First, freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences.
What the fuck does this slogan mean? I keep hearing it. It sounds like the kind of doublethink parents use mistakenly use on their children, like the equivalent of goo goo gaa gaa babytalk but for seven year olds.
It's quite simple really that even a seven year old could understand. It means you can say whatever the fuck you want but that doesn't mean anyone has to listen to you and it doesn't mean that nothing will happen as a result of what you say. If you insult someone and they punch you for it, or throw you out of their property or whatever, they haven't curbed your right to free speech at all.
Maybe stop changing arbitrary definitions. Pluto was always a planet. Fuck you, NASA and shitty celebrity "scientists" like Neil Tyson.
Wow, who actually gives a shit, really? What difference does it make if Pluto is defined as a planet, a dwarf planet, an ice cube or numero uno place in the galaxy? How does that effect anyone enough to get uppity about it? Move on with your life.
Finding that many Earth-sized rocky bodies orbiting a star just 39 lightyears away, with the possibility that some of them may be able to have liquid water on their surface doesn't excite you? Did you have your sense of wonder and curiosity surgically removed?
It's interesting to be sure but far from thrilling (to me), it's kinda non news. Until we put any appreciative effort into actual space travel they might as well be in Andromeda. Hell, can we even actually see them or just 'detect' them? Give me a shout when we pick up radio waves from there or get a picture of one or more of the planets with lights on the darkside. Now that would be more thrilling than there's a star with a bunch of large rocky bodies relatively close in a galactic sense but still an unfathomable distance away.
What's wrong with that? Does she want this guy immediately fired no question asked? If it really is a first offence tell him to knock it off and move on from there,
You did not read the article, did you?
It wasn't his first offence, although HR lied about this, claiming that it was.
He didn't knock it off. Also, her career at the company was affected because she made the report.
What he did should have resulted in an instant dismissal. Retaliation should have resulted in dismissals. Covering up the prior acts by the man should have resulted in dismissals in HR.
In that case, you are right. HR fucked up big time. The guy fucked up too obviously. Well, one time is a fuck up, consistently doing it, yeah, he should be sacked.
Well, let's leave aside the fact that it wasn't the guy's first offense. What would you, as a professional HR person or senior manager, do about that situation?
I tell you what I wouldn't do: I wouldn't issue a warning and assume it just magically fixed the problem. I'd follow up and continue monitoring the situation.
I'd do the same, assuming it was actually the first offence it'd be a warning and monitoring, second offence some kind of sanction and final warning, third time doing the same thing, out the door.
Any sane company would fire this guy immediately. Uber is liable for not getting rid of him. Hope this woman sues the shit out of them.
I disagree. I think any sane company should say something like "seriously, knock that shit off, if you keep it up we're going to have issues". The guy was propositioning for sex which is highly unprofessional and is out of order but it's hardly end of the world stuff. There're a whole bunch of things which could tip the scale but the situation as described doesn't call for more than a warning in my opinion. Would you advocate the same punishment if it was female looking for sex I wonder?
When I reported the situation, I was told by both HR and upper management that even though this was clearly sexual harassment and he was propositioning me, it was this man's first offense, and that they wouldn't feel comfortable giving him anything other than a warning and a stern talking-to.
What's wrong with that? Does she want this guy immediately fired no question asked? If it really is a first offence tell him to knock it off and move on from there, if it happens more follow procedures. It's not like this was a suck me off or your sacked situation.
What, you don't think it's a good use of our elected representatives time to hold highly partisan hearings on what model phone that the President tweets with?
Because I'm sure that's the only device he has with him ever, and never does he have an aide standing by that holds onto whatever phone the Government issued him.
This is the same kind of bullshit the Republicans kept trying for the last 8 years, that Democrats bemoaned. Typical partisan hacks, hacking away instead of actually doing something to make a difference. Like writing legislation to fix problems, or listening to your constituents.
I know right, people complaining the president in potentially carrying an always on audio and video recording device that uploads everything to god only knows where. Who cares if it can scrape all his passwords and emails and whatever else he puts on it. Does it really matter he may very well install malware on whatever he connects it to. Nah none of that matters in the slightest. It's all just yuge fake news, big league. Sad.
Or we could make road users pay 100% of the cost of the roads instead of less than half, and find out if people still prefer to drive.
Only if you're going to remove the benefit of the roads from those who don't directly use them, so no food/shopping that has been trucked. I'm guessing these people you're talking about don't ever get taxis or buses either or order take out or anything like that.
There are plenty of manufacturers who *don't* glue their batteries in...
Plenty? To the best of my knowledge, there's only one: LG. Unfortunately, the other LG hardware I've dealt with has been a train wreck of poorly tested firmware updates that I've had to expend considerable effort rolling back because of serious bugs, and I almost bought their refrigerator until I started reading the reviews and ran away screaming. And that's the same company that seriously resisted helping their smart TV users fix devices bricked by ransomware.
At least the worst problems I've had with an iPhone can be fixed by a screwdriver, a spudger, a putty knife, and a bit of excessive force.
More than LG don't. I have a lumia 950 (I know but that's not the point) with a removable battery that sits very nicely in its space, doesn't rattle, doesn't fall out, is easy to get to and replace and not a drop of glue or screw in sight.

TL:DR

Same thing for the most part.
Bloody kids, I knew the average age was young here but geez Louise that's about 2 decades off me!
You know you're old when you say thing like geez louise...
How much an Apple is like a Big Mac.
What, good looking in pictures and tasty in theory but actually a disappointing mess of crap?
We don't have rednecks, that's an American Innovation (tm).
Yeah, in Britain they are called wetnecks.
No, they are called scallys
In TFA which I admittedly hadn't read at time of post, yes. In TFS, no. Morale of the story. Always RTFA.
You did not read the article, did you?

After actually reading the story and finding out the one time thing line is a lie I'd be inclined to agree.
Any sane company would fire this guy immediately. Uber is liable for not getting rid of him. Hope this woman sues the shit out of them.

So you think that is an immediately sackable offence?
When I reported the situation, I was told by both HR and upper management that even though this was clearly sexual harassment and he was propositioning me, it was this man's first offense, and that they wouldn't feel comfortable giving him anything other than a warning and a stern talking-to.

Your claim falsely assumes that everything can be explained in simple terms.
It can. If you are unable you don't understand it well enough. We already established this.
No, I'm saying people who don't directly use roads still benefit from them.
who wants to ride a public transportation bus around sitting next to some smelly bums?!?
Other smelly bums?
Yes, apple is crying about being one of the most valuable companies with one of the biggest pile of cash sitting around.
The funny part is that they are.
their whole business model seems to be planned obsolescence and non-repairability
Fixed that for you.
