So you don't consider it "poverty" unless people are starving? I assume that MSP stands for Minneapolis/St. Paul, but I have not been to that city. However, I can tell you that I see homeless people every day here in Chicago and they generally don't seem very happy. Bought some homeless guy a coffee last weekend and noticed he had about 4 teeth in his mouth. (By the way, I've seen some stats that put the number of people in my neighborhood living at or below the poverty level as high as 40%)

Nobody is forced to run a web site. I used to run a small site, and happily paid out of pocket for that service. Problem is, some people have come to regard the web as a cash cow, as if they should earn money just for people visiting their site. Suck it up, if a company's business model relies on annoying people it probably won't be effective in the long run.

Ah yes, you've found me out. I like to slap "Type-R" stickers on my computer case, and run Gentoo for that extra 1% speed boost. But if you can look past your Opera zealotry, you'll see that I didn't actually say anything bad about the browser. If it works for you then great, keep using it.

I don't regard my brower as a "toy to play with." The Web Developer Toolbar is a critical tool for my work. I would go insane without the FlashBlock extension. BugMeNot is a huge convenience.

Sure, it takes a little effort to seek out and install these things, but there are advantages to this system. (such as upgrading extensions without having to upgrade the entire browser)

I like Opera and all, but the F12 menu really isn't comparable to the infinitely flexible Gecko plugin system. And while it's nice to have those F12 options, I would like to see a little finer control, like Firefox's advanced Javascript and Cookie settings. It happens. I once accidentaly typed an extra space when deleting core files on a production system:

    rm -r * core
Goodbye to a full day of work.. Of course, now that I am more experienced with *nix systems, I see that there were several issues with the system configuration:
    • The account we used for testing was equivalant to root (sound familiar?)
    • The system should have had core dumps disabled, no reason for that on a production system
    • The data files should have been placed in a separate directory, like /var, instead of just using the current directory.
