    "Many consumers value smallness hugely."

Here's a hint from the Apple website, in the section discussing the belt clip: "You can even clip the iPod mini to a lanyard for the ultimate fashion statement. We hear it's big in Japan."

Apple is one of the very few foreign companies to succeed in Japan, and it's all because of their focus on style. If you thought American consumers were fickle and valued style, you haven't seen anything yet. The Japanese are going to eat these things up!

Huh? I went to a public university. I lived 'at home' to reduce costs. I worked part-time. I graduated debt-free.

You want to know why were in a recession? Its simple, really. The people earning that money don't spend it.

What the hell are you talking about?!

It's very likely that this money is going into stocks or at 'worst' tax shelters like municipal bonds. That money is being reinvested in public companies or into the well-being of the local economy.

Nobody stuffs $700 million under a mattress. Just because 'golden toilet' sales are still down doesn't mean the money has vanished.

There are three classes of Bluetooth devices: 1 (100m range), 2 (20m range) and 3 (10m range). If I understand correctly, mobile phones are Class 1 devices.

In my own experience developing Bluetooth devices, we saw connections out beyond 100 meters, and this was inside an office building (i.e. passing through walls). IIRC we were using TDK dongles and the Zevo BT chipset.

So, imagine a circle with a radius of 100 meters. Now fill it with a crowd. Now find the spammer.

Nonetheless, this does not mean that the media as a whole is liberal. General Motors employs thousands of union workers who, for the most part, have liberal leanings and vote democrat. Would you therefore assume that the automotive interests of General Motors are represented by the Democratic Party? [Fact, GM consistanly supports conservitive candidates above liberal ones, all other factors being equal].

This is a wholly invalid analogy. The union-member line workers at GM are not the people on the board of directors.

By and large, the heads of our news organizations are very definitely liberal.

Regarding gyms and going to them, I think they're the perfect compliment to the nerd psyche. Once you get over that initial, intimidating phase of learning the layout of the gym, learning technique, and coming up with a regular and effective workout pattern, you can come in and essentially 'zone out' in your own little world of concentration.

Much like coding, it gives an excellent environment for repeatability and challenge which can lead to 'flow'. You know how you can sometimes sit down at the keyboard and begin crunching a fun problem and whole hours pass effortlessly by as you hack away in effective bliss? That's 'flow'. A similar thing happens when you develop a method for concentration at the gym.

    Three points of advice:
    1) Find a very knowledgeable friend or a really good personal trainer to help you learn HOW to lift. Technique is all-important to learning to enjoy yourself without injuries.
    2) ALWAYS go to the gym on days when you feel like it. Even if you were just there the previous day, if you find the thought of going again is appealing -- do it!
    3) FORCE yourself to go at least 'x' times per week (you decide on the value of 'x'). So if you're having a bad week and #2 isn't helping, make yourself get out of your chair and head down to the gym. You'll find that once you break that initial bad habit of sloth and begin your workout, you'll be re-enegized and have a good workout.

The _worst_ elements of gyms are joining and dealing with the membership jerkoffs. Talk to your employer and call your health insurer to see if they have any affiliations. ANYTHING to avoid dealing with the cheap sales tactics employed by the membership 'consultants'.

If you can make it past the first two weeks, you've developed a habit and beaten the biggest challenge. Within six months you'll be seeing _real_ results and this will greatly increase your enthusiasm. At this point, you've developed a lifestyle and will likely be able to stick with it indefinitely.

The messages are still a bit odd until you browse the class which triggered the error, but it shortens them down to a readable, meaningful length.

I'm a fairly recent STL convert and I find this tool utterly invaluable. I love STL because it provides a true standard for many of the structures and algorithms that are core to any project. I'll never have to deal with another crackpot programmer's homegrown, poorly commented dynamically-sizing array class again.
