This article is yet another case of a few rotten Apples (pun completely intended) ruining everything for the rest of us.
As a nearly 20 year Mac user, at this point I really do go out of my way to avoid using Windows if I can. Alas, I sit here at my office typing this on a Dell until our G5 editing station arrives.
But I guess, what I really wanted to say about this post is that I expect a better, more clever, more insightful diatribe from a MENSA member. This posting reads like any other PC user who is sick of the (grantedly overzealous) Mac press touting the superiority of their platform of choice and it's users.
I've met some staggeringly brilliant Mac, *NIX and Windows users over the years. I've genreally discovered that idiocy and brilliance are platform agnostic. Yes, graphic designers have a tendency to be pretentious and snobby. And yes, they predominantly use Macs. Yes, coders tend to be a little less socially adept and more reclusive, finding solace in their work and the online world. Yup, they tend to use x86 based machines running any number of diferent OS'es.
Oh, wait! I'm falling into the trap of stereotyping! Calculatedly so to prove a point. This article brings out the worst in the readers of this site. It brings out prejudice to a truly absurd degree. Anyone who generalizes about the quality of a person's character or intelligence based upon their preference of OS'es, should simply put their mental energies to more constructive use.
If you get worked up over a silly little article like this, really... walk away from the computer. Take a vacation. Do something other than think about platforms and the stupid ideological wars they create; because truly... they are stupid and pointless.
I'm a long time, avid Mac user. I'm going to remain on this platform for a long time. I pay a lot of money for my copmputers.... willingly, happily. If that makes me less than intelligent in the eyes of Windows/x86 users, so be it. At least I get to use Final Cut Pro. That makes me happy.
All of this is funny! Stupid generalizations piled upon stupid generalizations. As an almost 20 year Mac user, I'm pretty adept at not only using the system, but also with just about every design and multimedia program out there. I know I'm not average within the Mac community though. I've had to learn it to the level I have out of professional necessity.
I also know Windows to a relatively high degree of copmpetency. Not an expert level by any stretch of the imagination, but again out of professional necessity and definitely not by choice!
As for the "average intelligence" of users of different platforms... well, it's a seriously stupid topic to begin with. Granted, Mac users might tend to have more of a right brained approach to the world and learning and expressing themselves and Windows and *NIX based oeprating systems force more of a left brained approach, I don't think it's fair to say that one is smarter or more expressive than another.
There are those that express themselves through coding which is an awe-inspring combination of left and right brained thinking and there are those that express themselves through graphics, multimedia, and office apps. It is truly Apples and Oranges.
I do tend to believe that the tendency for abuse of grammar and spelling tends to be higher on the Windows/*NIX side of things, but that's just my personal experience.
Basically everyone should ignore this gigantic troll of an article and subsequent news posting. WHoever wrote and researched it has successfully filled up a portion of their brain and harddrive space with essentially pointless bullshit.
a Mac user and former worker-at-MS-Game-Studios, it was really really really weird to see this on the FRONT FREAKING PAGE of the PI; especially since there is much more pressing news to be covered like the Presidential race, the debacles in Iraq and Afghanistan, etc. It was just too impossibly weird to see dozens of B&W G3's on the cover of the Seattle P-I. Definitely a cool article to see for Mac users in the Puget Sound area, but hardly worth front page attention.
I agree with you in sentiment and applaud your sense of conscience and duty. It's very admirable to use a P2P service and then put money into a PayPal account for an artist.
But just like capitalism and socialism are good ideas in theory, getting the majority of people to actually adhere to their tenets is nearly impossible. Most of the people who rally behind the flag of capitalism don't really know the true idea behind capitalism and support the "greed=good" model of capitalism as the US practices it.
For now, the iTunes DRM "works" for me. It's painless really. I have other social issues that I rally behind and unfortunately don't have the energy to rally behind most DRM issues.
But again, I applaud you well thought out argument. Keep tilting at thgose windmills!
Yes yes yes, the Great Compromise. And yes, 3/5 not 3/8... my bad. Thanks for the correction. You cannot however dispute the fact that the Great Compromise led to the South having unfair representation based on their non-voting slave population. There is a connection between slavery and the Electoral College... a tenuous connection, but it's there.
The Electoral College is a relic and flies in the face of the idea of democracy. I mean it wasn;t until the 1970's when Electors were required to vote for the candidate who took the state in the popular state election. Hell Reagan got 1 electoral vote in the early 1970's when he wasn't even running for office.
Pardon my inaccuracies, but the Electoral system is flawed and has on several occasions elected an unpopular president.
The poster who beat me to this took the words right out of my mouth. Pretty much nailed it actually.
Business in general can also be considered a branch of the government since businesses spend so much money on PAC's, lobbyists and bribing elected officials to pass legislation that best suits their particular business needs.
Basically, money talks nowadays, and the money has bought the fourth branch. Just look at Fox News Network. Try and tell me that's even close to being fair and even handed coverage of anything, let alone liberally biased!
Well, the Southern States back in the day had very low populations in comparison to the Northern States. So, in order for the Southern States to have similar representation in Congress and in voting, slaves were counted as 5/8 of a person in terms of representation. This determined the number of Congressmen and Electoral Votes a state would get in the Presidential Election. It was a compromise between the North and the South resulting from the slavery issue. When slavery was abolished, the Electoral College stayed intact and has very little relevance to the actual will of the people in terms of elections and now only serves to elect presidents who do not win the popular vote.
With two minutes samples of each song on an album and links to artist web sites that most often have complete songs, you get a much better taste than you do with a 30 second clip.
Man, if they were selling Ramones albums, people could just download the samples because the average Ramone song is only about 90 or so seconds!
