I too loved his _Smoke Ring_ series. (and Ringworld, before Throne) Sounds like Niven's back in his game with this latest novel. I wonder if it's too much to hope for a return to the world of the Admiralty, CARM's and Integral Trees..
I stopped watching the Tolkien Trilogy after the second movie.
Can't say as I blame you. It was hard to stay enthusiastic about the films after seeing Aragorn fall off a cliff, Faramir hauling Sam and Frodo to Osgiliath, then Frodo trying to hand the Ring to a Nazgul. ROTK had it's share of plot changes too. (cutting the final showdown between Gandalf and Saruman was criminal -- but at least it will (allegedly) be in the extended edition) I find it helps to think of it as, "Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings", not the canonical version.
There was a little robot who swallowed a fly. I don't know why she swallowed a fly. I guess she'll fry.

There was a little robot who swallowed a bird. How absurd! To swallow a bird! She swallowed the bird to catch the spider That wiggled and jiggled and tickled insider her. She swallowed the spider to catch the fly. I don't know why she swallowed a fly. I guess she'll fry.
There was a little robot who swallowed a cat. Imagine that! She swallowed a cat. She swallowed the cat to catch the bird. Wasn't it determined that the anthrax originated in our own (US) military biolabs? Isn't it a strange coincidence how the first person killed in the anthrax attacks was a nosy reporter who had just published an embarassing photo of Bush's daughter?
In other news, OJ continues his search for, "the real killers"..
Slower in what context? Gnome vs KDE vs the Windows DE? If you want a faster destop, you can use Fluxbox, XFCE, etc. A heavyweight DE takes serious resources, if you wanna play, you gotta pay.
I partially agree with your statement about not needing to tweak services, when I installed FC2 recently there was a boatload of unnecessary services (which are part of the base install) running by default. On the other hand, if you choose to install a server (Apache, Postfix, etc) running the service by default is only logical. Hey, if you didn't want to run it, why did you install it?:)
I interned at a radio station, and we didn't add any new music for a month over the summer, just because there was nothing *new* tearin' up the charts.
That's a big part of the problem right there. How are people going to get exposed to new music, if radio stations only play what's "tearin' up the charts"?
What's funny is when these compilations are rereleased, and sometimes the company which currently owns the distribution rights can't find an original copy of the game. There have been a few cases where the publisher decided to use a ROM off an abandonware site, because that was the only available solution!
I spent the weekend at a friend's house. He's a sysadmin for a large company, and they have a lot (hundreds) of Windows servers. Every time a server is rebooted, his pager rings. Needless to say, his pager rang so much over the weekend, it simply became part of the background noise.. so no, who would really notice one more reboot? (at least in that circumstance)
did you manage to solve the font issue for Starcraft in BattleNet
I only play the single player game, and have never tried BattleNet. Sorry.
why arent you giving out your specs (hw and sw) and give us some hints how you installed them?
HW: Athlon 2600+, 512 MB DDR 233, NVidia GF4280 (128 MB), 120 GB Seagate, Shuttle MB w/Nforce2 chipset.
SW: Mandrake 9.1 w/custom 2.6.7 kernel, WineX 3.2.1. I am NOT using Point2Play. And my WineX config files are barely edited.
The biggest tips I can give you, are running the game from the installed directory via shell script (write a simple shell script that 'cd's to the game dir, then runs 'winex3 gamename.exe'), and tweaking the config files for the game (e.g. baldur.ini) to get the most features/performance out of the game. It's been so long since I installed these games, I don't really remember the specifics, but pretty much everything is from the Transgaming message boards. (They recently moved to a new forum, however the old content is still available on transgaming.com.) Oh, and making sure your games are patched/no-cd cracked helps too.
Since the article is slashdotted, here's a list of games that I run successfully under WineX 3.2.1 (not even the current version):
Age of Empires II
Icewind Dale
GTA 3
GTA: Vice City
Baldur's Gate II
Diablo II
Starcraft
Warcraft II BNE
Fallout II
Max Payne
Thief (Gold)
Thief II
Deus Ex
Grim Fandango
Not all of these work perfectly; for example BGII network play is not available. However, for the most part these are totally playable and sometimes even run better than the same games running under Windows. I really wish Transgaming would put more effort into supporting older games, but I guess more gamers want to play Counter Strike 2, not Diablo I.
I had the same problem when moving from Mozilla 1.6 w/ 'Flash Click to View' installed to Firefox. Try deleting (or renaming) the UserContent.css file in the ~/.mozilla/default/$RANDOM.slt/chrome directory.
Granted, it's been some time since I've seen the original trilogy, but wasn't it a big deal for the Falcon to do "lightspeed"? I don't remember them specifically saying they have warp drive/hyperspace technology. I guess you could make a case that it's implied..
But this does show the problem with conventional space travel: even if we had craft capable of light speed, it would still take 5 years to journey to the nearest star system. (Alpha Centauri)
Because it doesn't make sense considering the "big picture" and backstory we've seen so far. Think about it: the Sith Emperor has been destroyed and the Empire has sustained a critical blow. Is it more appropriate to end with Ewoks dancing on some moon, or shots of people celebrating on many planets?
And to completely ruin Star Wars, think about this:
Most star systems are light years apart. (I.E. the distance light travels in a year). Now, considering this fact, how is it possible for these folks in a galaxy far far away to actually visit different star systems, moving at only light speed?

As another data point, the place I'm currently contracting with has Debian on some of their servers. And they're a multinational.
Maybe Oracle will buy PeopleSoft and transition all users to their own platform.
/I can dream, can't I?
What about the ring around Uranus?
:zing:
Hmm, you may be on to something there.
(Glances over at 'The C Programming Language' and 'Learning Perl', both < 1" thick. Then the 800-page, 2" thick 'Learning Java'. Ouch.)
But Whitespace takes only three..
the anthrax killer never found

I had (and still have) the Coleco clone of the 2600, the Gemini. Haven't fired it up for awhile, but it's still ready to go with about 80 games. :)

I think there's an 'El Burrito' near my apartment. Have to ask them for their bootable CDROM special!

What about the Department of State? Could you DOS DOS if they ran DOS?
