Note: I did not say unionize. Doctors are organized though the AMA. Lawyers are organized.
Of course big companies are going to screw the techies, why they shouldn't they? They have all the power, and techies are busy back-stabbing each other.
Boston College threatens disciplinary action against students distributing condoms Boston College officials are threatening to take disciplinary measures against a group of students who are distributing condoms out of their dorm rooms, calling the act a violation of the university's mission as a Catholic and Jesuit institution
Since when is BC a religioius institution? In a secular government: should taxpayers be forced to fund a religious institution?
The is very similar to an article published in Forbes.
Maybe I'm missing something. Only Google, and Chrome, are mentioned in the title, but wouldn’t the same risks apply to any OS and/or browser?
From Forbes:
New Google Chrome Spell Checker Monitors Everything You Type, While FBI Secretly Watches Now that both Google and Microsoft have admitted it. You can probably assume every other major cloud service provider is getting these National Security Letters as well. So the question is; How comfortable are you with the possibility that everything you type might be monitored?
I was a huge google fan, got several google certifications.
But the parent post is correct. Google drops popular apps all the time. It's hard to commit a lot of time and effort to a google app, just to have google pull the rug out from under you.
Also, google makes practically all of it's income from advertising. Anything else, google seems to make a half-hearted effort. Ever use Google apps? They are barely usable, and google does not seem interested in fixing long standing bugs.
The Swedish Standards Institute has declared its recent vote in favor of Microsoft's Office Open XML format invalid. It means that Sweden will probably abstain from an important upcoming international vote on whether to make the format a standard.
The reason given by SIS was not the controversial circumstances surrounding the vote, in which Microsoft was found to have offered companies "incentives" if they voted in favor of OOXML. Instead, SIS cited a technicality, saying proper procedures had not been followed.

IMO: this is a real problem with using any google service, other than the search engine.
You never know when Google is going to pull the rug out from under you. Google does this sort of thing all the time. How can we trust any service from Google?
New Gates-funded database keeps addresses and social security numbers of millions of children, so don’t worry
But the most influential new product may be the least flashy: a $100 million database built to chart the academic paths of public school students from kindergarten through high school.
In operation just three months, the database already holds files on millions of children identified by name, address and sometimes social security number. Learning disabilities are documented, test scores recorded, attendance noted. In some cases, the database tracks student hobbies, career goals, attitudes toward school – even homework completion
And Microsoft is pushing for a law in Massachusetts that would prevent Google from being used for educational use, based on alleged and vague claims of conceivable privacy issues, when Google does *not* turn on ads for kids? Are they kidding?! What hypocrisy. And what interesting timing.
> The exact statement is: "Calls on the EU and its Member States to take concrete action on its resolution of 16 September 1997 on discrimination against women in advertising, which called for a ban on all forms of pornography in the media and on the advertising of sex tourism"
Repeat: " which called for a ban on all forms of pornography in the media "
This would include advertising, but not be exclusive to advertising.
Among other things Islam believes in: wife beating, female genital mutilation, polygamy, punishing female victims of rape, honor killings, alq divorce, and child marriages.
Other than Google's core advertising business, Google are not that great. Docs, drive, whatever they call it is very poor quality.
Fact: most H1Bs are entry level.

Use a thumbdrive, SDHC card, or store everything in the cloud.
The world is changing.
You remind of on the people who used to say that x86 architecture could never be used for servers.
1) Linux runs very well on Chromebooks.
2) The Samsung Chromebook was Amazon's biggest selling laptop. Which is impressive considering there where none available for about two months.
I think offsite data centers will become more popular. But, I do not expect any major shift within that timeframe.
Internet access has to become much more reliable, fast, and secure, before such moves become practical for many companies.

And by that I mean actually open, not OOXML.
> Linux admins cost twice to three times as much as their Windows admin counterpart
Where did you get this information? Please make sure you do an apples-to-apples comparison.
For example: don't compare somebody who does admin for 5 servers to somebody who does admin for 2000 servers.
replacement?
This is also pushing Americans away from the tech field. Which will, eventually, cost the US it's technological edge.
If you want Americans to be attracted to engineering jobs, provide jobs for them.
With the right ear phones.
When ever I go to the library. People start standing around and whispering, and snickering, on and on.
It is not loud, but it very distracting.
This post makes no sense at all. It might have made some sense a year ago.

Bill Gates is pretending to care about the privacy of children just to continue his Tonya Harding tactics against Google.
If BG gave a damn about the privacy of students, he would not be funding this database.
No mention on slashdot about the student database that Bill Gates is funding. This is becoming normal behavior for slashdot.
It's sad, I can remember when slashdot was a refreshing oasis from all MS propaganda on other sites.
Ah well, at there is Groklaw.
Not really *that* overpriced. But overpriced enough that nobody will buy it.

Absolutely. And look at the way the comments are being voted up and down. Slashdot is over run with corporate shills.
