  1. Response on Universal Music Prepares for Copy-Protection Complaints · · Score: 3, Insightful

[Letter sent to the comment EMail]

I am a member of a organization of Audiophiles here in Dallas. We purchase on average a total of around $10-11,000 worth of audio CD's and equipment a year.

My personal stereo system is compased of several Macintosh and Linux-based systems, as well as very high end audio components.

I see that your new protection scheme is designed to destroy fair use rights as given to the citizens of the United States, under the guise of copyright protection. Becuase of this, I will not be able to play any of your new discs, and refuse to spend my money to take the chance that it may work.

Reading over your new copyright protection scheme, I will make sure that none of us ever purchase another "CD" released by Universal.

These discs violate the CD-DA standard, as they are not playable in every device bearing the same emblem. I will push all retailers I do business with to stop carrying your products, or at the very least, inform customers that these discs may not play in ANY device they own.

This is a very slippery slope you have started down. We deal with other audiophile organizations across the US, and we will see fit that these discs are never purchased by any person with any common sense.

    Respectfully..

  5. Re:why so negative towards xbox? on XBox Released · · Score: 1

There's a reason other than that why Sony got into the biz. Sony was developing the PSX originally as an Add-on to the SNES, kinda like the Sega CD idea. After a few years dev, Sony had this great system, but Nintendo backed out last minute, scared that Sony was going to end up running the whole show. Nintendo then started to work with Panasonic for hardware developing. Sony was then stuck with this great piece of hardware. They just adapted it, and with a bit of prodding from Ken Kutagari, released the PSX.

They wanted to see if they could recoup some R&D, they had no idea it would take off. But once it did, they would have been stupid not to keep it advancing.

Yes, some HACKED PIECES OF SOFTWARE may not work under a new kernel. When you put a new Linux kernel in, does every HACK you've put in work? No. Most people who are getting 10.1 now are people who are going through a lot of effort to get it, and most would not mind updating other questionable pieces of software to insure compatibility. On the whole, 10.1 blows 10.0.4 out of the water.

    >Let's think for a minute here:

    Yes, let's.

    >10+ million units sold worldwide and still going strong

Yeah, by lying to their retail channels about shipments and shipping a few as possible to create an artifical demand.

    >Hundreds of games available

I assume you mean the PSX library, cause the PS2 library is woefully thin. And not all the PSX games will work. Check your data.

    >Tons of games on the horizon

Tons of crap is still crap. Quantity does NOT equal quality.

    >Powerful marketing savvy

I'm gonna tell a story. When I bought my Dreamcast, Sony was pushing stores like crazy to do PS2 pre-orders, so they could kill the Dreamcast early. It worked, to my chagrin. When the PS2 came out, and no store had them, some stores started doing XBox and GameCube pre-orders. They were warned by Sony to stop doing preorders, or else their PS2 shipments, mediocre already, would be cut in half. Even though that is exactly what they did. It's extortion. If you consider abusing your position to be "Marketing savvy", by all means.

    >Rock-solid online plans

    "You've got lag!"

    >Priority support from practically every 3rd party developer

SEGA? No. Sega is backing the XBox. And regardless of what EA says, SEGA is a player right now.

    >Solidifying 1st party (Jax, Gran Turismo 3, Ico, Dark Cloud, Extermination, Phase Paradox, Drakan, Wipeout Fusion, SOCOM, The Devil and I, Twisted Metal Black, The Getaway)

Yeah. I'm excited about NONE of those.

    >Still riding the hype wave, control over consumer mindshare

You actually count consumer brainwashing as a plus? Must be a Windows user.

    >Killer, must-have titles (Gran Turismo 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, Devil May Cry, Twisted Metal Black, Final Fantasy X, Tekken 4, Soul Calibur 2)

At least two of those are still unconfirmed. (Tekken4, SC2) As far as the others, besides MGS2, they are all retreads of older games. I'll believe when I see.

    >Huge headstart on the competition

If they had shipped any consoles to get a headstart, I'd believe that. They seemed content to reduce their buyers to have and havenots. Proof? Still selling the PSX. If Sony really believed the PS2 was the way, they would shut down the PSX, and go all out.

    >Other consoles are getting "table scraps" from PS2's gaming table

Scraps?? Once again, look at Sega. Sony wishes they could develop like that. Look at Nintendo's 1st and 2nd party support. Sony WISHES.

    >No longer facing potential delays/shortages. The pressure's on MS and Nintendo now.

Nope. MS uses off the shelf stuff, that has been tested. Nintendo uses a variant of the PowerPC chip, very easy to fab. I still have not seen a PS2 in stores, I shop all day every weekend, and I live in a major city. Sony can't make em. Like I said, if they were so damn sure, kill the PSX.

    >As you can see, Sony clearly has this war. Now >the battle for 2nd place will be fought between >MS and Nintendo. I predict Nintendo will win.

Sony has won JACK. It's a three way race. And it is very close.

As a sidenote. You know Sony has released specs for the PS3, right? When they couldn't make shipments they had the nerve to unveil a plan to eliminate the PS2 in about three years, and go with the PS3. How many other console makers admit they screwed up? Just Sony. They know fanboys will buy any piece of crap with the Sony name on it.
