    give him a non gui *nix box.

    make sure it has some text/curses based games and let em loose on that. Also, have some *nix manuals lying around.

    If they figure out how to get access to the outside world/install X, then all power to them (feel free to give them hints)

    the general idea is they learn gradually through exploration

    Please use a stable and secure distro such as Slackware or even Debian (it may be old, but it is stable).

    the problem with what your saying is that 90% of companies aren't big corporates that can afford a big IT budget.

    I know plenty of ppl who have got jobs via the Aussie job sites

    BUT most ppl have to apply for something like 200 jobs before getting one!

    really good game, like a combined RTS/FPS.
    has a lot of open source technologies in it.

    It runs on both Linux and Windows too

    the guy makes some good points... I know this happens with many employers.

    When you get a few hundred applications for the same job you tend to be ruthless about what gets let through.

    Now I just need to figure out how to right the best cover letter + CV so I can get a job... going on 3 months without work now :/

    recently broadband in AU has dropped in price and upped in gigs

    the average plan is au$80, roughly US$60

    this is for 512/128k adsl with ~15gb download (uploads are generally free)

    the biggest prob for ppl here is being able to get broadband as many areas still don't have it... tho hopefully that will change with some of the new wireless technology coming out

    I have a P100 overclocked to 120Mhz. Its running as the gateway for my 512k adsl connection. The ram is maxxed at 64mb (edo simms) and a 2.1Gb hdd. Network cards are ne2000 clones.

    works like a charm, if a little slow

    my Dad has an Amstrad pcw8512 that only died last year, he bought it in 1981!
