no no , no no. Intel Can't undercut AMD on costs because the die size for the P4 will still be larger than the athlon and intel still has ties to RAMBUS unfortunately. They have HUGE manufacturing capacity but they are not transitioning to cheaper methods , jsut smaller, also, AMD dresden was built with the intent to go to.13 very soon so the upgrade will be cheap compared to upgrade one of intels plants. Austin may be expensive but not as expensive as an intel plant either because they planned on.13 when they upgraded the.18 for the athlon.
First off, shutup. the ppro did NOT run 32bit code twice as fast, more like 20% faster. second, win95 was out at that time and EVERYONE was writeing 32bit code.
Second, the P4 was crippled to conserve costs. The P4 is TOO slow per clock to keep up if it weren't for intels marketing power.
Third, the P4 will NEVER hit 10Ghz, it will Never hit 4Ghz. It MIGHT make it to 3Ghz. Intel plans a transition to 64bit before 2006, 10Ghz isn't planned 5Ghz till 2005 and then will end the 32bit line of chips probably before they hit 6Ghz. Thats IF chips aren't radically different by then. oh, and the p3 should hit 1.5Ghz(tehnma or whatever codename they are using now)
I think its a shame bringing down MIR. Its a part of our history and it should remain up there in orbit. Maybee in the not to distant future it could be a museum. Its already in a stable orbit so why not leave it, i will cost more to bring it down than to let it set empty up there.

Its just a feeling and i support this new format, its may be a little to high end for most, but costs will fall as the format matures
I do agree, except that i think that the intel monopoly is partly responsible for the fight that AMD and now transmeta has given, and in fast shot up processor speeds.
One thing is for sure, intel had to much power when it mattered, because IBM picked the slower.weaker x86 line of chips over the more powerfull and faster 68k series.
On nthe bright side, at least windows is running on inferior hardware. MacOS is weak, but G4s are fast and it almost makes up the difference.
your just plain stupid, where did you get these scores? p2-233? it keeps getting lower the more you read..first p2-350, then 250, now 233 or even Original Pentium. You are just stupid. I have in fact seen a developers release of a 300Mhz crusoe and it compares to a p2-266. Do the math! everything in the crusoe system scales with the processor, so faster chip=faster ram so is scales pretty accurately. That means that it should compare to a p2-433 or so when running at 500Mhz.
Oh, and transmeta rates the crusoe at.5W when running under normal circumstances for a workstation laptop. That means running Office, or some bussiness app most of the time. Thats not running Quake3 24-7. The high end power consumption for this chip is te bottom end for the "new" p3. Oh, and Morres law says that the crusoe should be around 800-833mhz by this time next year. So this "new" 500Mhz speedstep p3 will be 300Mhz behind, and how would a 800mhz crusoe scale? Like a 667-700mhz p3. And i doubt that transmeta would just sit around and not pump up their chip just a little.
4xthe power=1/4 battery life | a %20 speed/Mhz advantage does not make up for a 300Mhz deficite.
With this technology, there wouldn't be a need for a "battery slot", just use that space to put two typeIII PCMCIA slots into the computer, that would reduce both weight and cost.
i noticed that someone has hoped for a PCMCIA laptop battery, well, this could be a standard, just pop 1 or 2 or even 3 of these batterys in, if you aren't getting online you have 12hours of juice, if you are, pop out a battery and you have 8hours, this would also alow instant "battery trades" without a power down, just pop the new battery in a different slot.
Ever have a problem with your WinCE device running out of batterys? even though the device is tiny it still sucks a lot of juice, do the same thing with PCMCIA batterys. your digital camera only gets 30 shots before it dies? Flat strap on batterys will fix that.
After 100 years with the current battery technology with very, very little change or improvement, its about time..
They want to put ALL of their energy in one direction and it just isn't worth much to push Solaris when they run linux.
two things i think Sun looked at:
1 - Drop Solaris in favor of Linux standards
2 - Drop Linux and put all effort into Solaris
3 - Keep both Linux and Solaris divisions and spend out the yang to support both.
Solaris is a GOOD OS, just as stable as linux and very supported. Sun has people who know Solaris inside and out, Solaris is like a standard inside Sun.
There is the possibility to make more revenue if they don't have to spend money to keep people working on the "spare" OS.
I would have liked to see them keep linux around but good luck to them.
im saying that the gov wont support linux, BSD is closer to being accepted than linux is. I know NT isn't compliant, but it was addopted in a day when the gov wasn't so picky about software.
