  1. Re:It's a deformed child, not a moral trophy on Down's Symptoms May Be Treatable In the Womb · · Score: 1

Using your logic (and the GP), we can also go on to destroy the parents of said deformed cells because of their likeliness to produce another set of deformed cells. It may sound like an extreme but it's also the next logical step. Sure, the next step could try to prevent said people from reproducing, but we all know that would never work seeing as the words "unwanted pregnancy" are all too common.

I'm all for birth control (pre-conception) but abortion never sits right with me. I also believe that there are a LOT of people who are far too stupid and/or irresponsible to be parents, and therefore should not be allowed to become them, but as I said that would never work. So it's always going to be an iffy situation. I hate to see kids suffering or in poverty. I also think that killing them off before they get a chance is wrong. If I could, I'd find them a home where they'd be loved and cared for.

So one way to look at it is 'population control' where everyone had better prove their worth to an arbitrary, human, and probably very corrupt board of overseers who picks if you're good enough to live or not. Another way to go would be to continue being a culture of compassion and mercy and do everything within our power to educate people so they quit making stupid decisions, make a difference, and contribute positively to society. Either method is a little far-fetched and extreme, but I'd rather prove my worth in a society that wants everyone to thrive, rather than the one that must regulate what gets to thrive.

I think what Hal is getting at is that since Oblivion is already ported, then Fallout 3 should be that much easier to port. Just get the same people on it and they should already know what they're doing. But 'should' is a relative term.

Yeah, the architectures are drastically different, but they've already got a working blueprint.

Yeah, I think I have 14 hours in the game. Full time work, school, girlfriend, family. Games are the very last priority... I don't think the word priority is even applicable at this point. LOL

And, FWIW, I feel that Fallout 3 is a great game, but I also never liked the first two (combat system) due to action points. I'm huge on strategy games, and Fallout 1&2 should have been right up my alley. But I just never liked the engine enough to play. Oh well. So, whether or not that is good for the Fallout legacy is for anyone to decide. Oh, and I use VATS rather often and like it, but I can freehand as well as long as the lighting permits. And I have it on 360.

Sure, people won't have that dollar menu anymore. Maybe they'll be forced to buy food with some degree of nourishment. I know I'd rather not have to pay a premium for real food.

Me: Some ass-hat broke into my car and stole my CD's and my sunglasses.
Friend: Well you shouldn't have left them in there.

We're letting criminals off the hook because we didn't prevent the crime (opt out, hide the CD's) and blaming those who are affected. It's almost safer to be a petty thief just because people are too lazy to go after you.

  6. Re:Advanced Bad & Summary on Charity Refuses Donation Because of D&D Connection · · Score: 1

If you run a charitable organization you generally are going to specifically recognize any donors of note. Specifically those that donate over X $'s. Ever been to an orchestral concert or even a play at an independent theater? The pamphlet or booklet they hand you at the door often contains lists of individual and organizational donors. These aren't advertisements, but they certainly are recognition.

For instance: Your target market is likely to attend a certain play, you donate $1000 to the production and hope that the target market sees your name (and they will) and thinks, "let's give those guys our business because they support a cause we like!".

CCF is no different. They give recognition to their biggest donors. They may have felt that it was bad PR for their target market to include GenCon or whatever on that list. They may have felt that GenCon's history with charity organizations (something about LucasArts) did not lend to the integrity of GenCon and thus they did not feel it was in their best interests to allow themselves to be endorsed in that way.

Either way it really doesn't matter. If the people who donated the money want CCF to have it they should get their refunds and donate DIRECTLY to CCF in memory of Gary Gygax.

  7. Re:Advanced Bad & Summary on Charity Refuses Donation Because of D&D Connection · · Score: 1

I've been involved with a lot of charity events and in a case where collected money can't be donated or used it usually comes down to one of these two actions. Whatever board of directors or persons in charge will either a) do complete refunds of the money (hoping that undocumented donations cover the cost) or b) they will find an alternative use for the money and advise all donors of their new decision with the option to 'opt out' and be refunded.

That might be the opposite of what she needs as she's hanging out with a very impersonal society. Maybe she needs a 'time in'. As in, require her community service work with chatty people. Course, I could be wrong.
