I left school three years ago, the principal and the entire administration went on to a school board in a nearby city, and I had my own little bit of revenge later that year, in my final issue, when I figured I had nothing left to lose but walking the stage. In my final column, "I thank Mr.--------, my journaism advisor, for sticking his neck on the line versus the administration to give this punk kid a chance. You have showed me that even in the face of horrendous tyranny, one person's opinion can matter. And to all the parents who found me offensive for speaking my views... if you don't like it, either don't read it, or prove me wrong. Either choice is fine by me."
They let me walk, but I got VERY dirty looks from the admins. And a high five from my advisor and the one teacher who understood.
To be honest, I got rid of the issue.
But I made very sure to put nothing defamatory in it. The closest thing was something like, "People need to look at a whole person before they judge. Not just at the clothes they wear, but at who they are as a person, as a whole. Judging by appearance alone, especially at this time in our lives, is not only reprehensible, but sometimes unforgivable."
And I also commented in the article on the "Goth" and other cliques, without naming names, and said they were guilty of the same thing. None of them complained.
I even knew some of the peple who complained, the "popular" crowd. They had to ask for help with some of the big words. No kidding.
The "popular" crowd, and to a much larger extent, the well to do parents, honestly felt tht it was their right to be judgemental. And what scared em the most, was that I knew for a fact that these parents and the Administration were on very good personal terms. (ie, Country Club Buddies, etc.)
So they wanted the paper to be feel-good, by whatever they had to do.
I was an editor for my High School newspaper. As such, I was allowed to write a column every month.
My column in October of my senior year was about appearance. I was constantly put down and insulted because I did not wear Tommy Hilfiger, or Abercrombie, or whatever. So the jist of my column was "Get to know a person before you judge them. Don't judge based on appearances alone."
The day after the paper came out, the Administration got 150 complaints. From parents and students, saying I was, to quote, "A bitter young man, out to ruin people's lives" and "A sore loser, because I was poor".
I, and my Journalism Advisor were pulled down to the head principal's office, and berated for 2 hours. I had to put an apology in to people I offended with my column. I was told all my columns for the rest of the year would have to be reviewed be the Administration beffore they could go to print, and that if my columns didn't start being more upbeat, discussing the football team and the "normal people", I was going to be removed.
Normal people. He meant the popular people. The ones who treated me like shit, I was now TOLD to revere in a public forum.
More proof that the public school system has it's head so far up it's ass it has to unzip to speak.
And don't talk to me about the Hazelwood act, I got that thrown at me too... Hell, the principal wanted to suspend me until the next issue with the apology came out.
One, will it work on a Non-IBM made machine? It lists a bunch of Thinkpad Models, but until someone tests it ohterwise, people will stay away.
Two, will it work on a Mac? This would be perfect to go along with my iBook. I may even get one of the thumbdrives, keep my System folder on it, and boot from my keychain everytime. Very cool.
for a truly great gamesystem that was killed before it's time.
I'm picking up an extra spare. You guys clamoring over PS2 pictures? I'll be at home playing PSO. You guys talking about how great XBOX will be? I'll be at home playing Shenmue. You guys wishing you had a Gamecube right now? I'll be at home playing JGR. Long live Dreamcast! Viva Sega!
I am an ardent Sega-Backer. I own every Sega System sold in the US, an assload of games, and tout the virtues of Sega over the hype machine that is Sony.
But as usual, another week goes by, another "Sega is going under" story. Not just on Slashdot, but everywhere. Us real DieHards know to just sit back, smile, and let the good stuff keep rolling in. Viv la Sega!
More Apple Bad, Linux Good BS. Look, there is room in the market for ALL OS's. Each one has its own market it caters to, Apple's is just getting a little bigger.
Slashdot, where Apple is evil, Linux is beatified, and JonKatz can make ANY topic boring as hell.
You might wanna pick up a copy of Robo-Rally. I know, it's a board game from Wizards Of The Coast, and may be hard to find.
The premise is about the same as Carnage Heart, but it's on a robot factory floor, and you play cards giving the robots movement orders. Plus there are conveyer belts, weapons, damage, and save points.
