  2. Re:Why Choose? Run linux on a mac on Ask Slashdot: Choosing a Laptop To Support Physics Research? · · Score: 1

Ubuntu does have issues supporting GPUs on laptops. I can't get the geforce GPU of my Dell XPS 13 to work because of the power off option it has, Ubuntu doesn't have the proper drivers to support the gpu by default. You can install additional software for that, but then you have to start your software with a special command to use the GPU, which will then keep running, using a lot of power.

I have an XPS 13, I'm very happy with it, but if you don't need the small size, an XPS 15 is better. Doesn't come with Ubuntu, but that shouldn't be a problem.

There are two ways to speak a non native language : translate every sentence in your head and run into the problem you indicate, or master it without constantly translating

Actually, there's only one way. In the first option, you don't really speak the language.

  10. Parental content control? Really? on Ask Slashdot: Parental Content Control For Free OSs? · · Score: 1

If "parental content control" means your kids do not learn about sex, I'm opposed to it. In countries where people are ridiculously puritan (i.e., the US) the number of teen pregnancies is 20 times higher than in countries where people are relaxed about sex and nudity (i.e., the Netherlands). I have always supervised my kids, online and offline, but never installed "parental content control".

Blocking child pornography will mean that the general audience will not be aware of its existence, hence they will not put pressure on politicians to end child abuse. Blocking child porn is counter productive, that's a fact. This I say as one of the founders of www.meldpunt.org and www.inhope.org.
