How bout you look into getting a subscription to This American Life at audible so that the artists get a little extra something for their work if you really want to support them.

...to make a recording of the 'interview' available?

I have a problem with literary journalism of this sort; we have absolutely no idea as to the context of the excerpted quotes. I could've dealt with this i he had actually created an audio interview; he did piece it together from recordings in the first place, after all. THAT would've been great (I love hearing authors talk). All this is is a transcription of an interview that never happened with no technical or historical reason for it to be interesting. I'll pass.

    Quick related story:

Back when I had dialup, I switched to a cheaper provider. I was having problems, though - for the life of me I couldn't connect to my non-isp SMTP server.

So I call them up. I get a pseudo-techie (the kind with lists of ANDIFs and no practical computer knowledge. He starts in on asking me What operating system I'm running and all that. Figuring that saying OS X would be a problem I waid, "Look, that really doesn't matter. All I need to know is if you guys block off port 25." He insisted that he needed to know what operating system I was running to answer that question. Silly techie person. :)

  6. Perspective from an ex Barnes & noble lackey on Digital Shoplifting From Bookstores? · · Score: 2, Interesting

People do this all the time at the Barnes & Noble where I used to work, except they would plop down in the art section with a stack of books, whip out a bigass digital camera and start snapping away. When politely informed that they were breaking the law and would be removed from the store if they continued they got amazingly indignant, like we actually WERE a library.

Sometimes I cannot believe the ballsiness of people.

Well to be fair, I didn't realise their delivery area was quite THAT small (if I did I wouldn't have posted it that way) but I really have to object at your characterization of Grammercy Park; it's not a six-figure neighborhood. It's not cheapsville either, but I live there and don't make anywhere NEAR that kind of money.

In New York City a company called "Fetch-a-flick" allows you to order DVDs online. They deliver within an hour, you keep the movie for 3-5 days, put it in the supplied envelope and drop it in a mailbox (or leave it with your doorman). All for 4 bucks each. I'd love to do business with netflix but the last thing I need is another monthly charge, and fetchaflick quenches the impulse renting urge. If you live in Manhattan check 'em out - I highly recommend them. (Caveat: their delivery area isn't huge) Fetchaflick.

No, I don't work for them, I'm just really happy with their services.

I also couldn't find any...reputable...sources to back you up. No established newspapers, no college publications or anything close. Certainly not anything cited or researched.

I did, however, find articles that refute you, like this one. Unlike all the other things I read through, this one is well documented and cited.

What you're implying might be true, might not be, but it looks like, according to what information I can find, your story's better off labelled as Propoganda. You're welcome to try to prove me wrong.

iTunes knows every mp3 track you have, and even knows how much you like them, if you've gone through the trouble of rating them...

Hell, it's even easier than that - who needs rating when iTunes automatically keeps track of how many times a track is played? Looking at my MP3 collection in play count order it's a pretty good reflection of what I like over time as opposed to a user set rating that's prone to the whims of the user.

  21. Re:Huh? Limited? on New Online Music Push by EMI · · Score: 1

The problem with using high-quality sound formats with .aa files is the space requirement - a one hour .aa file takes up about 14MB (it's all spoken word stuff - mono and not inherently complicated) - no big deal on a HD, but transferring large numbers of ripped files to an iPod seriously cuts down on your available space for music.

.aa (AudibleAudio) files are proprietary to audible.com. Not a bad company, really. Check 'em out.

  22. Re:Huh? Limited? on New Online Music Push by EMI · · Score: 1

ok, here's a guess: a .aa file is an mp3 variant, in that the data that is stripped from it to compress it is slightly different from the info lost in a real mp3, so that when a .aa file is encoded as .aiff and then re-ripped as a trueblood mp3 a good deal of signal is lost. Again, just a guess.

As to the pseudo-ripping, it's easier than that - on the mac side, there're programs (like Audio Hijack) that intercept sound from a specific application on its way to the audio controllers. Rather than pretending to rip a CD, simply boot up hijack, boot iTunes (or whatever), start recording and hit play. Couldn't be simpler - it's what I do, not to distribute mind you, but because the audible files I have consist of multiple artists and I'd like each hour program to be split into artist-by-artist tracks. Easier to find what I'm looking for that way.

YOu mean like an Audible (.aa) file? They're more open than most, I agree - I can transfer a .aa to my iPod or listen to it on my computer. I can Burn it to a CD, but only once. That sucks, a bit, but still - not much of a problem for hour long radio programs, but it'd suck just a bit for 3 minutes songs and mix CDs. What I can't do is transfer the file itself - the host computer needs to be enabled with your account # and password for it to work and you're only allowed a small number of computers to do that on.

Guess the bottom line is, we'll see.
