PHP has no "printLine" function. Neither does Perl, and those are the only languages (that I'm aware of) that use a "$" to denote variables. I think the grandparent is confused.:)
..you could substitute just about any act here that is done by consenting adults in the privacy of their own home, yet is subject to criminal prosecution (i.e. sodomy).
Actually, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that sodomy laws were unconstitutional a couple of years ago. But I agree with your main point.
I've talked to a number of people that thought the Mozilla suite has a clunky interface from 10-15 years ago (it still looked like Netscape 4).
Why the MoFo continues to ship Mozilla with the horribly outdated and Netscape-ish default theme boggles the mind. The Modern theme is better, but still not nearly as nice looking as the Firefox default.
That said, there are a couple of reasons (besides the default theme) for which I prefer Firefox:
The browser seems to load faster
Browser extensions are handled better, in general the browser seems more extensible
Assuming XP hasn't been EOL'd by the time WinFS is released (or that it ever is). This is just yet another example of how many companies, Microsoft in particular, will pre-announce features to distract attention from a competing product.
It seems that lately, MS has stepped up the tempo on their marketing campaigns: WinFS, Longhorn, etc. The question I'm interested in is: What competitor are they afraid of?
C# is clearly the preferred language under ASP.NET so "to a lesser extent" is actually no extent at all
What about the numerous examples in Microsoft's documentation that only show the VB way to accomplish something? Thankfully, it's been awhile since I've had to look anything up on their site, so maybe they've corrected that issue. (As an aside, I generally find their documentation overly complicated, as if the writer were being paid based on the complexity of the example, not it's clarity.)
I think the fact that you even have language options is A Good Thing.
Language options are nice. Platform options are even better.
I once outsourced an ASP 3.0 job. It came back in server side javascript. Yeah, I guess you *can* write ASP in javascript, but nobody does.
Obviously someone does. But I understand your point. Much as Microsofties like to bleat that ASP supports more than just VBScript, that's really the only language which is widely supported under it (and to a lesser extent, under ASP.NET). And by that, I don't mean that other languages don't necessarily work, but the documentation and support resources are biased towards VB.
Nest a while, a for, a case, and an if statement together in VB and in C# and you will immediately see which is easier to figure out.
That depends on what you're used to working with. I'll take the C-style implementation any day, preferrably with proper indendation. Usually whenever I'm asked to maintain some BASIC code, not only is it a flow control nightmare, but the code indentation/formatting is pratically nonexistent. Badly written code is hard to read in any language.
It makes me feel dirty whenever I'm forced to work with a BASIC-variant. At the risk of sounding like a dork, it's like taking an alignment hit in AD&D, while decreasing my ability to code in any other language.. truly evil.
Or like my roommate, who has struggled with his laptop's wireless driver for two weeks after having to re-install XP. And he's fairly knowledgable for a Windows user.
I had this problem with the debit card reader at a Best Buy today. They use a crummy touch interface instead of actual keys, which failed to register some of the "keypresses" for my PIN.
So I hit clear, and tried to re-enter the number. When I went to do this, it doesn't register anything. Press, press, press, press, press. Still nothing. I ask the cashier, she shrugs. Suddenly, all the keypresses appear. So we rang it up as a credit card sale. What a POS that POS system is..
Probably because an inordinate number of subscribers are only interested in seeing 3D shooters like Counter-Strike 2 supported. That's one reason why I no longer have a WineX/Cedega subscription -- the other is that I simply have a waning interest in computer games.
Agreed, I'm not so opposed to the core concepts of Christianity (temperance, love, etc), or the social club aspects, but all the superstitious claptrap churns my stomach. I'm often tempted to reply to the proselytizers with something like "I'm glad you enjoy your cult, but please keep it to yourself."
Religion must be the only profession where the phrase "you're not expected to understand," is a valid answer for critical questions. Well, religion and IT. Sometimes, they don't seem so different.;)
That particular quote is indeed quite similar to a quote from Gollum/Smeagol, but Zathras was almost entirely unlike that character. B5 really is worth checking out, at least the first four seasons. It's still one of the few science fiction shows I've seen which use time travel as a plot device, and do not screw it up.
Is that emerge sync emerge -uD world going to make anything change, ever? If so, gentoo is probably a bad idea.
Aye, that would be a very bad idea. USE flags for packages change over time, Portage gets updated, etc-update needs to be run, decisions need to be made. Sure you could probably hack together a self-updating Gentoo box, but it would eventually self-destruct.
If you need a Linux distro that noobs can easily maintain, I would recommend Fedora. Just tell your users to click on the flashing red button in the toolbar, click next a few times, and the system will be kept up to date.
There are zealots of all flavors; Mac, Microsoft, OSS, etc. Let's not make the mistake of labelling *all* users or fans of a particular techology as zealots, when usually it's just a few outspoken individuals. And I think we should also try to recognize the "zealots among us".. I.E. if you're a fan of Linux, you probably don't tend to pay much attention to a rabid pro-Linux advocate. (or Microsoft, or Apple, or..)

Or even "friends with benefits," seeing how those companies are in bed with Linux to some extent or another. That chubby penguin gets around. ;)
Another Dr Who theme cover (kind of) is in the Pink Floyd song _One of These Days_.

But the larger issue is that Windows is intentionally crippled in order to extract larger licensing fees.
*cough* terminal server *cough*
I can compile a kernel w/ modules in about 20 minutes on this AMD 2600+. But I had to leave my computer compiling overnight to emerge OOo..
How is it relevant? I cannot think of a more fitting toy for Carly than a Hello Kitty vibrator..

That makes no sense at all, why would God create either imperfect animals
Why would God(tm) create an imperfect cosmos? It makes no logical sense, much like organized religion.
But Frodo lives..

Zathras is used to being beast of burden to other people's needs. Very sad life. Probably have very sad death. But, at least there is symmetry.
