No no! It's Wednsday, and we only boycott Adobe and M$. Tommorow and Sunday is when we boycott Disney, then on Mondays and Fridays we tell off the MPAA. Tuesdays is when we all get together and stomp on the BSA. Then on Saturday we choose whichever one to boycott.
I've always wondered about this... like for example spray-painting some old 386's with some pop culture logos ("Check this out!!! I'z got for you a computer from da GAP!") then sell them off at a high price proclaiming how hip it was to be back in the '70s using UNIX. Say, like... oh, $1500 for this "cool" computer.
Anyway, it was only an idea:-) It'd probably work... that's the sad part
Microsoft sales and marketing director John O'Rourke said fewer than 1 percent of the consoles have proven faulty.
Yeah, and the rest just have random Green Screens of Death or the TV burst into flames, right?
Oh this is so M$ rhutoric: Hype up product, overcharge, make it not work well, make up money on support... so that's how they'll make up the $100 loss!
It does rotate, but it's in sync with its revolution around Earth. 29 day rotational period; 29 day revolution (rounded for the sake of simplicity). So in the end, because of the tidal effect from earth, we only see 58% of the total surface area of the moon. The other 42% we never see due to this syncing of rotation and revolution.
That I am aware of, but it isn't complete. What I've seen in RH 7.x is that while there are default rulesets (which is good) they still leave services on (like NFS, portmap, and sshd). Mandrake if you don't specify will set the default to LOW and that's not good at all (this on 8.1; can't say otherwise -- the other part that got to me was the lack of a firewall without installing routing/gateway tools).
The other part is that the X server IS listening, and I don't really care about the port being blocked or not in firewall tools; I'd rather have it off period. Debian turns off this by default.
Good point, and there should be a focus on the potentual of Linux virii out there (though most of the focus has been on fixing probable remote exploits which in itself can do some contaminations since some servers NEED root permissions to run.) Again, distros SHOULD turn off servers by default, don't let X run its listener, etc, etc, to prevent remote exploits but also there needs to be a focus to scan for virii especially if you have a heterogenus network to work with in case there's multiple platforms that could be targeted. Though the article is correct; the reason why we Linux users don't get targeted is because we know better. This will change if Linux starts to gain market share to a point of at least 15%-25%. Either this 15%-25% will be bright, or they will be gullable to virii, I can't say.
Let's hope MS doesn't return to the old "The Job's not through 'til it doesn't run on OS/2!" days.
Hopefully not, but if they did it would only give M$ more legal trouble to deal with, so after all this going on with the DOJ (yes, it does still cost M$ huge sums of money to file, protest, whine, buy^H^H^H donate to politicans, spread propoganda, and all the mean while their image gets tarnished, making ppl less likely to buy XP and into.NET).
Otherwise all it would kill is Lindows. By then though, the damage may already be done, and people are porting applications to Linux.
I don't think I want a DBC; I'd rather not have my brain subject to DRM... or some 5c2||*7 ||dd|3 coming and hax0r'ing my brain to get pr0n and MP3s...
I'm more sure that those three organizations are most likely running their own home-brewed OS so at least they can have the sources under their control and their security levels can be assessed in the intrest of national security. I'm sure that they wouldn't be so stupid as to run Windoze XP, at least not without having M$ cough up source code for a security audit.
No you're correct here; 1/2 our "Bill of Rights" is protections for crimials (4,5,6,7,8). 1 is the most reverended here, 9 is where things like privacy, abortion, etc, come in, 10 is a matter of juristictions, 2 is our guns, and 3 doesn't really matter anymore (we don't have a real need to quarter soldiers in homes with all the bases).
Unfortuately, since I'm stuck in the US, it gets difficult to aquire other legal texts outside the US... and I'm too lazy to search Google:-)
What I do think that would be the problem is of course, different ways to word things, and also using various code. Not nessiary the usage of Hindu here, but Arabic too. If they -really- wanted to be paranoid, the usage of keywords in English and Chinese could be used as well.
Now, counterpoint to all the crypto-related flaws: There are chances where snooping would cause a situation where the actual criminal were to slip and send an unencrypted email msg. It's very possible. A point that I agree with is that the crypto -will- hurt efforts because of the need to have the computer power to crack the crypto, which based on some technologies this could be a very time-consuming task that wouldn't help on timely matters.
Ho hum -- in India I'm sure they don't have the US rights the US people all love and enjoy, so the Indians are going to just have to deal with it.
StrongARMs usually don't include FPU co-processors because of the heat that FPUs generally make, not to mention power consumption. Now, about the FPU calculations, we can do the following:
1) We can handle FPU calculations in software. Quickest way to get Quake II in one of these things, but slow due to the calculations required. This may or may not hamper performace due to the graphical subsystem that is in Quake II, and this option may not be so ideal.
2) Handle all floating-pt. math as integer math, and "just move the decimal point around". This of course could be done by my first point, but doing in the code itself helps optimize the binary so that no FPU emmulation is required. Inputs can be taken in as strings then converted into a struct where, say, the value only held 4 bytes, a 16-bit signed int for the whole number and a 16-bit number for the fraction (and the IEEE 32-bit float is 4 bytes). This obviously requires more work and digging through the source, but it will make the code more efficent, and most likely be able to keep the execution speed up so that there is no noticable lag for gameplay.
