An 'evolving stance'? Isn't that the same damn thing as 'straddling the fence' or 'flip-flopping'? When HASN'T a politician had an 'evolving stance'? Listen to any of them talk at different locations and they contridcut themselves more often than not.

Each of these morons is nothing more than the puppet of their respective parties. Neither one is a LEADER in any respect. Although, I give the nod to McCain simply based on the fact that the man fought in a war as a fighter pilot. Obama? What the hell has he done? He's first term Sneator and thinks he can run for President?

Help us all if they are the best we have to offer.

Get rid of redundant redundancy. Stop having 12 guys work on the Start menu. And you wonder why their products are so bloody crappy now. Will they ever learn?

Let's start with programming on 2 cores and then maybe go to 4 or more. For now, the kind of stuff Intel is discussing is moot. How is my 17 year old daughter going to know that the answer the calculator gives is correct? Does she just assume? Do you remember the math bugs in Excel? In the early Pentium processors?

MySQL was my default choice for DB on *nix systems, it worked great and was pretty easy to maintain. Now that Sun owns it, and plans on destroying it with closing off the source (and the backup code, etc, is ONLY THE BEGINNING, I assure you) I'll have to go elsewhere. PostgresQL, here I come.

  16. My $0.02 on What Skills Should Undergrads Have? · · Score: 1

While you can get a good overview of the languages/tools you will use in the real world (what's that?) It seems to me that only by getting a job out here in said world will you really get the skills you need. Tinker all you want, every little bit helps, but very little I learned as an undergrad really prepared me for the corporate world. The whole 'college teaches theory, not application' is pretty accurate in my opinion. College (and school in general) tends to have a curriculum that's a mile wide and an inch deep. Lots of subjects covering very little in depth. I certainly think you should go with what you enjoy the most, not where the money is. I've found I'm a much happier person in a job I like making less money than getting 6 figures thrown at me and hating the job. If you don't enjoy what you are doing, none of your skills will matter much, as you'll be less interested in really using them.

My biggest 'wish list' item for undergrads, especially in an IT related field, is a little more concentration on public speaking and people skills. Being a geek really is its own culture, but that doesn't mean you have to be a social retard. I've seen many a great coder fired for lack of tact/ability to dress properly. I think this is becoming a little less of an issue, but that's still one of my pet peeves.

College can only get you so prepared for ANY field, the rest is a trial by fire. Be confident in what you DO know. Just out of school, don't oversell yourself to prospective employers, and you should be just fine.

I don't do the whole barcode thing, mainly because I don't loan my books out, but I do use Tellico for my book database and it works great for the books with ISBN numbers. Since a good portion of my volumes are pre-1960s (I think that's when they started using ISBN) I had to manually enter a lot of mine in. It took a while, but I don't have any issues with it after getting them in there.

  25. The Porn Nazi approach on How To Configure Real PC Parental Controls? · · Score: 1

I monitor every move my kids make online using squid and log analyzers for various things. I also deny connections to everything but SPECIFIC websites that must have my OK before added to the list. Granted it can be a giant pain in the butt to add in subdomains to sites if needed, but this is far preferable to my 8 year old stumbling across anything she shouldn't. I also think putting the system in a place easily viewable is a help, but even for my teenage daughters, synergy is great for viewing their desktops at any time. Which I frequently do while I'm working, I'll have their desktops on a separate display and they know it.

But nothing overcomes good parenting. Sadly, the good parents (and I like to think I am one) have kids well behaved enough to know not to go looking for it, but they are usually the ones who put those controls in place. It's the crappy, loser parents who don't and then bitch and moan about all the stuff on the web, or that their kid gets snatched by some predator on MySpace. With well raised kids, the THREAT of being monitored is just about enough. But even I'm not stupid enough to think my kids are perfect. I make sure they know the risks and the threats out there, I cant shield them completely, that's insane, they have to know the whole story, not just hover over them at all times thinking that if I hide them from it, it will never happen to them.

So, I have to be a Nazi about what they see. Just in case.
