I am glad someone in the government can think straight. I have accidentally bought copy protected cds, and promptly returned them, because of vague or deceptive labeling. I also decided to write to the record labels that distributed the copy protected cd's.
I wrote to the record label of de/vision, a german synthpop band. Both, are not well known (compared to, say britney). I have the complete transcription at copyproofcds.org . Eventually their final email said this:
thank you enjoy your coutry , enjoy your law and support the dying of bands good bye.
Needless to say, I am trying to spread the word about this fan-hostile record label.
The centralized database of wireless numbers would be off limits to telemarketers, and consumers would be able to choose whether to have their numbers listed or unlisted, according to people familiar with the process.
I know rates are high, and there is little or no competition in the area, however, its only television. It is not like you need television to live, it's entertainment. So what if you cannot afford HBO or Animal Planet.
It's like a car, if you want a certain feature, you most likely have to buy it in a package. Yes, I know it is a bad analogy, due to the fact that there is a lot of competition in the car arena, however it was the best I was able to think of.
I am not saying what the cable companies do is right, I am trying to put it into perspective. I am a cable customer, and I do pay around $100 per month for it, so I know how much they can screw you. But, I choose to pay it because I get pretty much what I want, and it doesn't put too big a hole in my pocket.
Like I said before, it is only television, you do not need it.
The problem with adding meta-information to existing sites, is that anyone can add them to their html code. There is no way to prevent some unscrupulous person using meta-information on their porn site, and saying it is a kid safe site. The only way to verify that would be to have an external server verify the meta-information. The kids.us domain does this, without adding another protocol to handle within the browser. I, am not using this to defend the kids.us domain, I am just saying there is a flaw to your logic
I love mozilla, and use it as my main browser. However my biggest complaint is that all the components (browser, mail, composer, etc) should be separate apps. I don't like the fact that if my browser crashes, so does my email reader, and vice versa.
I tried to find some documentation on how to acheive this, however, there was none to be found. Does anyone know how to do this, the I can use Mozilla's mail, rather than the flaky mail app that comes with OSX.
I am working on my new website, which deals with cd copy protection. I am trying to make it a collection of everyone's experiences in dealing with record labels. I wrote to many labels. and i only got one back, many months after my initial email.
I also want to collect a set of email addresses so it would be easy for anyone to email multiple record labels their feelings on copy protection.
If anyone wants to send me their experiences, you can email me at cristiana@cloud13.com
I guess i forgot to put this in, canada has a population of 31 million, and their gun murder rate for the entire country is under 200. Now, the US has a population of about 288million which is about 9 times that of canada. so normalizing the data would get: canada: 1850 US: 11,000 as you can see, the US has over 5 times the rate of canada
I just saw Bowling on friday, and this movie tries to get to the issue, of why there is so much gun violence in the us. It does happen to graze on the video game aspect, however it bypasses that as the reason, and later says, that the two columbine boys went bowling on the morning of the killings, so, is bowling responsible?
The movie touches on that most first world countries have yearly gun murder rates below 200, whereas, the us has over 11,000.
From what i gathered from the movie, they come to the conclusion that gun violence comes mainly from the extreme paranoia generated by every form of media. They compared the nightly news from canada versus the news in the US. The top story in the canadian news was about speed bumps, and the top stories in the US were all about death, and killing. Plus, to really bring their point home, they point out that canada has 10million homes, with over 7million guns in the country, so it's not the prevalance of guns that cause violence.
However, every person who wants some ammunition (pun intended) to fight the 'videogames kill' mantra of unenlightened politicians, and parents, go see this movie. It will definitely give you very good arguments to defend our position.
The same happened to me with the latest de/vision cd. It wouldn't play in my radio station's cd players, nor my pioneer pro-dj player which i use to dj at clubs in the like. So, i decided to post a rant on copyproofcds.org , in case anyone wants to read it.
The graphs at the end are totally unreadable. Who uses jpg compression on graphs? I dont think i would trust someones advice who doesnt even know how to properly encode images.
Ok, I know this is slightly offtopic, but i'll say it anyway. I have read all the various news stories about how email is/will kill conventional means of post. But, i feel the internet has created a huge increase in shipping. Why? because, before the net, not many people catalog shopped, however, since the net, so many more people are ordering online, and guess what, what they order gets shipped to them. Also, dont forget eBay, lots of sellers dont accept electronic payments, so how do you get the money to them, regular snail mail. Also, in the past, how many people actually sent letters to people, I remember the last time i mailed a letter, i was in grade school and writing to my assigned penpal.
oops typo, should have used preview i meant to say: And anyway, the post 9/11 measures weren't put in place to add to the safety of the passengers, they were put into place to stop people from hijacking the plane, and crashing them into buildings and the like.
I know i shouldn't feed the trolls, but, crowbars and the like werent permitted in the cabin in the past, and i am sure as hell that explosives werent allowed in either. And anyway, the post 9/11 measures were put in place to add to the safety of the passengers, they were put into place to stop people from hijacking the plane, and crashing them into buildings and the like. The pre 9/11 measures in place were to protect the passengers from being killed by an explosion or any other means.
Instead of frisking every passenger, and removing such lethal items like tweezers, just lock the cockpit. Have it only openable from the inside, and make it out of bulletproof material. And never allow opening the door during flight. The only problem i see with this is that the cockpit would now have to accomodate a bathroom, sleeping quarters and food storage for the cockpit crew.
I just looked on lik-sang, and the price of the gamepark is 199 while the gba is 69 (at amazon.com). it seems that they priced this way out of the market, when you could by a gba and three or four games for the price of one gamepark. Also, for 200, you are entering the territory of consoles and pdas. for a little more you can get a pda, which will play many games (albeit with a much worse interface), but you get all the fratures of a pda. also, if you just wanted a game system, well, you could spend the 199 on a gamecube.
I would have considered buying this for around 100 , but for almost 200 it doesnt seem worth it, considering you are guarranteed hundreds of games for the gba over the next few years. and among those, there will be many excellent games (like golden sun). whereas with the gamepark, what are you guarranteed? hundreds of crappy tetris clones?

