"She’s designed to go through solid rock, but encountered a stretch of loose, crumbling material that was unsuitable for tunneling. That forced a long and expensive detour."
-sounds like an allegory for the US Government
Ok, I know this isn't FTA, but the headline just made me angry.
I have friends in the medical and banking industries and I hear stories from them all the time about how much work it takes for them to make sure that information is kept private. I work for a government contractor and I spend almost my entire day making sure our systems are secure. Truth be told, it isn't cheap to keep people's information secure... BUT WE DO IT!!! What is the result? You rarely hear of a data breach on these industries that involves a good hack. Breaches are usually limited unless it's an inside job.
Now, there isn't a vendor of any good I know who has decided that information security is something worth paying a dime for. I hear everyone from lawyers to corner-store shop-keepers tell me it's too complicated and expensive to implement basic security (like putting a password on their WAP) or even a decent backup system (like an external HDD and some backup software).
In the end, WHEN these businesses have their data leaked and WHEN they lose their DATA, WE ARE ALL PAYING FOR IT!!!
If you are a vendor and you are reading this, remember this: if you tell me (or possibly any IT person) these excuses, all we hear is that you are CHEAP and LAZY.
So... what you're saying is that the only thing that keeps American hackers from overrunning China with viruses, spam, and various forms of hackery is that we haven't taken the time to learn their language?
That's either impossibly inaccurate or we are incredibly lazy.
Hey Anonymous! Go learn some Chinese.
Dude! Everyone who has any government security clearance is getting told to stay away from Wikileaks on both business computers and personal computers. That's a directive that came down from the DoD. I can understand their shock, but the posture towards this leaked information is all wrong. It seems that they seem fine continuing the the posture they had when the Pentagon Papers were leaked.
The reality is that there is nothing I've read (from new organizations, not Wikileaks) about this information that makes it any sort of "smoking gun." Anyone who gets the news from more than a set a fake tits should have already known a few basic things:
1) The leaders of the Arab countries are very concerned about disarming Iran. They are also very opportunistic and are fine having the US do the dirty work for them
2) Many US diplomats to Europe do a spectacular job of misrepresenting us and the other side to us.
3) Hamid Karzai is running Afghanistan like a cheap bar with shitty patrons and we're the bouncers even though we aren't getting a cut on the deal.
4) Everyone hates everyone else for significant asshattery. Friends and enemies alike are spying on each other.
Compared to the Pentagon Papers, we were learing alot about the lies fed to us from the government. This information is just federal gossip. If the US government was truly serious about quashing this scandal, they'd treat us like adults and just get on the level and say that they're duping us because we need to win our political war, I think this would go away a lot faster.
This is not well known, but Leslie Neilson secretly had a passion for funeral arrangements while off camera. Here is footage of one he put together a few years ago:

If it's the same IT as the one that runs the connecting City Hall, it depends on the day. They've had 2 administrators go to jail in the last 5 years.
Google "Nagin emails" and see what we're working against down here.
We have a new mayor and I think he'll turn the city around, but there is a lot of junk to clean up.
In New Orleans, there have been several murders by people under "house arrest" using the same technology while wearing the device.
I believe that there a large reason for the failure of the devices in these instances was purely poor oversight, but the fact remains that there are plenty of reasons to remove offenders from society for their own punishment. I could see it work for non-violent offenders, but that is only because they were not a threat in the first place. I don't believe "guards" will have the same vigilance as they would in a walled jail because there isn't the obvious danger they are faced with daily.
I think adding 30% more information at the time the copyright is an ingenious idea!
Publishers could really learn from this guy.
In fact, I had a similar....
