I see a direct correlation with the "one act". By appearing (we don't know the details, so I'll be conservative) to kowtow to MS, they just lost all credibility. Personally, I think all the @stake personnel need to start polishing their resumes, since I don't think it's long for this world.
Since I think this is going to wind up as the "theory" thread, here's a small one of mine:
Every time thus far, (and I agree that we've been through several versions of the Matrix), he has chosen to rebuild, and left Trinity to die. The Oracle has figured out that her prophecies can change things, and has decided to do it. "What'll really bundt your cake is whether you would've broken if it I hadn't said anything". She knows what their normal pattern will be, because she's seen them do it several times so far.
But, by tossing out comments like "don't worry about it, you'll forget about this once you've left....here, have a cookie", she's ensuring he _won't_ forget, which changes the future somewhat. I really think she's been changing things more and more each time. The first time, maybe she just had him break the vase. The second time, she told Trinity that he was The One. The third time, realizing that Neo needs some more nudging, tells him to "have a cookie".
Heck, they may become the only place to buy a non-DRM'd machine. Looks like I'll own a completely China-made system pretty soon. (My current machine's chip was made in Malaysia)
Yeah - cry me a river too. Went from 5mbps to 1mbps, and if you're a new customer, you only get 768 on their "standard" plan. Oh, and usenet? 128kbps, 2 streams max. So I get 256kbps on the main thing I use broadband for.
But, what amazes me is that some of these caps are just plain dumb. If you have to cap P2P traffic, cap it when it leaves your network. Why not let everyone inside your own private network transfer at Mach 3? It's much more expensive to let them out to the Internet - you have to pay for that. Inside, provided you don't saturate your network, there's no added cost! Same with Usenet. I used to get 5mbps downloads, now I'm at 256kbps. If the news server was on their network, they could have a much higher cap. Instead, they farm it out to (forgot the name), so they have to pay for my traffic going over the Internet, and for the service. THAT is a much worse thing than their caps.

The motto of Discipline Records is:
"The phonographic copyright in these performances is operated by Discipline Records on behalf of the artists, with whom it resides. Discipline accepts no reason for artists to give away such copyright interests in their work by virtue of a "common practice" which is out of tune with the time, was always questionable and is now indefensible."
Um, or not. My machine, with an: Iwill motherboard with a Phoenix bios, Promise IDE controller, controlling an Athlon with DDR memory, with a Kyro II (Guillemot Prophet 4500) and Aureal II (Monster MX300), and a Netgear NIC, would probably blow your little mind.
There's more out there, as the other poster showed. At least 4 different manufacturers of everything, from chipsets to video cards. My machine would have 4^7 possibilities... or 16384 combinations. Conservatively. (assume not all chipsets support all processors, but also that there are many more than 4 sound cards...)
Hell, there are several dozen different variants of Soundblaster. Good luck putting a SB16 in your machine and having it work exactly the same as your Live. Or was it Live32. Or was it....
Um, that's the thing. Simply having it on your home network allows it to call home when you put in an Xbox-enabled game. Like, say, Mechassault. Even if you have no intentions of going on Xbox Live, you can still be screwed.
Going with your analogy, it's like driving your monster truck in your driveway and getting tickets because your driveway connects to the road, and you just _might_ go on the road. Regardless of the 10 miles of private track in your backyard.
Ya know, if I had a modded xbox and had to worry about this happening, it would probably keep me away from retail games, and rely exclusively on pirated games. Smart move, MS...
Honestly, do you really want your machine to patch itself? This leads to two things: 1) buggier games. After all, they can just patch it later. Just like on the PC. You want that? 2) bugs in patches.
So, does anyone know what port it "phones home" on, so I can block it?
I don't see why heavy equipment would be required. Several semis running over it, on a hot day, would do it. In El Paso I've seen what look like "waves" of asphalt, where trucks have driven. Granted philly is not as hot (thank goodness), but on a hot day, with several thousand cars driving over it? Yeah, it'd be embedded.
I read it in something similar. I found it one of the brilliant things about the first robocop movie - the movie was a satire of so many things, it was almost a natural to see the TMM reference.

Actually, the originator of the phrase is C.M. Kornbluth, in "Those Marching Morons". The premise is that in the far future, the average IQ is about room temperature, but everyone's happy with their "futuristic" speeders (which are cars that do 30 mph), their television is vapid, and there's a small elite running the world - they're the only ones with a real IQ.
I've decided to drop back, and wait for a few seasons before I start watching any new program.
Luckily, most tv channels have decided to accommodate you - unfortunately, it's by not having any new Science Fiction series. Remember a couple of years ago when Friday nights was the fanboys dream night? Dark Angel, Farscape, Invisible Man, Jeremiah, Firefly...
And this fall, what do we get? Jake 2.0, which looks like UPN redid "Sentinel" as "Sentinerd". Good thing that more modules keep coming out for NWN.
yes she ranks better than the semi-criminal/black-market/smuggler crew running around in their obsolete junker of a spacecraft, but that isn't exactly way up the social chain.
Yes, but in one episode, they said they needed the most respectable member (to go to the planet), it wasn't the Preacher, but the Companion who did so.
e-Paper. I remember reading an article in 1995 or so, about the MIT Media Lab e-Ink/e-Paper project, and how it would be out in "2 to 3 years". It's now 2003, and electronic paper is still 2 to 3 years away.
Doesn't Mozilla include it as a sidebar? I remember adding something that looked a lot like it. That being said, Firebird doesn't have it.:( Time to look for a mod for it.
Yeah - except that a lot of this already happens. There's a physics engine (Havoc?) used by a lot of people. AI has been reused. A lot of games already license an engine. Take a look at Gamasutra.com or Game Developer for more details.
And while I'm at it - this article really overstates things. Yes, it can take more people to develop for consoles. But games can still be built by small groups, and the games can be A titles. It's about not reinventing the wheel - look at some of the mods out there. Built by small teams that have the engine already. Remember, while eye candy helps, it's all about the gameplay.
Alvarado, Texas. My wife got clocked doing 66 in a 65. When she was there, a 60 year old man was fighting his "disturbing the peace" ticket - he had been driving down the freeway with his windows down and the radio on. If you're driving on I-35W, south of Fort Worth, beware. You'll see a lot of people _under_ the speed limit there.

Either way, looking forward to this.

And they also want to get the money associated with renting you a cable box forever.
I think you need to get out some more. My monitor won't even do 1600x1200. 60 FPS at 10x8 should be gorgeous.

Hey! No hogging! You already have one!

Check the short story out... well worth it.

Actually, I'm in the same boat, and don't mod me or parent as funny - I don't think the poster intended it to be.
What are some good RSS sites? I've done slashdot, and slashdot links to a bunch on their sidebar, but what others are worth getting?
Doesn't Mozilla include it as a sidebar? I remember adding something that looked a lot like it. That being said, Firebird doesn't have it. :( Time to look for a mod for it.
Anyone remember what happened to the OS/2 Version of SourceSafe when Microsoft bought that?
Never heard of it.
Oh.