You have to realize that linux has a weak point when it commes to being accepted as a replacement for M$, it is NOT 100% POSIX compliant, hobists and businesses use it but the US gov wont back it until it is compliant and the gov has a lot of power and influence.
Another thing, why does slashdot think that there are only two sides?(ms and linux) There are many sides and linux may not come out on top. There is a loyal following of BSD, the MAC is still strong despite everyones claims against it, and BeOS is a stable, powerfull OS that might get some development attention if MS were to get cut. QNX has a nice new OS out that is 100% posix compliant and has the beginnings of a nice GUI.
Microsoft(or one of the parts) would still have quite a bit of controll because of costly upgrades or change overs to other operating systems and data transfers. They would be in need just for compatibiliy with existing data files.
you trying to compare things that can't be compared, like saying a $80k porche is better than a $80k semi-truck. Damn right the porche is faster when you punch the gas, but try hauling 10 tons of cargo on a porche.
QNX is made for perticular tasks in a real-time environment, Linux is made for complex tasks with powerfull hardware(i mean more than a 15mhz chip and 256k ram).
You can't compare the two. An RTLinux is just a spin to make linux quicker and more responsive.

You must remember that the Duron has a much better bus under it than a celeron does. Even if you got it up to 133mhz FSB you STILL wouldn't have the performance of a duron..
Whether you belive in "God" or pagan beliefs or anything else, each religeon has at some point said that "what is made by man is ultimately flawed."
This means whatever we come up with, no matter how good it may be, is always going to be flawed. I get that from conventional religeons.
I myself believe that we don't yet have the ability to comprehend the truth. I think time is a demintion the same as up is, and for that matter speed itself is a demintion of its own. Each demintion has its limitations, and time and speed have that as well. I do realize that speed is related to at least one of the first 3 demintions but so is time. The faster you go, the more the demintions seem to come together. Modern physics says that if a chunk of matter were to reach the true speed of light it would be equal in mass the the universe itself, and that is how the light barier is intact. If something gets more massive the closer it gets to the speed if light, eventually it will be too massive to accellerate and would take more than the mass of the universe for fuel to go any faster.
Confused yet?,
thats my point, if we can't even figure out why certain things are how they are in the universe, then how are we going to figure out how the univers is made or controlled? Its easy to explain the "God" made everything but isn't that just the "easy" was of explaining it? here is the truth in it all. Any system that acts to interpret input and output by means of memory space, is an OS. If it had ANY hint of self control, then it was an OS. Heck, even the BIOS on your computer contains a small OS, how else would it interpret keyboard input and display it correctly on the screen?
I belive that the first OS was on some early IBM machines that preceded the 360. Not so much a user controlled OS, but an OS no less. I think all it did was direct input to the CPU in something like 256bytes of ram(no not 256k, 256b:) ).
I think that this MRAM could be great, it could be used as both storage and as system memory. Like those outrageously expensive SDRAM drives but cheaper and held the info after poweroff.
For example, i go buy a new athlon hammer in two years, say the.08 micron model in the 2.5-3Ghz range, and i go out and buy a "mass storage Device".
It would be great to just walk in and say, "OK, i need about 1.5Gigz of Random access and another 25Gigz for storage". My friendly non-commisioned BestBuy guy says "you should look at the new seagate drive at 50Gigz" and maybee even give me a pamflet on how to partition the drive so that i can have my Gig anda half of ram. All this with a device using MRAM so it is lightning fast and compatible with ATA-266 with and avarage seek time of.002ms, or would that be latency??
heres an idea, use the transmeta 5400 and use either BeIA or BeOS(same but different?) or a varient somewhere between the two. integrate the storage and ram like in WinCE devices. 100mhz sdram could be manufactured at.13micron to be light and more power efficient. use one of those new flexible organicplastic displays. any other periferal could be interfaced through USB or fireware(im not sure which would be best cause im a looser and don't stuff them, probly go with firewire for speed) this could include network, modem, harddrive, etc. put it all in a tiny little case and throw a touch screen over the display and you could have one tiny powerhouse.
let me explain why i pick what i pick. Be makes a strong fast OS without any legacy hangups. It can be recompiled and ported much eisier that Winbloat and has a much prittier, easier interface that linux+X11. maybe you could put built in 100tx networking but other that that everything should be external firewire. many devices could be "clipped" on the top or back of the case like a camera. you could do wireless video conferencing through a wireless lan hooked to a DSL/Cable/T1+ and have some serious batterylife. remeber the low power screen:). also, keyboards take power too, more power than you would think. as do mice, but touch pads dont take much at all.
