The site even updated the article but the author still insists it's Google's feature and doesn't even really acknowledge that it was an extension doing it.

  2. Kindle for entertainment, dead trees for business. Either for textbooks or anything technical paper is the way to go. You can get paper dirty and wet and not have to worry about it not working, but if I'm on the toilet or on the train I prefer to use my Kindle (not for wiping).

  3. Okay so the judgement is made. What can the EU do to enforce their decision? Can Apple appeal? I'm sure the bribes to guarantee a favorable ruling is less than 14 billion so when can we expect them to come out on top?

In the TechCrunch article in TFA there are a couple commenters pointing out that it was the Opera Browser part of the company that was sold. Opera Software still owns SurfEasy and is independent of the browser.

I had the same concern as well, and the Wikipedia page for Opera Software doesn't mention the Chinese acquisition.

Chances are these guys will pawn them or sell them on the street. If they had half a brain they would never use them and once the money has changed hands they don't have to worry about whether they have been blacklisted or not.

  20. SubjectIsSubject on Surveillance Cameras Sold On Amazon Found Infected With Malware (zdnet.com) · · Score: 1

Funny enough, I was just looking around Amazon Canada for a cheap IP camera. There are lots of $40-$50 cameras and not a single one comes from a company I've ever heard of and they all seem to require some sort of account to view the stream. I just want one I can watch from my laptop with only local access.

I remembered about hearing about sketchy IoT devices, especially cameras and it's just not worth the risks. Most have no reviews or 1 or 2 reviews from someone with very poor English (hmmmm).
Even the "brand name" ones seem pretty sketchy and I don't really trust DLINK anymore than Foscam or JOOAN, whoever they are.

I could just be clever and fabricoble one from an Raspberri Pi or an Arduino or something but that's still not really worth the cost + time.

  21. This is the closest you'll get to Year of the Linux Desktop. Is it everything you'd imagined?

  22. My parents get at least 2-3 robocalls a day either about winning a flight on WestJet or being hunted by the RCMP for the CRA for backtaxes. Sometimes they'll just spoof their home phone. Pretty weird getting a phone call from yourself. One called under "Unknown Name", then called back a few minutes later with the same number under "Anonymous".

My grandma gets the calls and she usually knows better for she has alzheimers and lapses in judgement. So we're worried that one day she'll give out some personal information and then forget the second she hangs up.
She also got hit by a ransomware attack on her computer, which wasn't too bad because her laptop is just a Facebook machine. Set her up with Linux Mint and there have been no problems.
Before I cancelled my phone plan I was getting at least a robocall a week and it was getting worse.

That's actually really good timing. I was wanting to try Google Cardboard but gave up because all the kits are $20+. At least I'll get a chance to try it with the free one. It looks like it has PORNHUB on the front so that won't be for showing my friends and family.

  25. SubjectIsSubject on Peter Jackson and JJ Abrams 'Back' Sean Parker's Screening Room (variety.com) · · Score: 1

Well $50 isn't that bad if you plan on having friends over to watch it together instead of going to the cinema. I don't see how they can make real money on it because most people are tired of shelling out $15+ just to go see the movie so I doubt they'll pay $50 just for the sake of staying in.

On the other hand, at least pirates will be able to a good rip on day one to enjoy at home.
I don't see this really coming to fruition because of that.
