I mentioned that one a little higher up in the conv.
Meego could really become a killer OS if catered by the right people. And that OS would be easily a good platform to do dalvic emmulation (aka run andriod apps). The fact that it is open source means anyone with the right tools could just coast up and write a compatibility layer for any other os. So it really has good potential. The problem with meego though is exactly that strength. Open source scares the corporate world like mice do elephants. They just can understand it. So since HTC is looking for a competitive advantage in the OS world good luck explaining to them that a FOSS OS as a baseline is the right way...
From creating you own OS to getting to the point where it actually matters in the IT world is a tough job. HP found that out the hard way. Ok some might point out that Samsung would be able to create some sort of OS monoculture inside their ecosystems (mobile, living room, etc) , self promoting the underlying OS but still I wouldn't bet money on homegrown OSs success any more. The barrier of entry in the OS market is steep too much for any public company to graciously deal with.
IMO megacorps will bang their heads agains that wall for some years then concede that communal development is the only solution, create a nice open source OS infrastructure and standards (if not just adopt an existing one) and then mod the hell out of it to get the competing edge against their adversaries. I have been labeled as delusional from time to time though...
Polariod are actually still selling devices that can print their photos instantly. plus they do have a really hip printer that can print from your mobile phone over bluetooth while on battery.
why not go the atom route? You buy an atom mobo so you will get cpu+gpu in a heat efficient package. put a Thermalright HR-02 or a Prolimatech Megahalems or the 2kg copper one from thermalright:-P and you are set to go. The atoms that come with the top line mobos atm will give you a doual core quad thread system that should be able to deal with any emulation you throw at it plus a decent desktop env.
The new patent reform is just about beating the small guy. Nothing more nothing less. Companies that have R&D or exist purely of it patent every poop that comes out of their labs anyway. The only one person that can't do that is the weekend tinkerer who spends his free time actually inventing stuff. Some will try to counter this with "Well if he does make something patent worthy then he will patent" but the fact of the matter is that todays patents tend to be just vaguely modified rehashes of prior art, the amount of things that are really unique and new is irrelevantly small. Add to this the usual mentality of your average weekend invertor "Well, anybody would have thought of that" and the patent law ecosystem and you have one hell of a playground for the megacorps.
I'll see you in court for infringing on my patented "I'll see you in court" patent dispute resolution technique, My patented "Posting comments eponymous on slashdot" study and my patented "Having a smartass signature on slashdot" routine.
I wouldn't care if the articles were actually newsworthy.
What I got from the articles is that: Open source doesn't mean that corporations can always freely copy an open source project without talking with the FOSS project's management. But hey, that is actually a good thing, otherwise the big companies would just keep spewing out shamelessly copied versions of FOSS projects as their own. IMO the real value on FOSS is that you get the source code of the binaries you run. You can freely tinker with it as long as you keep private and if you really come up with something interesting you almost always will be able to publish after some to and fro with the original dev.
So, yes it licences stop big companies from ripping of FOSS. I like that I think.
I think 2012 is real but it won't matter, a world without cmdrTacko to dictate your info streams and Steve Jobs to dictate your buttons clearly isn't worth living in.
IIRC google really didn't pursue patent justice until the whole mobile computing patent wars started and reached it's door. So I don't think it actually is fanboism.
They are a company with big means, so they obviously want to dominate everything. Defending the people who distribute your products is part of that idea.
On another note: I don't actually use google very much for anything. So I might be wrong
Bill Gates: "Im gonna patent entertainment!!!" Steve Ballmer: "I made moar $dollars" Melinda Gates: "Honey those chldren in africa don't know how to read! " George Lukas: "These are not the patents you are looking for" Bill Gates: "Ohh look a butterfly..."
Yes, they really have to move away from the 32nm process fast. Is the 6200 16 physical cores or just 8 dualthreaded ones? If the cores are physical I can see dual opteron boards become a must for renderfarms/supercomputers and why not virtualization aswell.

Here's one ludicrous idea:
"HEY HTC! Why not invest in the brilliant OS that is meego"
You are right cars are not bloated for the reasons You mention.
But if you would replace the driver airbag in a car with a shotgun I bet you everybody would all of a sudden drive like a responsible person ;-)
... a fresh install of Windows Server ...
... When handling $500,000 worth of data ...
???
I really want them to remake Carmageddon!
Powersliding a caterpillar truck into a pedestrian bridge
hell yeah!
Why? I did some lovely garment renderings in 3dsmax design 2012 late last night!

I remember a time when cellphones looked like bricks.
If in the future our processors will look like bricks what will our cellphones look like?
You really aren't familiar with capitalism are you?

That nokia deal is in the same vein as "embrace/extend/extinguish" so you have heard it. You just chose to ignore it's existence.
