At an rate of 1% of subscribers taking "advantage" of this deal once a year, that's an additional $14.3 million per year in gross revenue for Comcast. That adds a measly 0.07% to their total of $21.3 billion in revenues. Probably not worth the cost of setting up the infrastructure to support this program.

I'm sure they're predicting a much higher response rate, but I'll bet they're sadly mistaken.

  15. Wanted: Marketing Department on Unemployed? Why Not Start a Software Company? · · Score: 1

The challenge (whether you're looking for a job, or a new software company looking for contracts) is getting others interested in you (getting them to recognize that your talents are *just the thing* they need...). That's a marketing problem.

The biggest benefit I see to forming a software company is -- Division of Labor (one of the foundations of civilization itself). A group of engineers can band together and support a marketing person who can find (and close on) work for them.

I'm ready to give it a go...

  16. Re:Yes, we must filter out the dummies on Bayesian Filtering For Dummies · · Score: 5, Interesting

The moderation system (esp. in its current form - moderation by +karma /.ers) will always be better than automated filtering.

The key problem is adaptation. "Bayesian filtering is better than simple keyword filtering, but its performance will degrade over time unless its rules are continuously updated (via analysis of new data). And there's the problem that a troll in one story context may be an insightful comment in another.

Moderation by humans apapts rapidly, accomodates a variety of contexts, and will reflect (and grow with) the overall /. "culture".

  17. Right On! on Thanksgiving Comes Early To Gnome Project · · Score: 3, Insightful

Positive feedback is such an important - yet far too often overlooked - motivator. This is the one greatest lesson I've taken from my boss; in the midst of the most stressful silly-season, he never forgets to provide (well-deserved only) praise.

Reviewing /. postings provides ample evidence of how much easier it is to criticize than to praise...

This should be an example to all of us who use Open Source software -- share your appreciation as far and wide and often as possible.
