I used to run prior to buying my Garmin 305, and I even ran a 10k with decent timing, after deciding last year to leave the couch behind. I had a myriad of foot related injuries and at one point my sports med pretty much told me that all lower extremities will require replacement. I hope he was joking. But the fact was I had no clue as to how I was pushing myself. Even the course around my house I knew as if the back of my hand, I didnt know whether I was doing better one day vs the previous, whether I am pushing myself too hard, how far I was running etc. I would drive my car around the course usually, If I ran different to calculate the mileage, but that became a hassle (found out later that there are other ways such as Mapmyrun which overlays google maps etc.)
My two bit advice to you would be dont buy a gps training device (which is what it is) unless you were training for something. And something bigger than a 5k or a 10k. If you just started running, then run for the fun of it and when you have got that in your blood, get a training device, when you are ready to step up to the next level. A gps device the first time you start running would overwhelm you with all the data (and Garmin 305 buries you with it, and I love it!). You need all the data when you are ready to make sense with it. Initially, you should smell the crisp air outside (or the smog), feel your heart pounding inside the ribcage, see the next hill as you race towards it and its more gratifying than a lot other things, like reaching for the next bag of chips.
A Garmin 305 with its heart monitor will give you tons of data. It will poll your position every 3 seconds, and you can use a tool like SportTracks to overlay that on google maps or Google Earth to see what you burned through. Garmin has its own training tool, like Garmin Connect, which previously sucked, but now is much better. Still I would like to direct you at Sport Tracks as its free and gives you a cumulative representation of your training than other tools. There is nothing better than seeing a month worth of data and see that you have ran 100 miles in the last one month, which days you ran, what your average pace were, your splits/laps. And oh..and graphs, more and more graphs. You can also track as to what parts of the course you were running fast vs slow, your heartbeat zones and the areas of the course where you were about to pop so that you can be better prepared etc. The Garmin 305 does a piss poor job at calculating the calories burned, as it computes it based on the distance covered, not on your heart beat which is a better route. But as long as you burn more than you take in, even if its a rough figure, you would lose weight gradually.
Sure, you dont need Garmin 305 (which is rather bulky, but once its on your hand you dont feel its there) or any other training devices unless you are prepared to take your training to the next level. I am running a half marathon in November and I am treating my training just as I would treat anything else thats important in my life. I have a goal of a set number of hours:minutes before I cross the line and I am not ready to leave that to speculation. I train because I want to be injury free and better prepared. And thats what I have my Garmin. YMMV.
What I simply do not understand is a community who has embraced technology, who have a first hand view of how the world is evolving around us, how technology is driving that change, can be so blind towards the ills of protectionism. They are eager to embrace ideas from around the globe, irrespective of where it originated, except when an Organization has to make a choice between hiring locally or globally.
I liken this to how the Cobol or Legacy programmers felt when new technologies came calling.
here who is complaining about lost jobs due to H1-B and corporate fatcats are actually volunteering at soup kitchens, volunteering their time at networking events for people out of work, helping the unemployed get their financial priorities in order as well as help them stay motivated in their search for new jobs?
Seriously, how many of you, CITIZENS of this country, instead of clamouring for the Govt, the Senators and the Congressmen to do the 'right thing', are willing to spend their time and efforts helping the truly disadvantaged better their lives?
Yes, that will teach them!!! Err.. wait, who are we punishing again? The employers who will merely outsource the whole division or to the families of those H1-Bs who just got laid off. Or do we care?
The concept of a global workforce is not one that goes away as the global economic tail winds shift. Regardless of whether politicians all of a sudden grow a conscience or not.
I am on an H1-B. I have been here for the last 9 years, and though I have seen poverty that is far more dire than that around me currently, I am not insulated against what goes on around the country. People who were paid 50k before are pizza delivery guys now, the shame that comes with the inability to afford the basic necessities for your kids, plays all across communities around the country.
But how do you ever plan to make all of them right, by getting rid of all the immigrant families here now?
If you are worried that he changed the content on his site, removing vast swaths of what he promised before, in order to defend going back on his initial positions, once he become president..do you really think he would care what was said on the campaign website if he was planning to flip positions later?
Presidential campaigns are like incremental releases of a software product. You get slightly better features but nothing revolutionary. Sales and Marketing usually prevents that so that people are back in line when the next release is out.
I am sorry, but someone has to ask. If you had told me that this happened five six years ago, I would be ecstatic, as this would have proven to be a worthy deterrent to Microsoft's DirectX, which was lagging behind OpenGL adoption.
But with DirectX with what 90% of the market(?), I fear its too little, too late. SGI, though one of the icons of the past, has had to suffer from people at the top in late 90s who had really not much vision as to how the PC world was going to pan out over the next few years and was really caught unaware when OpenGL went the way of the doodoo.
But hey, SGI was still the only place then who had Aeron chairs (this from a friend of mine who was gracious enough to invite me to their awesome lunch cafe).
For all the people here, how would you start behaving the day after the first series of bomb blasts if they were to go off in major cities around US? How would your perspectives change, after the fiftieth one, and consider for a minute that the Govt is helpless to prevent it, that every other week there is one more idiot blowing up innocents. What would you do? Its easy to be far removed from all this ugliness and have an opinion.
I am not saying what they propose to ban Open networks to be valid. What I am saying is, seven years in to the stark reality posed by the threat of Islamic terrorism, I am surprised that India hasnt opted to carpet bomb Pakistan occupied Kashmir.
Honor killings as you have read recently about in the media, did not happen in the same country. But then by the same logic and generalization, I guess you dont have a clue.
Whether you like it or not, the technology exists. I dont agree with brain scan being solely used as evidence for committing the crime, but its a secondary tool nonetheless. Just like any other technology, now that its available, society has to make sense of how best to use it.
Best Game.. Ever!!!! Come on y'all.. dont you remember Daikatana??!!

