I truly appreciate the posts you made on this thread, I do.
But your homework is not going to dissappear, it will just become URGENT.
Take a break and get cracking!
I'm over 50, but still trying to complete a degree on telematics in the next year, so I know; homework sucks but if you don't get your nose in the grinder, it doesn't get done. Even if you know more about the subject that your professors, you still need to turn in good homework or they'll fail you.
Keep posting to enlighten us, poor ignorant souls, but don't give up on your homework, it will pay better!
Currently I use daily, a Chevrolet Tahoe 1995 with over 160,000 miles; without a fuss.
Yes, you can see me working on it a couple of times a month, but is is usually aestethic things, not power-train or engine problems.
And this one replaced a Mustang 1965 that through some unfortunate happenings, I managed to lose.
Of course, if you are refering to a Ford Pinto or any American Cars (except Jeep), yeah they suck.
But try some old Volkswagen cars (Cabriolet, Golf even the venerable Beetle) or some Ford (the F150 is rock-solid) or Chevrolet (like my Tahoe) and they are solid. Yes, the suck gas like there is no end to it, but they will not leave you stranded.
Same with the IBM M's, they are over-engineered so bad, they will outlast our civilization.
First, let me say that I have a deep admiration for your country and your countrymen. [Not so much for your countrywomen!:-)]
Now, for a moment, please forget that you are Swiss, or a bean-counter or an economist.
Who pays for the air you breath?
Right, it doesn't come from taxes; it comes from Nature, so it's free.
Why do you pay taxes? It is a serious question. Basically to pay for paving the streets, lightning the streets, providing basic education, etc.
Hang on one more second.Perhaps public services in your country are a little different, but the first reason for taxes is to pay for common services.
A second reason, is to spread the wealth. Yes, even capitalist countries such as the good ol' U.S. of A. does that. Take from the rich to give to the poor, minus a percentage to run the programs, of course! (I won't get into what is reasonable percentage and how much really is politicians creating jobs for supporters, etc.)
Now suppose that production of essentials such as food and power, was automatic, as automatic as the air you breath.
It won't happen tomorrow but it certainly is possible.
Would you still pay taxes?
Try to see a future as different from today, as today is from the 16th century.
I might be willing to contribute some amount of money towards fixing a bug or getting a feature, say in Thunderbird. No place for me.
My programming skills are less than brilliant, but I could write a good manual or contribute to one. No place for me.
Openhatch matches programmers to projects; it is a good initiative, but there are many of us with different resources/skills that could still contribute.
The problem with FOSS is that is run mostly by programmers who think they only trouble they have is getting more programmers...
We, the government, have decided to detain all Slashdot users with a uid greater than 500,000; please report to the nearest camp.
The treatment they received is besides the point; the point being they were American citizens, whose only crime was to be of children or grandchildren of Japanese inmigrants.
Yes, they were not exterminated but it was a racist action, and in that way, the two are comparable.
Now, think how much worse the treatment could have gotten if the war was lost or if it looked that way to the powers that be...
You won't get fat by eating only leaves of salad every day for your entire life no matter how fat your parents are.
Your contention was that eating leaves of salad you won't get fat, now you claim that if you eat enough you will. Make up your mind.
What you do with pigs and cows is to keep them in a pen (lack of exercise) and feed them lots (oversize me!), then they get fat eating greens and grain.
A penned calf takes 8-9 months to get to around a 1,000 pounds at which point you can sell it; a free range calf takes 15-16 months to reach that weight and it has little fat and a lot of muscle, thus the meat is not tender.
Same with humans with no exercise, anything you eat turns into fat because that's what the body does, any nutrient not spent is turned into fat for storage.
I truly hope that you never lose sight of your ideals.
I have worked for companies that while small had that human touch and as they grew they lost it.
When your boss or Finance or whoever wants to impress the shareholders with cost reductions, they start to slip, denying you the very tools needed to make a good product.
The more layers there are between the people producing the goods (physical or otherwise) and the shareholders, the greater the chances of stupid decisions that look good on paper ('Hey! We reduced costs 10%!') but damage the company in the long run.
See a good doctor. Lasik is not for everyone and as they say, your millage may vary.
I finally decided to see a doctor about it and ended up with intraocular lenses, because I was developing cataracts. Shitty eyes, near-sighted, astigmatism, far-sighted (from age) and then cataracts.
I have worn glasses for more than 40 years so I decided the knife was worth it, if I could regain some vision even if I had to still use glasses; now I can see far without trouble but still have to get the reading glasses on small print, but I CAN SEE
See a doctor, it is worth it. You can't imagine how beautiful it is to wake up, open your eyes and see!
Thanks for explaining the unusual behavior over a legitimate question; I thought that perhaps you guys were dejected over Romney not winning or FoxConn not opening a factory in the U.S. or some such:->.
As pointed out by tragedy above, the IRS holds that any earnings by an American citizen are taxable, regardless of where they were made.
There is a mechanism provided to account for taxes paid to the government of the country you are working in, but (there is always a but) that country has to have signed a tax treaty with U.S.
I know of two people (one spent 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, the other 20 years in the U.S. Navy) who have renounced their U.S. citizenship over taxes, because after retiring they decided to move to a country that doesn't have a tax treaty with the U.S.
You see, individuals have a hard time over money earned outside the U.S., corporations get to keep it.
Same here, I used to work for a group of companies incorporated in Cayman, after the OCDE deal, they moved to Belize; there is an economic development zone that is basically a tax-haven.
Actually, one of the partners renounced his U.S. citizenship because of taxes and acquired the belizian (sp?) nationality...
Wherever you go, people just don't want to pay taxes...
[Citation needed] Indeed, you say
but your argument is precisely a "make believe scenario"
"A terrorist with a dirty bomb." You mean like the Weapons of Mass Destruction that Saddam was just about to use?
Please, grow up!