This is amazing! Never in my life would I think that M$ would be as dumb as to be like this.
What really makes M$ asicine is the following:
M$ can't do no wrong.
M$ isn't at fault; the guy/gal that found the exploit is.
"M$ makes good products!" they preach, but in reality they are piss-poor quality that have more problems than their competition. Not to say that the competition has flawless software, but M$ tends to have more bugs and severe issues. So hold back your flame...
M$ doesn't care about their customers, they care about their customer's money. They feel that they don't have to do anything good to secure their computers, just focus on putting a dog on the screen and make it go "Good morning!" This is one reason why I support Linux and their companies.
Finally, M$ doesn't believe in QC. That's right, Quality Control is important. Code audits, testers, secruity audits; whatever -- bottom line: Do a better damn job with QC.
That my friends, will be M$'s demise... lack of QC.
well well... honestly, being a college student, you hear about how the computers sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars for some of the mainframes (though I certain can believe that on a PDP-8) it's so hard to comprehend the costs these days! It's such a wonder what you could fit into those small areas...
Well, it was meant to be funny in a way, but you're absolutely right. This cheap RAM is the only way we could possibly have the speedy CPUs we do today -- instead of having to worry about weither to do a CISC or RISC archatecutre to save four bytes or so and allow the OS and apps to fit within say, 640k RAM, we can now focus upon heavy optimizations of the CPU (and now the CISC and RISC ideas are a matter of preference; RISC though is cleaner in design the majority of the time). If anything, the ability to make cheap RAM was a "killer app" of its time, and we must not forget that.
Now off to my studies for my final in CPU design...
At the end of the day, it comes down to what you're used to, really. If you've never used any OS before, you could probably learn Mandrake 8.1 just as fast as Windows XP.
I'm glad someone brought this up, because it's completely true. I know of a middle-aged woman that began on the command line in Linux and never saw a GUI until this summer in Windozs 95. Her ability to use the command line is decent, for a non-technical person. She can pass parameters, redirect, and pipe. She can't write scripts, but that's OK, it isn't like she has to do cron jobs for her day-to-day usage.
Getting her to a GUI was difficult. She knew about a mouse and its usage because of GPM, but in Windoze 95 we had to remind her that the middle mouse button didn't act like in the CLI over in Linux and that it was ^C^V. The next statement form her was that she didn't want to suddenly stop the program! In X, we had some simmilar issues, but now she seems to be fine between the CLI and GUI, and also between Linux and 'doze.
Conclusion: Yeah, M$ pushing that it's easier to use Windoze than anything is hogwash. It's a matter of your teachers like anything else.
PS: The reason why she started with the CLI in Linux is because her son (now a Loki Programmer) is a Debian guru.
We had to pay TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS for one MESELY 32k of RAM! We had IRON CORES to actually use. And we didn't have these flimsy PCBs to work with we were lucky to have VACCUM TUBES!
Why I remember when we used punch cards too and we programmed on the BARE METAL! Why we were lucky to have an ASSEMBLER or a punch card!
Damnit! That's hillarious! But let this be something to show the world about "syndromes" -- we could make a diagnostic criteria for them also. Heck, why don't we make a mental illness for those who open M$TD's?
Absolutely! I for one am on a way to success, and I don't have to worry so much about "having x social skills so he can make it" -- this is not the point.
<RANT>
Everyone looks at autism is a Bad Thing(TM). It is merely the vantage point you look at it. Autism is so abstract it is difficult to pinpoint, diagnose, and more importantly *ACCURATELY* diagnonse! While one doctor may exclaim "Oh, but your child's severely autistic and won't make it into the world, and besides that, (s)he will be lucky to take a dump on a toilet!" another doctor may say "Your child's autistic, but mild. Don't worry about it, your child will be fine." So everyone stop panicing; sit down; chill. It's not known how it comes, and if you were autistic yourself, would you care? I'm autistic, and I don't care how it starts. And no, it's not MMR/secretin/apples/milk/whatever fuck you too.:-P I bet if they saw what was going into my stomach, the next cause for autism would be caffeine! The amount of paranoia about autism is enough to make autistics themselves pissed, irritated, irate, upset, sad, and/or suicidal. Autism isn't a Bad Thing(TM) -- it can very well be a Good Thing(TM).
Let me explain further: Everyone isn't "normal". There is x anomoly that deviates from what an European-based society calls "normal". The autistic community on-line at least refers to those not on the autism spectrum as "Neuro-Typical" or NT for short. "Normal" as we see it is an utopia, which I'm sure a lot of psychologists would agree. People use their own skills and attributes to deal with life, and autistics are no different. afaik, I am a homo sapien.;-) I am human, and I have flaws. Those who read this are also human, and have flaws. My flaws rest in communication, where others may have other flaws. This is human nature. I have skills, too. I'm in IT; I can code in C/C++, perl, and on a couple archatures in assembler. I secure routers and am working on a CCNA. Other people have other skills, and it makes the world go 'round.
So why the witch hunt for autistics? What did we do? Do we deserve to be hunted down and turned into mindless people so we become NT? Who says that's the way to go? Could be our traits is what's next in evolution; you don't know!

Ah, OK, I wasn't aware of Indian law. But yeah, I agree about Dec. 13th and Sept. 11th being a very good platform for this.
