I suppose the part I put in about having to carry around an external monitor and a really long extension cord didn't set off your sarcasm detectors? Will have to work harder next time I try to goof in an Apple story.
less than $200. Ok, it won't have a nice shiny back to get all scratched up or a small color lcd screen built in (will need external monitor and really long power cable) but I won't be paying any Apple tax!
Apple makes money by selling machines, not software. They are not going to stop doing this just because they're changing one chip on their mother boards. OS X will only run on Apple Macs, without some serious hacking. This hacking will likely be difficult enough that people who would buy a Mac anyways will still buy a Mac. Hardware monkeys may be able to get it working on commodity hardware but it'll likely be kinda' flakey.
What if death is just a doorway to paradise. Society could be sending hackers to a place with 777 virgins for each one. 'Course, I don't think the sex of the virgins need be specified.

While all these places are geared towards Macs, they also carry lots of parts that fit both PC and Mac. Never had any problems with them, after using them for 6-8 years now.
Wagon wheels! Why we had to have rows of goats running past each other, generating enough static electricity just to fry a RAM chip. Forget even getting to single user mode.
Technically, I think it could be done but socially, that's another thing. The very freedom of Linux makes it hard to get everyone on board for something as fluid as a GUI. The hardest people would be the ones that don't really see any real difference in how a GUI operates, as long as their app does what they want it to do. To them, worrying about the hows and whys of GUI just don't impinge on their radar.
Apple sells expensive machines. They'll always be more expensive than a Lindows box. Two different market segments. Linux is much more adaptable too. I expect there will be solid state 'internet devices' that run Linux and sell for around $100 in the next few years. Will be fine for Mom/Grandma users and anyplace you just want an inexpensive connection to the web (iPotty).
My first PC was 33MHz and cost $2300.00. I still have it as it has never had anything other than software problems. It's maxed at 136MB RAM, with a 4GB HD. I can also use the case as a step stool. The thing weighs about 40lbs and is solid. Cool!
My second brand new Mac that I bought was a Power Computing Power Tower Pro 180. Sweet machine and $800 less than comparable Apple. This from a guy that's only used Macs.
"Hmmm...cute Mac Mini for $600 or not so cute Dell for $400...hmmm..."
...outa' icecream! Sure, I'll only be able to use it in a walk in freezer, but hanging out someplace with frozen carcasses is a lot cooler than my mom's basement.
There was that flap about Dr. Laura a few years ago, when some ex-boyfriend of hers made public some pics from her college years. D'oh!
And if the data is digital, fu-ged-aboud-it. Nothing will ever really vanash. In some hard drive, we'll be able to find just about anything that ever made it out on the web.
Now if I can just find that term paper I did about Laurie Anderson, that I posted to a fan site back in '94. I've lost my copy but I've found references to it here and there. I know it's out there somehwere!
Please, no. No one needs SG1/ . That would be wrong. Unless it's about chicks. Like the smart one and her alternate timeline geek persona. That would be hot.
What I'm saying is that, if Apple were to make an x86 based computer, they'd tie the OS in so that you couldn't run it on any old x86 box out there. Hell, you can't even run current OS X on anything other than Apple PPC gear now. IBM makes PPC CHRP boards but Apple never made an installer/OS that would run on them. As for using Intel DRM, seems like a perfect use of it, if you want to control hardware/software the way Apple does.

...Throg, the Movie? Makes Plan 9 look like a Paul Verhoeven flick.

I just purchased a 7.1 receiver about 1/2 an hour ago. I'm such a behind-the-times loser. Hope I don't lose my slashdot number.
If any kind soul wants to saddle me with these books, I really wouldn't mind.

All these moving arms and gears and spinning disks. Gah! Might as well have steam powered computers.
Can't wait for solid state!

Herding cats. How do you get all developers to hold to one form of GUI madness?

I've used this mouse for a year and it's been great.
Unless a blog has pictures of cute kittens, it's worthless.

User Friendly sucks and I know. I've been reading it every day for the last 5 years or so. Ya' want real entertainment, check out Schlock Mercenary.
Peter Jackson's probably behind this, so the Double Secret Probation Lord of the Rings can be sold on one disk.

That's still more miles/gallon than my '70 Impala.
