    Maybe url autocompletion on a public computer would be a bit like the autocompletion amazon has patented.

    Or IE/Mozilla/Konquror's auto complete on 's when your using google.

    So, the distribution is the problem.....Not the non-payment of royalties.

    In the UK I can go into a pub and provide entertainment by playing as many downloaded MP3's as I like, so long as I take note of what songs I've played and pay the royalties.

    multisession CDROM's support versioning.
    If you overwrite a file then the old file is still there, windows will only display the latest version of the file though.

    I've just been converting all some web sites over to using CSS.

    When you start using CSS (or anything vaguely complicated) you start to see just how much IE sucks. sure Mozilla and Opera arn't perfect IE just isn't.

    Ripping requires pluging the DVD output into an capture card in another PC.

    You'll loose a bit of quality, but you'll have a DRM free copy that will always be the same quality.

    if they were that fussed about performance they could compile everything using intel's compiler (except windows I suppose).

    anything that requires creativity, and not just observational descovery is an art.

    You can do computer science, and you will get a bullet proof system, but it takes a hell of a long time. People arn't that good at science, that why we created computers. code-breaking and missile targeting and the nuke.

    Ummm... what happened to the 'windows' support person.

    The extra peson or two could be traling the Linux source code looking for bugs helping make linux work better for your organisation. or just training everyone else so your workforce is better.

    Either way, 500 seets ditching windows give you at least enough money to employee another person.

    My company wants 500 desktop pc's.
    They should:

    Allow the operators some liberties, but be prevented from running all those crappy downloads and virus ridden emails.

    Support Printers, file shares, be Microsoft Office compatable, have an email client and www client.

    The low licensing costs should be fairly low and predictable, Ideally we'd like to swap in and out a couple of desktops.

    What should I use, for my workplace?

    Well I have a 'server' tucked away in the house, it has big fat noisy HDD's that I don't want in the living room, it runs my Email, ADSL,dns/dhcp and stores everything that I wouldn't want a thief to make off with (because it's hidden away).

    So,
    I run linux 24/7, it gives me:

    A reasonably secure filing system (thieft proofish)
    Email (at the cost of exchange server)
    DNS/DHCP
    A quiet living room (no noisy HDD's)
    and the ability to let anyone plug a pc in and join my home network, friends, house mates and people who bring round some music on there laptop for parties.

    I like that app that takes 30mins to run on a monday morning, it stops me from getting too drained and prevents me turning into a faster-faster board zombi.
