That's weird, I would have thought MDK 10 would be more up-to-date regarding the Gimp. But I'm not surprised at the difficulty of the attempted upgrade -- The Gimp is unusual for an application, in that it's libraries are the basis of an entire desktop manager (GTK). For a GTK 1.x based distro, installing Gimp 2.0 would require installing GTK 2 alongside GTK 1, then compiling the Gimp from source with a configure option pointing out the GTK 2 directory.. in theory at least. There may be a better way. But upgrading from Gimp 1.x to 2.0 is definitely a non-trivial project for a Linux newbie.
Mandrake 10.0 download edition doesn't come with The GIMP? (Or just not GIMP 2.0?)
Anyway, I wouldn't be too critical of the free download edition, because that doesn't contain the plethora of packages you get with Mandrake PowerPack, SuSE professional, etc. Also, there's a very different paradigm between Windows and Linux software installation that many switchers need to get used to; Windows users are used to getting a bare OS with no extra packages, and aquiring extra software separately. Most Linux distros come with just about any software you need, and it can be installed by the distro's package manager.
Actually, text messaging finally seems to be catching on here (at least in Chicago). I was out at the bars last night and there were many more people sending text messages than trying to carry on a cellphone conversation over the din..
Depends on the industry. It's not like automaking (for instance) which requires huge investments in raw materials and other resources. It's possible for small software shops to have just as good products as the big players. And, small shops are more agile than an 800lb behemoth.
I don't believe this technology is scalable as an advertising platform. It's one thing to display a static message via CSS layers. It's quite another to display rotating ad banners. Sure, it could be done (probably using server side code), but it's not nearly as simple as popping open a window and loading a random image off an ad server. And that's a good thing.:)
Not to mention that Mac IE is a lame duck which will have no more updates. On my personal sites, I code as though IE doesn't exist. At work, unfortunately, I have to make things compatible with IE's bugs. Seems like every other day, I find another subtle way that IE breaks W3C standards. In my opinion, MS needs to scrap the current IE codebase and start over.
The FCC would never tolerate an old-line phone company selling a service that lets people lie to caller ID... why are they letting VoIP companies do it?
Probably because the FCC doesn't regulate VoIP. RTFA
I think there's some confusion here between running Knoppix from the CD, and installing it to a HDD. I agree that it should be possible to copy the Knoppix ISO onto a 1GB device, then mount it using a loopback. But this would give you the equivalant of running it from CD (read only), which is quite different from installing the distro. If you install Knoppix to a HDD, it will take up over 1.4 GB with all packages.
Cool. I installed a version of Knoppix on a P166/128MB/1.2GB HDD some time ago, and it runs quite nicely (although I spent an evening trimming down the packages to fit on that small HDD)
Does Solaris x86 work on the AMD 64 platform? The common element of the comparison was the hardware platform.

How 'bout Soylent Green energy drinks?
Slashdot, bringing you news 2 days after it appears on Fark.com..
Spiderman 2, with a dad in the next row back explaining the movie in blow-by-blow detail to his wee ones.. annoying, yes. Still a great movie tho.
Hah, I'll see your 22mbps cello, and raise a 3Mbps electric guitar..
I'm convinced that software patents exist soley to help the 800lb gorillas remain 800lb gorillas, but yes, that does give them an advantage.

That must be a roomy case..
Yeah, I suppose you're right. This arms race will continue to escalate.

Can the "guy in a room" theory apply to an entire company?

Yes! You can also pratice shooting humans and slow/near animals.
Children must be protected from the terrible secret of space. Do you have stairs in your house?
Oh yeah?
Who needs 3rd party libs with PHP? Not me, and a substantial part of my paying job is working with Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP.
What part of 'compressed filesystem' do you not understand?