Rogue! I thought I was the only one who remebered that. My grandfather of all people taught me to play that, as well as Kingdom of Kroz and the Apogee games. We live here in Dallas, so we have a bunch of the original games on the original disks. Still play em to this day.
I wanna get in line NOW. Not now, but RIGHT NOW.
Damn that movie looks good. And since I saw Thora Birch topless in American Beauty, that makes it all the better.
Of course, another group tries to shut down any negative information out there about them. If he had posted positive stuff, he would still be there. But companies expect us to be good little drones and just be happy we have any service at all. MY pager went out for an hour yesterday, and I called and raised holy hell. And you know what? It felt good. There are other services out there, if they break the contract on @Home's end, feel free to break yours. Know that contract backwards and forwards, and use it to your advantage! The companies do!
Now this is a party platform I can get into. But where is the Natlaie Portman angle? And we also must find some way to put a limit on free speech, lest Jon Katz goes nuts and writes tirades taking up my free time even more than now.
But this is something very cool. Being able to create an almost perfect 3D representation of an object, on a temporary basis, has its merits. Now it remains to be seen what the applications of this will be. Time will tell.
OK, I own a DC. Yeah I know, I'm a big damn fan of the underdog. Apple, Sega, I also root for the Coyote.
Anyway, I agree with Sega. If they don't defend their intellectual property, (Logos, manuals, boot Roms) then they lose it. The only way to do it is to issue sweeping draconian statements like they did.
Don't get me wrong, I like emu's as much as the next guy. But only for things like older systems, where he parts can no longer be purchased. NES, etc. They should be released into the public domain. Any current selling systems new from the company, I believe should be protected until the system is discontinued.
It's a hell of a philosophy, I know. But hey, I don't have any lawyers on my back to question it.
And be careful of Hotmail, and Beef-Cake.com ( A South Park Site). One wrong keystroke and it's porn city. Unless, of course, that is what you are looking for....
Two companies, joined at the wallet, working together you say? Trying to make money, huh? Well I'll be damned. I never expected companies to try and make money.
The iBook has had 6 hours of battery life (in theory) since the beginning. I've managed to squeeze about 5, 5.5 or so. Not 6. But still a damn fine amount of time.
I hace on of the first iBooks. 32MB Ram, 3G HD, blah blah blah. And no, it did not run OS9, it ran OS8.6. It's good machine for what it does, but now I'm ordering one of the Key Lime SE's. DVD, Firewire, and Video Out is just too cool too pass up, and it's a hell of a price.
Once again, a little WinTel interest pops into my head, and Jobs promptly squashes it with these cool machines.
It's going to be big, it's going to be bloated, it's not going to be perfect. It's a BETA. Public, yes. But still a beta. I don't expect it to run on my machines yet. I'll get it, but just as a lark.
If Apple gave everyone everything in the beta, what incentive would people have for buying the full version when it comes out next year? NONE.
Just because they are sue-happy right now doesn't mean they are totally stupid.
And when they drain Bungie Studios of all it's worth, it too, will be discarded.
Why does Microsoft sound a lot like a vampire? It drinks till it's full, then tosses the withered husk by the wayside.
(shudder)
That is really all I have to say. Wow. That quarter into a tauroid is incredible. The level of detail kept is incredible. I am dumbfounded.
Now let's get a home version.
Let me clarify.
I left school three years ago, the principal and the entire administration went on to a school board in a nearby city, and I had my own little bit of revenge later that year, in my final issue, when I figured I had nothing left to lose but walking the stage. Who was it who said, "He who trades privacy for safety deserves neither." or something to that effect.
Well, two actually.
Very cool.

Something Neutral towards Apple? On SLASHDOT?
(Quickly checks CNN.com)
No, Hell hasn't frozen over yet. Hrm. Must be Katz's day off
Slashdot. Where bashing anything but Linux is not just a job, it's a way of life!
News for nerds my ass.
So the head of a company CAN'T be frank with people? I personally want a CEO who tells it like it is. Makes me have faith in the company.
Slashdot. Where anything bashing Apple, beatifying Linux, and involving FPS's is news.
