If you are willing to commit to your hardware and spend a few hundred on your phone with no carrier contract you find yourself sticking that phone. Very little personal information with my carrier and I can move my SIM card around as need be, I also am free to drop in SIM cards I pick up while abroad in my personal phone. Unlocked phones just aren't marketed here, and thus the lack of marketing/education makes them less popular.