Anyway, been here a guest since 1999, and a member for the last seven. Enjoyed being part of this community, every single day (or when its non-xenophobic).
My 10 year old nephew started kicking my arse in Halo around three years ago when I got my xbox. My seven year old nephew started around two years ago doing the same (but albeit in a lesser amount of frags) on Halo and Halo 2 as well. They love coming over to my place during the vacation, and understandably my sister and my brother in law dont enjoy it as much:)
The 10 year old does kick all of our collective asses on pretty much any game we tend to play. Its no wonder I rarely play online, I am humiliated just enough at home.
On the other hand, another one of my nephews never really caught on to gaming despite having a Gameboy which sits alone, that is till he found a Wii.
Pedophiles in particular and Sex Offenders in General have the highest rate of recidivism (relapse).
And yes I would be happier that they stay in prison than be anywhere near to our kids.
This is really not about one's online rights. Its about the rights of a person who has left that choice to the courts the moment they made a decision to become a sex predator.
Infact, Virginia will pass a legislation (or has passed already) that will do the same thing and the state SOR will need to be updated so that "Email / IM and other Communication Names" will need to be registered with law enforcement and specifically through SOR.
What this enables law enforcement to do is if they do come across a perp using another scree name, email whatever that is not registered with law enforcement, they have all the reason to charge him, for violation. And believe me, they wont have much of a leg to stand on, owing to how easy it will be to inform law enforcement on a change of IM/email ids.
I am ok with scum like these enjoying a subset of our rights as a result of this. And I am sure a lot of people are, as well.
I dont think anyone has claimed that the Communist Party is against education in Kerala. Public Education is dirt cheap (I am not sure if its mandatory) and society as such played a big role in making sure kids were in school during the day.
The Communist Govt put forth night schools for Seniors so as to increase literacy across the state, as a result of which we hit 100% literacy rate.
Even though the color of the flag is red and they adopt the name Communists, they are far from it. And atleast a little bit of why this measure suddenly took off has to do with the Communist Party wanting to align itself to the more conservative communist ideals than what West Bengal (another Communist state) has done, which is to embrace more private investment.
But I am glad to find my state laying out the red carpet for FOSS.
I am not sure if the price of the iPhone was mentioned during the Keynote.
At 499/- it will have to be subsidized heavily by the carrier before it will get widely adopted.
And whats with the "pay me $100 and I will give you 4 Gigs extra"? Isnt it better to wave a few more carrots along with that $599 pricetag so that people would want to line up?
My Good Lord, I almost relived "War of the Worlds" where people start killing each other for a spot on a Van.
I got there around 5:45 and the crowd was already over a 1000, snaking along the road for half a mile. It got worse as it got near to 7:00 when the gates were supposed to open. There were hardly 4 law enforcement officers near the gate and even they were hardly prepared for the onslaught at 7:00. More over, even after having over a month to prepare, there was hardly any planning. They could have let people in to the Raceway which had a huge parking lot and used barricades to create a maze like queue. I am positive people would have respected that, but they made people wait in unmanaged queues outside the gate. They could have opened just one gate, and let people trickle in. Instead they opened two gates, one wide enough for cars waiting outside to enter (which they did plus hundreds waiting to pounce) plus they flung open the gates where people were waiting and you bear witness to what ensued by looking at the slideshows on Times dispatch. People ran like as if a pack of hellhounds were at their heels and in less than 30 seconds a "queue" (if you can call it that) formed outside the entrance to the facility which was more like 10 queues side by side.
People were fainting all around us, fire department did what they could. Swat team in riot gear assembled towards the back of the facility, willing to step in to do what they can if things get more worse. There were still less than 10 law enforcement officers in regular attire trying to manage the crowd. People were unruly, cussing and dropping like flies around us as the heat picked up.
Towards 9:30, authorities realized they need a plan and put together some barricades and started channeling people inside the facility. It was another 3 hours before I got in and got my hands on one. I am sure Steve jobs will be licking his lips in anticipation of 1000 odd users foraging through his stores..
Anyway, this was an event that went to hell in a handbasket in 10 seconds straight. Due to bad planning or lack of it, something that could have been organized to the point where the whole thing should have lasted a couple of hours, it turned out in to a free for all, where people, regardless of their social status put a lid on their conscience and returned to more basic instincts.

Last I checked, this is the overall tally
Number of lives lost in Scandinavia due to Terrorism: 0
Number of lives lost in India due to Terrorism: Atleast 635 people killed in Terrorism since 2001 (I think in reality its far more..)

A 40 Gig HD can hold roughly around 10 hours worth of 1080i.
Thats sparse. I hope they come up with something better later, especially when HD prices are still falling.
