Or do the smart thing so you dont get caught unready next year, before you take your earnings and run take out 31% and mail a check to the IRS as a nearly payment. I already have.
I dont htink i've noticed this before but what just happened to the RedHat/sec thread that was posted after this one? Someone made Rob take it off or what? If you click on the redhat logo to get a list off all the redhat stories, it's not there either. Maybe I'm being overly paranoid. Moderate down at will. =P
This comment is what I have been trying to drive at ever since SGI started making its linux announcements. I want softimage and the like ported to linux. I want the high end graphics stuff. While a journaling filesystem is hella cool (even thought it wont be implemented in 2.4), I want to see a graphics market ported. this is a chance for more desktop attention. Don't bitch at me about blender and gimp either;) I love my gimp and my blender but not that many commercial shops are going to use blender right now because it means learning a whole new interface (sortof). I kinda wish blender did get more exposure though.
Well since I have to do exchange admin here,(i'mt the network admin for chrissakes, I can tell you that getting the web portion up is not as easy as your guy makes it sound. It also lacks some features that the outlook client has. The best option is what I do, run a vmware machine with minimal config and run outlook on it. Works for me just fine. I installed office on it too just cause I have to use it occasionally.
YOu can looked up a cached response of the ip addy on the MS nameservers at 131.107.1.7. Earlier in looking around I had noticed that this redirects to another box known as ntbeta.microsoft.com I think or what not. This is all old info I think though.
The interesting point that everyone keeps reitterating is that the site has been constantly down all day. I keep wondering what spin MS is going to put on this. They put out this box to be cracked, which cant even stay online. They use a non real world example by not running any services. The sad part is due to all the lame posts, they will attribute this to the opensource community in some way and attempt to make us look bad. And all this when I was just remarking that Bill Gates has done something good for once by donating some of his fortune to a really good charitable cause. *sigh*
Another thing that this may aloow is for linux users to see ports of some killer apps such as softimage, maya and others along those lines. This, in combination with the killer graphics speed of SGI hardware, would make linux a viable replacement for CG. Something else that might benifit is improvment of the tcp stack. MAny apps such as softimage and what not allow beowulf style rendering. This of course, is depending if the apps get ported.
One thing that I feel the need to mention is that RedHat is NOT an internet stock in the context of the others. Companies like mp3.com and what not don't actually OWN anything. They own a webpage in essence. RedHat has actual capital. They produce a product. I would never invest in a website. It is non tangible (sp). At least if redhat were to go under (doubtful), They would have something to actually sell off to get money back to the investors. Of course this may be total bs, but this was how I always percieved the "Internet" stocks.
I would point you back to my post in other threads but I'll recap it here.
According to what I've learned through all this via ETrade, the SEC and broker friends.
According to ETrade, They sit down with the customer (Redhat) and determine which criteria they want to use to evaluate potentials on. BAsically redhat says we want people who meet these criteria if possible. I dont think redhat realised that ETrade was going to be so restricting. Im trying to fight for redhat on this one because I was one of the lucky ones who got it all in the first place. If you really want some insight into this whole thing, check some of the previous posts in other threads. The thing i'm suprised aobut more is how quickly the internet and this community got things turned around. It still boggles my mind the true power here.
Thank you for your interest in participating in Red Hat's initial public offering. We are aware that you have recently not passed the online eligibility profile. Understandably, you are probably frustrated, especially if you feel you've entered a response in error.
We are required to determine whether a customer is suitable to participate in initial public offerings (IPOs), which are speculative in nature. Our online eligibility profile allows us to gather important information about your investment experience, goals and financial background, in order to determine your suitability in purchasing IPO shares.
If you feel you've entered your responses to the eligibility profile in error, please feel free to call us at 888-707-8680 and use the PIN 4263. One of our specially-appointed customer service associates will be happy to assist you in updating your profile.
I actually called back to etrade AFTER i got denied by the first broker. I made him explain in no uncertain terms what happened. He said Etrade sits down with the company before hand and determines which criteria it wants to allow people with. He said the SEC requires that they do the questionnaire but that there is no SEC ruling that requires certain responses to get in on an IPO. I'm still miffed about this. And now I come to find out they lost my cashiers check that was sent in and no funds are in my account. Be sure when they do get there I will open another account and answer the questionaire again and hope I answer the way they see fit. Then when everything is said and done...I transfer everything to datek because these etrade practices have caused me entirely to much grief.
