  1. Carbon vs Cocoa on OS X Vs. Linux On The Desktop · · Score: 2

I dont know why everyone has this carbon versus cocoa debate. Carbon and Cocoa are just different API's for the same functions. Carbon. actually is a framework on top of Cocoa, and you can access most, if not all the features through Carbon This article, is the first one i found on it, google will probably turn up more in the carbon versus cocoa debate.

  2. openosx and problems with open source on Abiword: Support Expectations · · Score: 2

I think one problem with the open source philosophy is that is opens the door for companies like openosx. The people at openosx simply repackage unix apps to run on osx. however, they seem to make no mention of who wrote the software. for example if you look at this page they make no mention that they didnt write any of the software. Then they decide to charge $30 for their repackaging, and give nothing back to the community.

you can make the argument that the various linux distros do the same, but any of the good ones always give back to the community.

I feel that this practice will become even more of a problem in the future when a lot of the major open source apps come to maturity.

What is even worse on the discovery channel, is when they put up links to their website. they first make a fairly loud chime, which most of the time makes the dialog unintelligible, then they shrink the screen to put the link on a black background. it was one of the most intrusive logo i have ever seen.
as for the small translucent logo's in the corner, they dont bother me. as many other people said, they are actually useful when channel surfing because you can tell right away what channel you are watching. and when cable and satellite systems have well over 100 channels, it helps in locating any interesting programming.

i woke up this morning, it was a normal day. Then, i read slashdot and saw what happened. As i stared in disbelief at the newscast from cnn, i realized that a large part of my life will be changed for a long time. I live a short ride from new york city, up until recently i worked mere blocks from the towers. I saw them everyday when i drove the williamsburg bridge, i never thought they would be gone in my lifetime. I, as many other long islanders feel that the city was our city. At any moment i could go and experience the wonders of one of the greatest cities in the world.
i have memories, from my entire life, about going to the city to just look around, shop, and go to shows. Now, the twin towers, one of the symbols of nyc is gone. my life, as the lives of thousands, has been forever changed.
throughout the day, my phone was ringing all day, with people concerned about my family, and other people we knew. Thankfully, noone i knew was hurt. But others werent as fortunate.
Roads all throughout the area were closed, everything ground to a standstill.
Then, during the afternoon, around 2, i hear the sound of a plane. i ran to find the source, worried that another plane was going to hit. I have not felt fear like that in a long time.
The world is forever changed by the acts of a few. I give my condolences to all who died, and to those who helped save lives.

  14. My take on Mandrake on Mandrake Linux 8.0 Final Released For PPC · · Score: 2, Informative

I have been using linux on my Powerbook laptop for over a year. I have a website dedicated to getting Linux running on my particular laptop. I just recently nuked my old hacked LinuxPPC partition, and began to search for a replacement.

I first tried the beta of mandrake, and what i found was that despite its faults, it could shape up to be the easiest distro to set up on ppc processors. One item i found in the install that no other distro's included was the option to set and choose what keys you wanted to use to emulate the second and third buttons (e.g. f12, f13). And once it was installed, even though there were som rough edges, you could see the hard work the mandrake team went through. The one thing i find strange about the distro, is that all Drak* utilities are written for GTK, rather than QT, it just seems out of place in this kde centered distro.

now on to ydl 2.0. i was dissapointed in this release, because, i went through two installs (to see if i missed anything the first time round) and there was NO individual package selection. This is a big minus in my book. Plus after the system was up, even though this is subjective, it seemed much slower than my hand upgraded linuxppc distro. But, other than thos two faults, it is a good distro overall.

ok, on to suse. This mega distro with four cd's worth of stuff is a really good all inclusive distro. It had so many packages, everything you could want. I think this is a great power user's distro, because there are so many esoteric packages, and you can customize it all you want. The only item which can be considered a drawback, but i dont think so, is that the suse way of doing things is slightly different than the other rpm based distros. Its all up to personal preference.

Well, these are my short list of opinions on linux on PPC based machines, and if Mandrake fixed all the rough edges that were in their beta distro, it will IMHO be the best PPC distro out there.

I bought my imac a year ago just because it was pink, with all the intentions of putting linux on the box and tossing MacOS. I, however became lazy and kept macos on the system and used it soley as an internet terminal, and didnt install linux.
Over the course of time i came to realize that macos is a very well designed gui, almost everything is intuitive. Take for example drag and drop.

You highlight a clip of text and then drag it onto anything and it puts it where you expect it. Like if you put it on the desktop, it will give you a text clipping. DND for graphics also work well.
You grab a graphic and your cursor turns into a transparent version ofthe graphic and you can then drop it anywhere, like the text.

Another thing is is what some people call a limitation, it's the one mouse button, but i think its a feature. You never have to worry about which mouse button to press. For example in gnome (i am using helix gnome 1.2) i occaisonaly have too go through all three buttons to get to the menu i want, that is not intuituve. When i use macos the menus are either the menus in the menubar or available through holding down the button for a context submenu (or ctrl-click).

Another important feature is font smoothing, that makes reading anything a pleasure. The fonts are rendered perfectly on my imac and my powerbook. And i believe the font smoothing is better than the smoothing in windows.

this is just my minimal comparison of gnome 1.2 and macos 9. some features may be in other window managers or operating systems, these are just the ones i use on a daily basis.
