Relax, man. Not everyone is in it to pick up chicks all the time. If the woman was saying anything marginally interesting, maybe I would not have brought up the topic of operating systems. As it stands, that was one of my favorite experiences at a bar. And you know what, I would do it again in a heartbeat if the opportunity presented itself again. Just to see the utter disbelief in the persons face is well worth it.
So true. I would not be caught dead with one of these bimbo boxes. But you know what, many college students have no freaking clue about computer hardware. Hard to believe in this day and age huh? So these people are the ones targeted. They will buy the stupid mtv computer, and marginalize the the crowd that knows hardware (not that this isn't already the case) as a bunch of quacks/dorks.
When you say that college students are subject to peer pressure -- I don't think that the hardware saavy (sp?) individuals are exerting peer pressure on anyone other than their hardware saavy friends.
Speaking of peer pressure, I am reminded of the time three other friends and I were in a bar. My one friend was kicking it to some woman, and my other two friends and I were talking to her somewhat cute friend (another female). Well, I was inebriated, and so naturally the topic changed to operating systems. In an uncanny moment of smoothness, I asked her if she used Windows. You can guess that she said "yes." I immediately replied that people who use Windows are idiots. Well, that pissed her off, but the amazing thing was that my other two friends joined in ripping on her because of her choice in operating system. What a fiasco that turned out to be for my (normal) friend who was hitting on the other woman. Needless to say both women left.
And if you're wondering, It's GNU/Linux all the way baby.
I understand that the UI of a Mac is much more polished than that of X on top of unix, but, that is not the point really. What I want are tools to do a specific job efficiently, and i'm not talking about office apps or even web browsers. There are just so many tools available for Linux (once again, freshmeat) that it's incomprehensible. I assume that the unix command line tools will compile easily on OS X, but what if they don't? Where are the mac equivalents? And for the record, I do enjoy the mozilla experience more than IE, but you are correct in that staroffice is cumbersome. A cool UI is really just a bonus. As is opensource.
i did not realize that apache ran on mac. Very good to know. Now what about bind (dns) and something like qpopper (mail)? It does not have to be unix software....just *decent* software. Is there a list of mac applications out there...something like freshmeat?
I do not intend to troll, but here's the low-down:
The new iMac looks really F-ing cool. I want one. That aside, here's what I do with my x86/Linux boxes:
1. Firewall
2. mail/dns/ftp/http servers
3. desktop OS for entertainment purposes eg.
a.)music (xmms, cd ripping etc...)
b.)photo editing with gimp and associated tools.
c.)Usenet reading/posting with Pan
d.)web via Mozilla
e.)video via Mplayer
f.)games - I only play q2,q3,wolf
4. Full network transparency with X so that I can log into my other computers from a central location.
So, is there any convincing reason that I should get an iMac, or any other Mac (based on my needs) other than the fact that the hardware and OS X look cool? I guess that I am afraid to spend $1000-plus on cool looking hardware and then find that it does not have the flexibility of cheap x86/Linux machines.
I used to use this filemanager. I switched to emelfm for some reason or another, but I can't really remember why. Hmmm. I'm going to have to install this again and check it out.
Ok, i like these too. So, which source file do I need to edit to change this? Even if the mozilla development team does not want to change the wording, at least I can do so for my parents and such.
I was at a local computer store and overheard this tidbit a couple of days ago while two guys looked over an iBook with MacOS X loaded: "Check this out, they already have Windows XP installed."
Well. These two are obviously the result of some horrendous inbreeding, and must be taken out of the gene pool immediately.
It really sickens me to hear that people can be so clueless about operating systems.

You're right, I like my custom compile better than the pre-built binary.

I'm doing the compile with the same options on a 1.2GHZ T-bird, 1Gb RAM. It's taking me shite sight longer than 1/2 hour now. I'll be bitter if I don't finish faster than your duron. That said, I can't wait to try it out. This is my first time trying to compile the lizard, and I have high expectations.
Don't like the stories on Slashot? Don't read them. Simple as that. Why is it that people keep coming back even though they complain their asses off?
This is the problem with usage of microsoft products also: "Microsoft sucks!!!!!!!! Windows crashes sooooo often!!!!!!!" Well, stop fucking using the software. "But what choice do I have?????!!!! I have to play Baldur's Gate!!!!!!!"
For fucks sake! stop complaing and do the only thing you can: boycott. (Applies to slashdot in your case, and to microsoft otherwise.)
You, my friend, did not read the previous post carefully. He stated that complying with the DMCA does not constitute "editorial control". Therefore, they are not responsible for any defamatory comments posted beacuse they have never exercised editorial control.
Ahh.. Another Slashbot prevented from breading. It's a beautiful site.
Man, that's funny.

3.) A major improvement to Slashcode would be a system by which readers can moderate the posting of articles on the main page.
See scoop. Great moderation system.
Damnit, I wish I had some moderator points.

I've heard of Stallman and Sakamura, but who is this Torvalds guy?

Good. Down to -1 where this trash belongs.
Who the F moderated this as "Interesting?" This is clearly "Flamebait."
This is clearly meant to be humorous...I wish I had some mod points!
