I went to Sonoma State, where Professor Carl Jensen teachers. I met him a few times. I have a few friends were attendend his class. Pathetically enough, "Project Censored" is probably SSU's greatest claim to fame - so I heard about it, a lot, while I was there.
The idea is that real news is being "censored" in favor of "junk-food news." But not censored in the ordinary definition of the word, but rather by Dr. Jensen's very own definition which is: "repression of information for *any* reason."
When Dr. Jensen says "censored" he means: "under-reported, in his opinion." Dr. Jensen claims to be opposed to sensationalism in the media. But isn't Dr. Jensen actually using the same tactics?
Scox is not only suing, scox is being sued. Unlike scox's BS suit, the lawsuits against scox are very real, and very substantial. If we buy scox, we inherent the lawsuits.
Scox's exit strategy is to go bankrupt, and go out of business. Then the scox execs move on to the next scam. And msft finds a new bitch - like novell.
They say outragous stuff because that makes you read their articles. The more hits on the site, the more they can charge advertisers.
Many of the people interviewed clearly have an agenda: why ask an as/400 recruiter about the need for PC networks? And why are big publishers, like ziff-davis, so totally biased towards big advertisers, like msft?
Bottom line: what do these so-called jornalists know? They don't work in information tech.
The techniques used by the pop-media are no different than the techniques used by 13 snot-nosed punk trollers. The pop-media pros are just more polished.
IMO: those who think otherwise don't understand the case.
This scam is now in it's 5th year, and that is the point of the scam. The idea is not win in a final judgement, the point is to keep the scam alive. As long as these cases continue: scox, msft, and bsf, keep winning.
Before the scam, scox had a market cap under $10, about half what it is now. The mcbride boys, darl and kevin, are each taking in about $250K - $300K a year, which is not bad for small-time Utah scammers. BSF has raked in, at least, $30M. For msft, the cost of this fud doesn't amount to pocket change.
The scam was yet another smart move by msft. Msft may not be fooling anybody here, but it's the PHBs that matter. The PHBs must believe that Linux is a legal mine-field.
So gloat all you want, but the bad guys are laughing up their sleeves.
Assembly language is one of those things that you use when have no other choice. And when you really program down to the bare metal, there is no other choice.
Even C will never fully replace assemble language. If assembler language were replacable, it would have been replaced decades ago.
> . . for many years Microsoft's tagline was "a PC on every desktop and in every home."
Wasn't that Apple's idea? As I understand it, that's why they called the company "Apple" - it was supposed to be something every kid should have on his/her desk.
Honerably discharged from the USAF, put myself though eight years of college, stayed absolutely 100% squeaky clean, got a top-secret clearance. Worked for less than minimum wage just to get experience. Always tried to do a good job, never hurt anybody. Invested in my home, and my country. Never voted republican.
Yet I am *constantly* told that I am such an awful person. My race owned slaves! (what race didn't?). My gender, race, and country, are all evil - they must be evil because they were successful. Lord knows, nobody in China, Russia, or South America was ever evil. Right?
For example, some Americans think this is all the fault of the Repubs. It isn't. Go ahead and vote the repubs out of office, it won't make any difference - it never has.
Clinton sold out to China, and didn't do anything to stop illegal immigration. And it was the repubs who dragged the dems - kicking and screaming - into a balanced budget.
I wish this was simple as voting the repubs out of office, I'd be the first in line. BTW: I never voted repub in my life.
IMO: IBM is not looking to replace older workers with younger, but all workers with offshore labor.
But yes, they will run the articles about the horrible shortage of IT workers. That is part of lobbying congress to allow more H1B. They need H1Bs because they need local people to speak Russian, Hindi, or Portuguese, to their real workforce.
And besides, why not run those articles? Can't hurt.
I thought "calorie restriction" study was debunked

As I understand it, those studies were done on rats. If you let a rat eat all it wants, the rat eat itelf to death in a very short time. That's where they got this calorie restriction idea.
Thing is, rats that have a normal diet live as long as rats that have calorie restricted diet.
When I was enlisted in the USAF (79 - 83), there were times that we were instructed not to speak to the press. Also, I believe that Hunter Thompson was discharged from the USAF because he writing for other publications without USAF approval.
Microsoft arranged funding the scox-scox. We are learning - 3 years later - that msft was not successful in this particular censorship endeavor, but how many times has msft been sucessful in controlling information which might not be beneficial to msft?
Also, remember: before the scam, scox was a linux company. Why would scox mind if ibm were improving linux? The company that funded the scam - the puppet-master - however, has a big problem with ibm, or anybody, improving linux.
"managers hand out promotions like candy to a degree holder"
Not from what I've seen in my 27 years of professional experience in IT.
I have a friend who started out in IT the time as I did. He never even graduated high-school, I went on to complete 8 years of post-secondary education, completing a degree in business, and a degree in math with a concentration in comp. sci. Then I took enough extra units for a degree in comp. sci. and completed graduate work in project management, and about half a dozen certs. And I worked in IT while I completed my education.
My friend earns twice as much as I do. While I was wasting my time, effort, and money, on formal educatiion - which is useless for IT - my friend could concentrate on getting valuable experience. For me, trying to study, and work, made both suffer.
Look at the job boards - they want experience in several specializations, they don't care about formal education.
I have worked in a lot of places, I have never seen "managers hand out promotions like candy to a degree holder." Usually, I see degree and non-degree working shoulder to shoulder, getting the same pay. Only the guy with degree is older, and poorer - if he had to put himself though.

For example, the author makes statements like: "Clearly a GPL license is a plus for many, but for some environments, GPL'd software is a non-starter."
He does absolutely nothing what-so-ever to back those statements up. Why is a GPL a "non-starter" for "some" environments? What environments?
And the entire article is like that. A series of assertions with no reasons behind them.
I believe good arguments could be made for, and against, MySQL. But, you won't find those arguements here. Just a series of unqualified assertions.

I agree with everything else on your list.

Qwest is POTS. Comcast uses a dedicated line for telephone - not like Vonage.
You know, these $99-if-you-buy-all-three deals? If you're going to pay $80+ for TV and HSI, why not get landline for another $20?
What exactly has msft "detailed" ? I don't see where msft has specified one single patent infringment.
I'm sure this guy makes more money in one year than I'll make in my life - and he's an idiot. Ask msft how well "WGA" worked.
So why do stupid people get all the premium jobs? Is there anybody here who think's s/he is dumber than the president of the USA?
Why should a young child have to lug those heavy books around? Why waste the paper?
It will be helpful if the people who manage the overseas projects are familiar with the language and culture of the offshore workforce.

Serious question for developers. Is .NET worth being tied to msft?

Every read anything by Dan Lyons? For example, Danny writes the most insanely over-the-top articles in praise of the msft backed scox-scam.
To Forbes, Microsoft infalibility is a law of physics. And there is always something terribly wrong with any msft competitor.
I would be more impressed if were somebody at a suppervisory level, speaking off the record. All you will get from zdnet HR piece is stupid hype.
With the ODF puggin you can also show microsoft who's boss. Especially when used with earlier versions of MS-Office.

You gotta be kidding. Anybody would take such an article seriously would have to very ignorant about open source, and have a poor sense of logic.