You are thinking of the atari lynx. I had one also, it was the best portable out at the time, it blew away the gameboy, and game gear. too bad atari ruined it with their fabulous marketing.
After reading the article, and reading sonicblue's page, i still couldnt find two key specs for this machine, size and weight. I really think that this is because that the iPod is much smaller and weighs much less.
I own an iPod, and I prefer having a tiny device, that i can fit in my pocket, or even in the cellphone compartment on my bag. Also, the riot is still USB, i couldnt even imagine how long it would take to fill up the drive. I have a hard time waiting for the three or four minutes it takes to fill up my ipod.
Everyone also says that the 5gb on the ipod is not enough, and i thought that also, until i got one. I can hold around 700 songs encoded at 192k on the hard drive, which is 2 days worth of music. Now when are you going to listen to the complete 8 days worth of music on your Riot?
According to motu's website they have 2 devices which use firewire, the 828 and 896. Also, if you want to do professional quality audio, you really can't use linux, there are no pro-audio apps available, and i dont count the dozens of midi apps around. There is nothing comprable to Cakewalk, Cubase, Digital Performer, Logic etc. that runs on linux.
If you are planning on setting up a real recording studio, you will be spending many thousands of dollars, and you choose the operating system that has the apps you need, which leaves you with windows and macos.
Don't forget the new, but unannounced Dual Head iMac. This is the perfect machine for one or two people to use, it even has the option of running with two simultaneous users. Or, you can use it in traditional dual head mode, and it also comes with a lazy susan, so you wont scratch up your desk. order now!

Strangely enough, I can access the UKbetting.com, even though I am located in the united states, and newtorldmap pinpointed my location within a few miles.
I thought of two problems with this system, maybe a more comprehensve article would answer these questions.
Anyway, since humans are very good at remembering visual information, wouldnt it be fairly easy to watch someone login a few times and see which images are the same.
Also, i see another problem, if someone was watching you they can determine what images you select. This would happen because of the speed at which you would select the images. since, the images are most likely randomly placed, you cant remember the position of the items, so you have to process the complete set of images and then select the proper images. Then if someone is looking at you, they can see the keys you press, and associate it with the image.
Compare that to textual passwords. You know your password isn't going to change, and even if you type at 20wpm, it would only take 1 or 2 seconds to type the password. And I think, it is much harder to look at your fingers and determine which keys you hit at which time.

im not too new here, my uid is 1830. i know no one reads the articles, hee
It says, on the third paragraph down:
The centralized database of wireless numbers would be off limits to telemarketers, and consumers would be able to choose whether to have their numbers listed or unlisted, according to people familiar with the process.
I think the above makes their intentions clear
I know slashdot has no graphic artists, but they just ripped the tower image from another site. www.skystream.com

Just take this simple rule heavier is better. It has never failed me.

this picture looks suspiciously like the dual monitor iMac i made as a joke.
