Perhaps we should scrap those antiquated rules... after all, we don't provide hitching posts and water troughs outside public buildings anymore, do we?
At an rate of 1% of subscribers taking "advantage" of this deal once a year, that's an additional $14.3 million per year in gross revenue for Comcast. That adds a measly 0.07% to their total of $21.3 billion in revenues. Probably not worth the cost of setting up the infrastructure to support this program.
I'm sure they're predicting a much higher response rate, but I'll bet they're sadly mistaken.
The challenge (whether you're looking for a job, or a new software company looking for contracts) is getting others interested in you (getting them to recognize that your talents are *just the thing* they need...). That's a marketing problem.
The biggest benefit I see to forming a software company is -- Division of Labor (one of the foundations of civilization itself). A group of engineers can band together and support a marketing person who can find (and close on) work for them.
The moderation system (esp. in its current form - moderation by +karma/.ers) will always be better than automated filtering.
The key problem is adaptation. "Bayesian filtering is better than simple keyword filtering, but its performance will degrade over time unless its rules are continuously updated (via analysis of new data). And there's the problem that a troll in one story context may be an insightful comment in another.
Moderation by humans apapts rapidly, accomodates a variety of contexts, and will reflect (and grow with) the overall/. "culture".
Positive feedback is such an important - yet far too often overlooked - motivator. This is the one greatest lesson I've taken from my boss; in the midst of the most stressful silly-season, he never forgets to provide (well-deserved only) praise.
Reviewing/. postings provides ample evidence of how much easier it is to criticize than to praise...
This should be an example to all of us who use Open Source software -- share your appreciation as far and wide and often as possible.
Fox news were the only ones showing this footage over and over. It showed a bunch of 10-year old boys "celebrating", egged on by one or two adults.
This was on ONE street corner somewhere in the west bank.
From this, reactionary commentators have erroniously concluded that many Palestinians are happy that a blow has been struck at America.
Let's not feed racist hysteria.

Who the hell moderated this one up? It's WAY off-topic!
I would think that their first target would be porting the Windows Scripting Host and Outlook.
Think of all those poor Lunix users who have been left out in the cold every time a new virus appears. Now they, too will be able to gripe with the MicroSurfs around the water cooler...
really... I don't think I've ever seen a more misleading headline.
Really, really lame, guys.

Bravo!
When can we expect a vi editor for this environment? ('cause everbody knows its not complete until it supports vi...)
I think I'll get a copy of Vista and NOT use it ...they need those datapoints, too.

Theory X was controversial, but turned out to be true.
Theory Y is controversial, therefore theory Y is true.
Gimme a break.

but then again, they *are* spammers...
Nice idea, but it never happened... i defy you to find a usable fax number on any of the junk faxes you receive.
:)
Another story in a similar vein is slapping those business-reply-by-mail envelopes on a brick -- recepient pays ALL necessary postage.
AIX still exists? Why?

_I_ am glad I just rented my cable modem -- if they go under, at least I can enjoy holding an (alebit small) asset hostage...
