EA manages to get our dollars purely voluntarily, even in light of all that negative press.

  13. Re:As a LOTRO player on Ask Slashdot: MMORPG Recommendations? · · Score: 1

My observation of several MMO's has been this:

When it launches, it's fun, the content is new, EVERYONE is around the same level (sure, some jump ahead quickly), so there are plenty of people to group up with. If you don't want to group up, there are at least a ton of people around who may help you out if you get in a bind. As it ages, everyone levels up and high level or end game content is the only thing that matters. Sure you get the occasional new player, but they generally don't get the same experience the early players got. There are very few people in the low level areas, the people that are there tend to be alts being power leveled. There isn't really anyone to group with. You might find a good guild that is willing to help you out, but this tends towards helping you coast through some of your quests so you can join their raids sooner. This can be a deterrent to new players, since everyone who is anyone is doing high level raids and they just want to be there. So there is pressure to make the early levels faster and easier. The already established players just want alts to fill job gaps in their raiding parties, but they don't want to spend 3 months doing it. This increases that pressure.

I think the only MMO that hasn't tended down this road (out of the ones I've played) has been EVE, but I think that's just because EVE hates noobs and veterans alike. Or maybe it's the real time skill progression, permanent loss of equipment on death, and laissez faire attitude when it comes to anything short of actual hacking and abuse.

Seconding this. I've been gaming since the early 80's, damn near my entire life. While there are plenty of games from days past that I still think are amazing, there are also those that were only good at the time and remain good only from a nostalgia perspective and I get sick of hearing about how everything used to be better.

Oh sure, there have been some genres that have received little attention in recent years, but the medium is constantly evolving and there are experiences to be had now that just couldn't have been done before, technically or economically. We have well written and immersive single player narratives. Cooperative and competitive multiplayer with large groups, distinct roles, leadership structures and voice communications. Network capable board games in our pockets. We're even at a point where you can have full body motion control for almost any game (Kinect hacks and Omni), including ones that weren't designed with that kind of control scheme in mind.

Origin has been expanding third party offerings, and there is plenty of older stuff on there that will play offline. I ended up installing the Mass Effect trilogy recently after accidentally dumping my steam directory while trying to troubleshoot why it wouldn't let me get online while actually connected to the internet (turns out it was blocked on the particular network I was on - no message indicated this until I reinstalled steam in attempt to figure out what was wrong). I needed to be connected to activate ME, but once that was done it worked offline just fine (also switched networks to one that didn't block steam).

Fortunately quite a few indie games run just fine without steam running so I now keep a few of those installed in case steam "loses" my credentials, but I had been hoping to play some Skyrim on that trip.

Now try that in the middle of the ocean! Sadly, as wary as I am of EA, Origin defaults to offline mode if there is no internet connection present and has NEVER prompted me with a box that says "We can't find your credentials, you need to connect to the internet before you can resume offline mode".
