to say this just to mod your comment down a bit, less time wasted for me or the rest of readers. Shame on whoever modded this up in the first place.
people who call customer support just need help with some problem they have with the software/network or whatever. Most of the times they are not tech types and wouldn't know if they are being lied to or if the support guy is a monkey. But sometimes we can tell that he is in fact lying or a monkey. I don't think anyone is seriously generalizing that all customer support guys are monkeys, but we all know they're out there. What you talk about is true. Maybe they wouldn't be monkeys if the company would invest in training or had stable, working, easy to use software/network in the first place.
abviously the two clients are not EXACTLY the same. If even the.exe file name changes you could attack one and not the other. Deeper changes exist probably.
I don't think they faked the attacks. I have been using Morpheus the past week and the service was slow and sometimes you couldn't connect at all. The program gave strange errors like "you need to update your program to the new version" (There is no new official version yet). It worked fine on my other machine though. The musiccity website was down also. So I kind of thinks they really got DOSed, that's the feeling I get from what I saw.
I think the problem is that the flag has "too much meaning" behind it, it stands for too many things and might be misleading. For example someone may think that it is an official government site. They need to think of somthing else to distinguish themselves.
"We do not in any way represent the Canadian Government, any of its Departments, nor official policies. The contents of this website are solely the efforts and expressions of a volunteer, grassroots Chapter of FORCES International"
Don't all Linux distros claim to be "not just another Linux distro?"
Of course they do, and they also claim that "Once installed, it will be 100% optimised for your hardware, it will include the very latest Linux applications and it will provide an incredibly convenient way of keeping all software, even essential system libraries, up-to-date.":-)
Informative? That's not the ad they are talking about it was an X10 link that was taken off soon after. It was mixed in with the real news and not clearly marked.
Some people are saying that the correct way of doing things is that every company registers under its own country code and only use.com domains for international or global pages.
This sounds fine but to me in Costa Rica a.co.cr domain costs $50/year and I must go to the bank to pay for it, whereas a.com domain costs like $8 and I can pay over the internet.
Of course we got ourselves a.com domain as many others here.
So the point is if we wanted it to be all nice and pretty then there should be a standard that all registrars should follow (pricing, registration and update procedures). This is a big mess now and there is probably no way to fix it now, even if there was some real international interest.

Here you can read the text of the bill (in Spanish):
Bill 1609
Rather small doc I must add. Quick and to the point I suppose.
Nevermind, I found it: http://foia.fbi.gov/alpha.htm
What is the source of this information? Is there a webpage we can see?

before starting the boycott read the comments here: http://jcp.org/jsr/results/99-7-1.jsp
Many agree with the concerns of Apache although they voted yes.

Ok so there is a new version of Morpheus now:

click here to see how many of the open source developers are male.
Where are the girls at today?
The launch will be on friday morning.
home users $40 for 128kb down and 32kb up (kilobits) max download speed is about 14 kilobytes/s, upload is very slow.
office users pay from $60 up depending on speed.

They say at the site

Check out your own link man! The poll does have a warning and link to the story which says about the fraudulent votes.
It is a Flash pluggin. In no time they will have it running on every browser.
