I posted this article, Have you ever tried to sell a diamond in the previous discussion on diamonds. It is a thourough history on the DeBeers cartel and how they created the myth that "A diamond is forever". It should be required reading for any young man about to be duped into blowing a big wad on a "cheap" rock.
This lengthy article gives a fascinating history into how the DeBeers cartel has created artificial scarcity in the diamond market and convinced the western world that a "Diamond is Forever". Before the 19th century, no one ever had to spend 6 weeks salary on an engagement ring!
This reminds me of a guy I saw at a street fair is some town with a 'Virtual Reality' Wheelchar. He put a VR helmet on your head and covered it with a black sack, cranked up the soundtrack so the entire street could hear it, and using the handles of the wheel chair, simulated the motion you would be experiencing during the movie - ala Star Tours.
Very clever of him, but I wasn't about to spend $10 and let this guy put a sack over my head.
Ever since I checked 'Do not load remote images in Mail & Newsgroup settings' I haven't even seen an image in my email messages. This is in fact THE reason I switched from Outlook in the first place.
That is exactly why I love my cheap little Okidata 8Z LED printer. Laser quality and the little rubber cap easily comes off to dump in some cheap toner.
This was in the "Washington Post" . . . the title of the article was "Best Comeback Line Ever."
Police arrested Patrick Lawrence, a 22-year-old white male, resident of Dacula, GA, in a pumpkin patch at 11:38 p.m. Friday. Lawrence will be charged with lewd and lascivious behavior, public indecency, and public intoxication
at the Gwinnett County courthouse on Monday.
The suspect allegedly stated that as he was passing a pumpkin patch, he decided to stop.
"You know, a pumpkin is soft and squishy inside, and there was no one around here for miles. At least I thought there wasn't," he stated in a phone interview from the jail.
Lawrence went on to state that he pulled over to the side of the road, picked out a pumpkin that he felt was appropriate to his purposes, cut a hole in it, and proceeded to satisfy his alleged "need."
"I guess I was just really into it, you know?" he commented with evident embarrassment.
In the process, Lawrence apparently failed to notice the Gwinnett County police car approaching and was unaware of his audience until officer Brenda Taylor approached him.
"It was an unusual situation, that's for sure," said officer Taylor. "I walked up to (Lawrence) and he's . . . just working away at this pumpkin."
Taylor went on to describe what happened when she approached Lawrence.
"I just went up and said, 'Excuse me sir, but do you realize that you are screwing a pumpkin?'
He got real surprised, as you'd expect, and then looked me straight in the face and said, "A pumpkin? Damn...is it midnight already?"
October 23, 2001 - Today, Microsoft has applied for $4.2 Billion dollars in federal aid money. They fear a substantial drop in revenue caused by people switching from IIS to Apache to ward off 'terrorist' attacks.
Bill Gates was quoted as saying there are no definite plans to actually apply the money to fixing the security holes.
If the devices does indeed work by playing back the SIT, it would still require the company dialing your number to proactively remove the number from their database. Unfortunately for us, it is much cheaper to keep dialing a the number and getting the "this number is no longer in service message" because those calls cost the company nothing in toll charges. The administrative overhead involved with removing the number from the database is more than the opportunity cost of leaving the number in the list to be dialed again.
I have spent the last four years of my life implementing the dialing systems that instead of bothering you with an operator during dinner, hung up on you because our only goal was to leave spam on your answering machine! This device will do little to prevent "Voice Broadcasting" as it is called.
And bin Laden is a surprisingly agile enemy. He not only grasps America's most vulnerable points, he understands "spinning," using video-imagery and satellite transmission to get his side of the story out. This is something Saddam never began to grasp.
Please tell me I am not the only one disturbed by the fact that the world media is all to willing spread his propaganda by the endless repetitions of his 'recruitment' videos.
I know that we do need to understand our enemy and it was newsworthy that he spoke out concerning the attacks. On the other hand, I fear that more sympathy will be aroused for his cause and the net effect will be a negative one.

Here is a convincing article as to how the US involvement in WWI ultimately helped to lay the foundation for the current political climate we find ourselves in.
The basic premise is, had not the US intervened in Europe, the Germans would not have been so thoroughly punished setting the stage for a Hitler. No Holocaust. No 'moral-imperative' for the world to support the formation of the state of Israel. No current US support of Israel.. well read it for yourself. Something to think about.

I everything produced by Microsoft was crap anyway. Why try and duplicate in on Linux?
Gates: Someone write a memo, employees are no longer allowed to drive Fords. They must switch to BMW.
Suit: Sir, remember that town in Germany that switched to Linux?
Gates: Volvo's then.
Suit: Sir, Sweeden is a socialist country, no doubt they'll be next.
Gates: Lexus then damnit!
Suit: Sir, those aisian countries are developing their own operating system.
Gates: That's it. Transfer all money budgeted for OS R&D into forming a new car company. Hell, we won't even have to change our slogan.

I already have the ability to view two narrow 'windows' on my screen right now and I don't even have to run XP.