When it comes to Iraq, well, I never supported the war. I want to know where these weapons are. 3 months after the war is declared over and we still have yet to see them or have any proof of whether Saddam is alive or dead. Also where is Osama?!
Like I said, I don't belong to or believe in either of the two major parties. Also like I said, anyone who can get elected to a high public office is not someone who SHOULD be in that office. This political system has failed in practice. In 2000, the Electoral College showed all it's ugly faults in a HUGE way! I can't believe this relic from the days of slavery is still allowed to function. When are we going to see a viable 3rd party candidate who isn't crackpot like Perot or Jesse Ventura?
Basically, when I hear statements about "The Left", I start getting angry because, as a member of the left, I resent being categorized with the Democrats who are about as far left in their thinking as the GOP in general. Being for better school funding does not make one necessarily a left leaning thinker.
Let's face it, our government is leaning so far right that the leaning tower of Pisa looks vertical in comparison.
I love how the left has such doom-and-gloom for any minor thing they don't support (don't privatize social security, everyone will end up broke with no retirement! I don't care if we're talking about privatizing only 2% and leaving the other 98% alone exactly as it is!)
There's an old saying that it takes 2 years for an administration's economic and social policies to have an effect. With GW in office for 2 1/2 years now and the economy in the crapper, 2 wars under his belt, a scandal regarding forged information on Iraq's attempts to purchase nuclear materials and the GOP controling every branch of the government.. including the fourth branch... I'd say the left has pretty good cause for complaint! Things aren't good right now at home or abroad. The rest of the world hates us (UK and Spain excluded)and we're seeing unemployment figures that rate right up there with the recession of the 70's.
Now, don't get me wrong. I don't blame ALL of this on the Republicans. I blame it on the failure of the American political system... the fact that anyone who can get elected to office really isn't fit to serve in the best interest of the people.
Wow!This isn't even in the realm of a biased opinion. This is just flat out ignorance of the capabilities of FCP. I've used Premiere extensively as well as FCP. I can tell you with certainty that you got those statements backwards! The very fact that you can put a transition ABSOLUTELY ANYWHERE in FCP makes it more useable and functional than Premiere. Though not a true compositing or motion graphics app, FCP can do a lot of things more simply than even AfterEffects.
Premiere will not be missed on the Mac. I just feel sorry for all the Windows users who have been sucked in!
Nope she's not 1337. She is just nice enough to allow some of her neighbors to sue the computer, but is smart enough to give them their own accounts. I helped her set up the accounts.
Oh, you meant silly GUI switching? Fine. But why switch users when I can just 'sudo -u luser mongo-app --display:0'?
Silly GUI switching? It doesn't seem all that silly to my Mom who owns an iMac. I really don't want my mom dealing with sudo commands and all that other terminal stuff. The terminal may work just fine for you, but don't call my mom silly for using a GUI!
Um... most of us video editors are happy to see Premiere go bye bye on the Mac. Final Cut Express at $299 blows doors on Premiere and FCP at $999 is eating away at Avid's dominance. Premiere just never had a place on the Mac once Final Cut came out with 10 times the capabilities at twice the price of Premiere. Premiere was a good app once, but the real pro's are using Avid's and are starting to seriously look at FCP.
Look in the credits of any major motion picture and you will see that 9 out of 10 are edited on an Avid and the rest are being done with Final Cut. Not bad for a 3 year old program. Premiere will never show up in those credits because it's just not cut out for cutting feature length films!
Well, Adobe also has Acrobat, Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. In terms of publishing, Adobe is still the king. AfterEffects is a good mid-level compositing/motion graphics app and won't disappear any time soon, but Premiere is just a dinosaur! An aging piece of garbage. I'm glad to see it go bye bye on the Mac!
This machine is going to kick some serious booty when it comes to apps like AfterEffects, Photoshop, Shake, Commotion and Final Cut Pro. These are the "pro" machines after all and probably aren't going to be used for simple Office apps and such.
Ummm... Apple purchased it from Macromedia back in late '98 early '99. Macromedia had never released a final version of it. Knowing Macromedia, there probably was a Windows version in the works, but it never saw the light of day. Final Cut Pro 1.0 was Mac OS 9 only as was FCP 2.0. FCP 3.0 was the first version to run in OS X.
Um... that's pretty much an "unsubstantiated rumor" article. If Motorola had been manufacturing a viable G5 (a tern they would never actually use) Apple might have already been using. Motorola uses chip names like PPC 7450, etc. Apple uses the G (as in generation) to designate a radical change in processor performance or architecture change in the PPC line of chips. Motorola and IBM do not use the same names for the chips that Apple does.
With all the hype surrounding the G5, I can guarantee that OS X for X86 will not be released. Why hype an Intel version of the OS when the chip that will get them out of a sales slump is right around corner?
Ok, FrontPage garbage I'll agree with, but Dreamweaver doesn't write much garbage. Other than occasionally rewiriting my tabs to 4 spaces, Dreamweaver writes pretty damn clean HTML. Granted, I always go into BBEdit after I've done my layouts and really fine tune the code, but Dreamweaver definitely doesn't do crazy things like put in endless strings of BLOCKQUOTES to get formatting done.

It's called the pause button! Check it out!
well, Adobe has officially dropped Premiere for the Mac, so we should probably discount that app. AfterEffects would be a better benchmark.
p.s. Thank gawd Premiere is dead on the Mac! What a hideous editor!
No. The price of the OS that comes with it is negligible. Install the free *NIX of your choice after you reinitialize the HD.
Get over it!
This was about people who were pissed that Apple wasn't supporting the older G3's.... even though the advertising claimed otherwise.
Jaguar was a gawdsend for my Blue & White G3 400!
