I don't know about the Kinect 2, but the old version can't just use the power from a USB port because it needs to feed a silly motor. When it comes to priorities I think portability comes first.
I recently bought a second-hand Kinect 1 to use it in my robotics pet projects and it looked very promising (see OpenKinect and OpenCV). Why can't MS kill Windows 10 instead?
You mean, like getting out Mom's basement are interacting with real people? Wow, that sounds complicated:)
On a serious note, Happy Birthday Slashdot! I've been around like 13 years now, and all I have to say is thank you, fellow slashdotters. Thank you for all these well-spent hours. I've learned a lot from you, and I've tried to give something in return every time I could.
Are you aware that most of the things you use daily are made of materials mined somewhere (and in all likelihood, in poorly regulated third-world countries)?. Mining is not bad in itself, and Canada is surely not the worst place in terms of regulation.
Probably not taking a job in the mining industry lets you sleep at night, but, in fact, you are fooling yourself.
And Glassfish, the Java EE application server inherited from Sun and supported by Oracle, seems to be doomed to oblivion. Happily, the project was forked.
Not only companies. Family and friends usually leak a lot of information about you. Either tagging you on FB, uploading private photos to "the cloud" or installing stupid apps on their phones that steal their contacts and IM messages. There's no escape.
There are really good modern old-school games made by indie developers/studios. The Humble Bundle is a good way to start. Here is a somewhat outdated list of bundles. Many of those games can be bought on Steam too.
The thing is that sanctions hardly change anything. The sanctioned countries radicalize even more and hatred grows within the population because many end up thinking that the US is to blame for their poverty (which might or not be true). I don't have a solution for this problem, but perhaps it all starts calling them "rogue" just because they have a different mindset. I don't think Iran will start nuking everyone else just because they have nuclear power. Cuba is not going to invade other countries. North Korea would bomb Seoul back to the stone age with or without sanctions if they were to do it. This is more a "legalize it" kind of debate, I think.
The problem with Venezuela (one of them, at least) is a funny combination of populism and ignorance. The drop in oil prices is marginal compared to the political mess they're into. I don't need a podcast to tell me that, I live next door to them.
What are you talking about? The crisis in Venezuela barely has something to do with oil. Besides, Venezuela is full of natural resources and food, the Middle East is basically a desert.
Sure. Use the conventional KDE3 network manager.
For the old-school KDE lovers, Q4OS is a very good option.

The crew has at least two gay characters if that helps. The writers were sooo high when they turned Star Trek into this train wreck.

Let's face it, this had to happen eventually: Millennial slashdotters. Wait until they discover that you can listen to music without internet.
Not only that, in the [near] future they could create a 3D model based on your submissions and offer VR sessions. Creepy :P
One of the perks of using the Linux client is that we don't even have decent support for plain chats, so we won't be seeing Cortana in a while.
+1 Been there, done that
They already did. It's called Diameter

You clearly know nothing about "disruptive innovation". And even less about hipsters.

I read "Canada", and I was about to agree!
So she found your 1994 porn stash?
Now you understand why God is so pissed.
Brought to you by the guys who bombed the crap out of civilians in Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, ...
That one is easy. Just put Mars behind the asteroid belt and make the Martians pay for it!

I didn't know what XHamster is, so I visited its Wikipedia page and... Oh, wait.
