    the catch, of course, is defining "moderation". For most people, lacking a real definition, it winds up working out as "what I'm used to".

  3. No, not compressing UV radiation, compressing much of the EM spectrum (like, the block from 1cm to 10nm) into the visible range (700nm to 400nm). Mapping, or converting, if you would like a more apt word.

    I want those too, though I'd be happy enough with goggles.

    I think what he's pointing out is that your stated principle is very absolute, and applied as such even in significantly different situations may have issues, and perhaps a bit more nuance and situational awareness is called for.

    My take on your statement is that we appear to need to go ahead and start hanging bad drivers.

    It seems to me unlikely that the power company is going to let you make money through arbitrage; that would be coming directly out of their profits. The best I would expect would be that you can lower your bills to connection fee + zero net usage + taxes and fees.

    they're also pretty visible (kind of the point) and (assumed in this thread) detectable with automated systems so using them is just begging to get busted. I mean, even if you avoid the cops directly seeing you, someone's going to pull the footage from one of the automated cars you brushed to the side and passed and turn your license plate number over.

  10. It really depends what Alexander Roshal thinks "in separate form" means. So far I'm not aware of him claiming that a compiled binary is a form of source code, but I'm sure enough of a case could be made to take it to court if he wanted to.

    he's saying _current_ standards will not be weakened, but _strengthening_ of standards will be delayed. Basically the difference between "slowing down" and "not accelerating"

    while I agree that's a lesson that needs to be learned, it might be more effective to teach them in another way when they're actually alert.

    those two statements are not the same. The folks making money off the silly cat videos are the ones with massive server farms, not the ones with the cats.

    you mean you'd specifically throttle fast.com, right? Otherwise you're just making it really blatant that you're treating netflix traffic differently...

  21. given how many lawyers are in congress, that seems surprising. Perhaps the large number of lower level politicians (city council, mayor, etc) makes the percentage lower. I wonder if there's a way to do a weighted average by power level?

    It is _a_ problem. _The_ problem is that for some reason, kids are deciding it would be nifty to kill a bunch of other kids. More generally, people are deciding it would be nice if a bunch of other people were dead. Removing guns is a bandaid - it's a useful step in reducing the ongoing impact of the issue, but it does not address the root of the issue.
