No problem. Even running the orrery, with the little light bulb for the sun, showing him that all the moon gets bathed in light, as it rotates and revolves, he didn't get it. Or, he realized some smart ass 14 year old had just shown him up.

Got into a verbal with Earth science teacher, in 9th grade (he was also wrestling coach). He insisted that one side of the moon was always dark. I even used the orrery to show that the 'darkside' of the moon also gets light. Man, he didn't like that one. Who knew a science geek could get a D in Earth Science? /in gym, got paired up with kid on the wrestling team. Ouch!

There was at least one hero at VT. He wasn't able to take down the gunman but he did save a bunch of his student's lives.

A representative of Romanian President Traian Basescu gave a national medal in Israel on Friday to the family of a Romanian-born Virginia Tech professor who saved his students from a rampaging gunman Monday.

Witnesses to Monday's shooting said Librescu blocked the door to his classroom with his body so students could escape the assailant by jumping out windows. The 76-year-old professor was shot to death in the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history - which coincided with Holocaust Remembrance Day - and became one of 32 victims of gunman Cho Seung-Hui.

"He gave his life for his students," Brooklyn Assemblyman Dov Hikind told mourners at a Brooklyn funeral home during a memorial service Wednesday. "It is the ultimate sacrifice, and the ultimate goodness, after all that he went through in his life."

I heard another professor (younger guy with glasses) did something similar. So, not aggressive heroes but damned brave.

It used to be that primary votes were limited to the actual attendants at the national primary 'parties', with those attendees chosen by state party officials. The average voter had very little say in which candidates were run at the national level. Really was more of an 'old boys' network back then, even more so than before. 'Course, now, we have all the damn gerrymandering in place, that pretty much defines what party gets to represent what district. 'Comes down to a bunch of people in control trying to lock down change as society gets more informed and able to ferret out more information on who's running things. You're basic kleptocracy trying to stay on top of a restless bull.

Might want to look into other fields that require similar problem solving. One thing that's struck myself, as wife and I build our new house, is how interesting system wise a house is. Lots of different interlocking functions and constraints. Hell, just putting the kitchen together is kinda' cool. I'm seriously thinking about setting up a customer cabinet/furniture shop over the next ten years, so I'll be ready for my retirement job.