Perhaps you need to name a brand/model.

Amen to that brother!
Where I work we just got like 20 Avenger and 10 Challengers...
The Avenger wants to take off at 100 MPH, they shake as much as a Fokker on take off..
The Challengers are a bit better but still no competition for an old Thunderbird... Even the old models without traction control.
SAMANTHA!
IT'S PAST YOUR BEDTIME..
GET OFF THE COMPUTER NOW!
Filler to get past the stupid lameness filter, of course I'm yelling; it's a joke, for Christ's sake

What!? 4 + years is not enough to train someone to go to Mars?
Come on, I've been to many places in Mexico and most Caribbean islands, I'm ready to go to Mars tomorrow!
I mean, if one can survive those trips, going to Mars is walk in the park...
Return? Who the hell wants to get back to this shithole?
Mars or bust!
Not quite what is needed.

Now, pay attention. London cabbies are NOT born with expanded gray matter. They are "normal" people, become cabbies, get expanded gray matter.
Now, can your brain rewire itself?
Research suggests that yes, it can.

You must be European; in America POS does not translate into "poor piece of software", it means "poor piece of shit"
Hope you're enlightened now
Amen to that brother

You are entirely WRONG.
I have raised cattle and pigs, they eat only greens and grains and they do get FAT.
And don't tell me it doesn't apply because we're humans and they are animals; we are animals and actually pigs are used for medical research.

I think the first post seriously contaminated the discussion.
I, for one, but have loved to read the opinion of people actually using such software and their experience with it.
I have no need for VM, but I think the opinion of those using it, in many different settings, is much more valuable that any wiki entry or manual.
Perhaps your time would have better spent giving us some information instead of a rant?

I undid many moderations to inform you, so appreciate it.
The Cayman Islands have signed enough tax-treaties to get into the "white list" of the OCDE. Google it or just read this.
Depending on your nationality and preferences, today you go to Singapore, Belize, Holland or Panama.
You insensitive clod!
Think of my children... And they are not even American citizens...

Slightly off-topic... But I haven't been able to find good answers.
Anybody has a link to an authoritative source about what happens to e-books if the publisher/seller goes out of business?
Are there any safeguards that will prevent the publisher/seller from pulling out an e-book already sold and installed in my reader?
Finally, are the e-books complete editions or are they abbreviated?
Thanks
