My grandma accidentally updated to Windows 10 from 7 because of their shifty practises. My dad called me to say that everything on my grandmas computer "was different" and no one had changed everything.
She has mild alzheimer's and forgets short-term so we can have the same conversation 3-4 times in an hour (which gives you lots of time to prepare an answer), so she forgot she had clicked okay when Windows Update had asked to upgrade. I'm glad I'd gone around when I had because there was only a week left before the change was irreversible. Thanks for the timebomb, douchebags
I would have left it. She does nothing on the computer besides Facebook and Solitaire but the performance was awful. All these new features and crap were beyond her realm. I downgraded her and found a tool that hides/deletes all the Windows 10 update crap so it wouldn't happen again.

She got hit by ransomware last week despite only using Facebook. I reckon it was one of those inescapable ads that warn you you're infected then proceed to catch you in a "Ok/Cancel" loop where Cancel just opens a new prompt.

She has nothing on that computer so I just nuked the drive and stuck Linux Mint on there and with some themes and such she can't tell the difference.
Year of the Linux Desktop amiright?

  10. Stupid Youtube on Fine Brothers File For Trademark On Word "React" · · Score: 4, Insightful

The problem is content producers on Youtube are actually losing money because their title has the word "REACT" in it and the contentID that automates detection of infringing videos are tagging these videos so the creators are losing their ad revenue and getting strikes against their account.
Another problem is that these guys have millions of subscribers so their a big revenue stream for Youtube so they have of course sided with the Fine Brothers.
The Fine Brothers didn't create this kind of content. They are nowhere near the first to use it but they are still basically taking ownership of other people's ideas.

I've subscribed to uploaders who've had these problems and Youtube is notoriously difficult to deal with because you have to prove you're not stealing, instead of the accuser having to make a proper case.

Just today I saw a video of a quad-copter being attacked by a hawk, and it was uploaded by the original owner but the video was flagged by some Korean news agency as theirs even though they had no relation to the video aside from using it in their broadcast. The big stinker is that the uploader was donating the ad revenue to a charity and so they've lost out on a couple grand already.
The system Youtube is using is very flawed but they don't seem to care about the grief and frustration they are causing users.

The most satisfying thing is a live stream of the Fine Bros current number of subscribers and the number just kept plummeting by 20-30 every few seconds.

You can't just go on about something you haven't even told us about yet.

It's gender discrimination the editor was talking about by the way. You have to be clear in these situations because every special snowflake is being "discriminated against" in some way either because the way someone fucking sits or because someone doesn't automatically know they are a genderfluid, cross horse/dragonkin from Planet Zarblox X and are only attracted to slightly rounded triangles.
It's a good thing that problems like this are being tackled, but nowadays I'm always skeptic when people start trying to make a deal of it because most of the time it's someone being over sensitive because they wore cat ears and a tail to a job interview and yell "DISCRIMINATION" or "CHECK YOUR PRIVILEGE" when they don't get the job.
That's what SJW's have done to actual battles for equality: they've bastardized it and made it less than it actually is by yelling louder than the people who experience the ass slaps or slurs or unprofessional jokes.

  24. Well someone is a bit high and mighty, aren't they? Whatever the reasoning, these people are in the right. I live in southern Ontario and we have wind turbines dotted all over the landscape. I don't mind them. I actually like the way they look. I do however dislike the fact that in the years that they've been installing the turbines, hydro costs have only gone up. Hydro rates are at an all-time high here even though we were promised time and time again that the rates would go down substantially while "healing" the environment.
The only thing those turbines generate are profits for the companies and the farmers who let them build on their land. Now not to mention the fact we're losing good farm-able land to these turbines, but they generate such a massive amount of CO2 in their construction and transport that they are essentially useless. They generate too little power and rarely ever do I see more than a couple going at a time.

Hey, as long as they tell you it's good for the environment you can sleep easy while ignoring all the waste these things do in fact create, and they benefit nobody but the companies and the landowners.

The same is true of solar panels. Aside from the landowners, as most have to pay for their own. Around here they are older, expensive, and inefficient static models that don't do anything more than say "I can afford carbon credits so I'm able to pollute guilt-free." So pick on the little rural bumpkins if you'd like, editor, but they are doing more to realistically protect the environment than most people in the Church of Climate Change.

You can hang out up there on your high-horse all you want. I've got some tires to burn.