Actually from what I've seen on IRc lately, the bots are offering alot of screeners in Active show Format. Of course it requires windows media player but you get a new flick in 2 seperate 200 meg portions. just small enough to burn on a cd with room to spare. Not that I've done this of course. The biggest thing is that with the highspeed accesses available now, 400 megs is nothing and there are plenty of underground irc networks that cater to the cable/adsl crowd.
The shop I work at actually gave time off once we completed a project we had last xmas. We had a project that was due before we left for new years holiday. As a result of iot being finished, we got 3 extra days off. I don't mind that at all.
Georgia has now given you the option of changing your driver's license number to something other than your SSN. I had it done when I got my license renewed last wyear.
I am one who is all for wiring the world and getting information into the hands of the people but I have serious problems with this. Several parts of this continent are without running water or food. Could not this money be used for something to help that first? Are we going to trample on the backs of these peoples in our quest to create a true global network? All Darwinism aside, have we thrown out all sense of humanity when we worry about a continent having internet access when the people there are starving and dying on a daily basis?
from Microsoft how? I am far from a fan of MS by any stretch but quite honestly how does this make this trinity different from the way Microsoft is now? Other than the fact that its 3 companies united via partnership. I'm far from a lawyer as well so does this still constitute the same business practices that MS is in trouble for right now?
I don't have any links thuis far on Van Eck phreaking/eavesdropping but I would suggest picking up a copy of Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. There is a rather lengthy discussion and example of one being setup in the books storyline. I don't know how accurate it is but basically by reading the waves given off by a computer monitor, with the right equipment, you can redraw the display elsewhere. Of course i could be totally wrong and it was all bullshit in the book but then again it IS fiction.
Something I noticed after reading through the slides from the Compaq/digital presentation to the Users group was that it was planning on using USB to interface to other machines. What this means to me is that a company like digital/compaq is working on USB support for linux which is something that is lacking right now. This is an exciting idea. I think the big picture here is that as a side result, certain things are going to be developed farther.
Oh and I just got back from RTP on a 4 week business trip. The area is pretty nice and it's doing it's best to cope with the sudden growth but I40 traffic STILL stinks;)
The title may be a little blunt but it says what I'm going to say. First of all I know exactly where Raster is coming from having left a job under similar conditions. I personally feel that his idea of posting the story out was tacky and a chance to get back at this manager who he disliked so much. I agree with his reasons for not liking the guy and he truly may have wanted to strike back without hurting redhat (as he has claimed) but this can only hurt RedHat as a company. Everyone keeps posting about how we should be interested because this displays RH's feelings towards its userbase. This is not entirely true. Notice that he said it was this one person. I hope that Bob Young will have a nice sitdown with said employee and give him a reality check. I have a feeling Bob doesn't quite agree with this fellows attitude. At least I hope so. As for raster, this can't be a good job move because I know how i look at employee's who do this and how MY boss viewed it when I told him my story. All he needs to do is list RH on his resume. He doesnt have to use them for a reference. Besides that, there are probably a few other people there he could list other than the manager who, quite frankly seems not to care. As a side note, I read the articles and what not regarding this and I don't think it merits even discussing because it should be a personal issue. Raster is unintentionally (or intentionally) blackballing RH and it kind of makes him sound like a child for the whole issue. It probably would have been better dealt with on the e-user listserv. None the less, this is the joy of slashdot and life in general. Free Speach. =)
Thankfully now that nvidia has released the drivers for linux, I dont have to go with a 3dfx product. This was a seriously grating issue at the time for me. I have a TNT card now. My problem was, do I sit with a tnt card and never have OGL or do I go with 3dfx and have good graphics but support a lame proprietary API? Sort of a catch 22 that I don't have to worry about now. Viva nvidia;)
Or do the smart thing so you dont get caught unready next year, before you take your earnings and run take out 31% and mail a check to the IRS as a nearly payment. I already have.
Damnit you beat me to my post. I've busy playing Redhat stock boy all day ;) First time I've read slashdot since I got up. hehehe
or better yet let me deviate off topic.

Now its going to freebsd.org. Who's gonna be first to redirect to a porn site? ;) hahahaha

I guess all the stink has made some minds change.

Something kind of petty that I found interesting was that I now have some images to go with what I read in Cryptonomicon.
I htink the issue with that was that Starbuck was glibc2 and RH6.0 was glibc2.1
